Here is list When last time previous champion defend her title at all biggest WTA tournaments (at least one season tier-I status or above):

Wimbledon 2008 (V.Williams)
Rome 2008 (Jankovic)
Miami 2008 (S.Williams)
YEC 2007 (Henin)
San Diego 2007 (Sharapova)
Roland Garros 2007 (Henin)
Dubai 2007 (Henin)
Philadelphia 2005 (Mauresmo)
Moscow 2004 (Myskina)
Doha 2004 (Myskina)
Tokyo 2004 (Davenport)
Berlin 2003 (Henin)
Australian Open 2002 (Capriati)
US Open 2001 (V.Williams)
Canada Open 2000 (Hingis)
Zurich 1998 (Davenport)
Charleston 1995 (Martinez)*
Indian Wells 1991 (Navratilova)**

* - Charleston Defending Champion Serena Williams will be 2009 Charleston 1st seed.
** - Defending Champion Ana Ivanovic playing today Indian Wells 2009 SF match.

BTW in ATP at all biggest tournaments somebody defends with success title sine 2005 - except in 4 cases:
1996 Cincinati (Agassi) , 1995 Miami (Agassi) , 1991 Madrid (Becker) and at Paris Masters NOBODY NEVER defend title

So will we been witnesses in just next 4 weeks that two WTA by far longest "DEFENDING CHAMPION CURSES" at Indian Wells (since 1991:help:) and Charleston (since 1995:tape:) will be finally broken (by Ana Ivanovic and Serena Williams)?

Sean.

Too bad that Venus won't have the chance to defend Zurich. Also, Berlin, Philadelphia, San Diego are not on the calednar for now and Doha is the International Series Championships.

I don't think anyone left at IW has ever got a winner's check for more than $US 40,000
Only dinkfests for Vera and Vika. Nothing for Nastia

on the atp you have to count when the last time it was a player outside the top 4 + tsonga won anything of any importance. They win everything!

Venus won 1998 and 1999 Miami
Venus won 2000 and 2001 Wimbledon

Srbuja only mentioned last players to have defended their titles at respective tournaments.
At Miami it's Serena 2008/2007.
At Wimbledon it's Venus 2008/2007.

Indian Wells 1991 (Navratilova)**

Indian Wells "Defending Champion Curse" is in biggest danger after 18 years! Defending 2008 Champion Ana Ivanovic just reach 2009 final.
How deep and strange is this "curse" tell us fact that since Martina Navratilova defend her IW-1990 title in 1991, Ana Ivanovic is just 2nd defending IW champion which reach final next season (Lindsay Davenport, defending champion from previous Year, lose 1998 IW final against Martina Hingis).
