Pray the Williams sisters don't retire until they're about 40 because painful as it is to say, they are the only two physically strong, mentally strong, champion-mentality players out there.

Everyone else seem to be deficient in one of these areas.

so? Aga is in a slump, she was making so many UEs and still Nastya couldn't really use it. The only reason why Agnieszka was winning games was Nastya's UEs ;) If she was playing well (like against JJ) it would be sth like 6-3 6-1 for her.
For me Agnieszka was playing at about 15-30% of her top game as for Nastya I know she was far from her best too.

well, i dont think so. 1st set was more disgusting and Aga had 2 SPs there. It was Nastya who played really terrible, her UEs were laughable, discreditable. I was wondering all the time how the highlihgts of this match will look like. Those 33 winners weren't suprising, they simply came from Aga's amateur return, that looked like unintended, poor dropshots. For me it looked like a match between bored #587 player losing to slumping #271

Nastya showed how good she can be on this match but also the limits of her current form. Mouratoglou is making his girls play extremely aggressively, it works at the beginning but then they need something else than this ballbashing. Not sure whether he can bring that to her. Nastya seems pretty good at the net, hope she keeps on working in this area. :)

Aga . She is just the shadow of herself. There were some brighter parts of her game in the match but overall she was extremely passive. I guess she is deeply tired from all the efforts she made last year. Get some rest, girl.

Dreadful performance for Aga, as other Radwanska fans have said she really didn't deserve to win.....

....which by the matter of elimination clearly means Pavlyuchenkova did deserve to win, even if only for being less bad than was Aga. In fairness, I don't want to be mean to Nastya, she played better than her opponent and that is the main goal of every match you go into. I have no doubt she can play a lot better than that, and it is pretty clear Nastya has a good future and it won't be that long before she is in the top ten, providing she plays better than she did today at least the majority of the time. Anyway, she did hit several very good shots which is more than I could say for Aga.

As for Aga, what can I say? I know she is a lot better than she showed today but I also appreciate and accept the way this forum goes the basic rule remains you are only as good as your last match. In those circumstances, I am not in a strong position to defend her were someone to rubbish her as a crap player. I can only hope Aga plays better in Miami. Very disappointing.

Out of the current group of young players that are supposed to take over, when the Williams sisters, Jankovic, Kuzentsova, Dementieva, Safina and so on retire she is the most talented. She hits the ball very clean and hard on both sides. She displayed good footwork, a nice touch and ball control, when she ran down some dropshots by Radwanska, and she kept her composure after completely f´n up at 5-4 and set point. Usually a young player would drop a set 5-7 immediately. I like her the most of all the young players, though I have to admit I might have underestimated Azarenka. If she can get her fitness/movement to a level, where it won´t be a huge liability, like a Davenport, she can easily become a top 5 player in the future.

I don't think we are rationalizing (I really can't; I did not see the match). If you will go to a thread in Agnieszka's forum where there are live fan comments posted during the match you will see that they were saying it before even the first set was over and before they had knowldge what the outcome will be. Whatever the truth all of those comments should not take anything away from Anastasia's success. One often plays as the oponent requires or lets you play. ;)

Frankly, I never ever encountered so many and so strong comments from her supporters. Because their reaction is so unanimous, and I know that a lot of them are good spirited optimists, I can only gather that her performance today was dismal indeed. And for Agnieszka that is indeed very uncharacteristic.

It wasn´t that bad. Just Radwanska fans trying to rationalize another disappointing loss.

It was bad. I would be much happier to see Aga lose simply because her opponent was too good. This wasn't the case today. It was a very low standard match. Certainly Nastya was better and she deserved to win, I have no problem acknowledging that. Nor do I have any problem acknowledging that Nastya has a very good future. But this was very low standard. And I rarely say that about a match. I tend to be able to see good in most matches I watch and I try to be positive. I don't involve myself in negative threads like "you know the WTA is bad when...".

Yes, for various reasons, illness included, this hasn't been a great year so far for Aga. But no excuses today, she was just poor and really it wouldn't have required a very good performance to beat Pavlyuchenkova because she wasn't much better. I do expect Ivanovic, who also hasn't been in great form to take care of Nastya pretty easily in the next round.

All that said, of course Nastya is young. I have no doubt she can play better than she showed today. Heck, I have seen her play better myself. And she is going to get better as she gets older. She has a good future. But today was poor, and I take no delight in saying that either.

Quarterfinals aren't usually that bad even today. Many 1st round matches are better than this was too. But again I don't want to disparage Nastya. She got a retirement in the 4th round and today she was fortunate to get an opponent who wasn't playing at all well so one could say she was a bit lucky to get to the semis this week but I am sure in the future she will get to many more semis and beyond without needing or getting any luck at all.

have u read the posts or u just felt the need to comment? what kind of excuse is that? both girls played some of their worst tennis today, the fact that Aga lost means that she was horrible it was probably her new career low. Not that she lost to Pavlyuchenkova, a marvelous player, but the way she did it. i find no excuse for that. i don't even feel too bad she is leaving top 10, for wta's sake it's fair that such slumping players have no place there. Well done Pavly :D

Really bad match! Neither player did themselves justice. I actually think Pavly was lucky to win that first set - she clearly got tight when serving for it (twice) and had to rely on breaking Aga's poor serve.
This is one of the worst mathes I've ever seen Aga play. For someone who is known as a great thinker on court, today's performance was just mindless. Some of the drop shots she played shouldn't even be attemtped when she's high on confidence, let alone in a slump! I got the feeling many of them were played out of desperation as I felt the longer the rally went on, the more likely Pavly would come out on top

Very accurate. Yes, Agnieszka was clueless today. For me it was soemthing hard to believe. Unless she wasn't feeling well (for the fourth time this season). In that case that would be understandable. Otherwise not. Women's tennis really surprises me: you can't be sure of anything.
