View Full Version : IW: V Azarenka def D Safina 6-7, 6-1, 6-3

Went from an error-fest in the first set to a display of strong hitting and positive point construction from Victoria.

Dinara's game is just not there. DFs all over the place. Over-hitting. Collapsing from 3-1 up in the 3rd. Seems like she's put all this pressure on herself to back up a great season in 2008. And it's not letting her dig herself out of holes as she used to.

stats

from 3-1 aza fought back and played an amazing return game at 3-3 with sizzling winners. then zeljko was summoned onto court and he told safina: from 3-1 to 3-4 ? what do you think you're doing. letting her run you all over the court; being all defensive. if you dont wanna hit the ball and be aggressive its finished.

safina went on to hit three ret. errors and another ue midrally... then safina won a pt, df'ed, won a pt, ue, ue, ue and thus gsm vika.

something that helped vika a lot today is that she decided to serve 3/4-pace first serves most of the time which didnt give dinara many looks at 2nd serves. she also had great depth in her shots.

great perfomance from vika even though she kinda choked in the first set and tb, but it wasnt that good from dinara. she'd have up and downs all the time, but most of the time she was kind of off...

Ana won this tournament and the French last year. She is not some other average top 20 player who has nothing else to her game. She hasn't been playing well since the French because of injuries, coaching changes, and other things. She is straightening it out right now and playing a lot better. To say that she isn't deserving from looking at this field is just stupid. I agree that they deserve it if they win it....

Ivanovic played very badly in her first few matches though.

What I am saying is I am really sick of these chokefests (such as the top half of the Australian Open draw :o) that the big tournaments are becoming. I just don't see the six remaining players besides maybe Vika stepping it up and playing really well to win, which I hoped someone could do

Great tennis from Azarenka. Brava Vika! She's kinda winning me over.

Most of all great point construction.* Many of her underperforming peers could learn from it. :o Some of Dinara's errors were simply because Vika was thinking one step ahead and had Dinara on a string.

Vika's game seems a lot more overall solid and built to last than some of the players (and slam winners) ranked higher than her at the moment. She's going to be mighty interesting to watch this year. ;)

*I'm surprised I'm saying that about her because I used to consider the epitome of a ballbasher. But it's true.

ew i cant beleive dinara's stats, whats wrong with her? shes like the new kuznetsova, playing uggggggly matches.

I believe she is tired. She has been playing top tennis for months now. And was playing a lot, unlike the Williams sisters who are very selective and they reap off the fruits of being selective, even though playing less incurs its own risks. But the WS know that they can afford those risks.

Dinara was very stable, dependable, consistent for many months. But everything has its limits. I think that Dinara is partly a spent force at the moment. I just wished the encounter with Azarenka would have mobilized her better. But if the AO Final did not, I am not so surprized that the IW Quarter-Final did not either.

LudwigDvorak
Mar 19th, 2009, 06:58 AM
But if the AO Final did not, I am not so surprized that the IW Quarter-Final did not either.

When you're as mentally and physically exhausted as Safina, I don't think it's possible to get revved up enough, regardless of the situation. This is her own fault, of course, but I don't blame her.

That said, she's still winning matches, and even though she's playing horribly, 13-4 for the year and a grand slam final is pretty good.

I disliked the match for the most part. I've always been fascinated by Azarenka's game--she's a very smart player with good court sense and I like the fact she is willing to come to net, but against top players, she usually fizzles out, for whatever the reason. This is a big win for her, but I can't help but feel Safina did too much charity work for it to happen. Azarenka was almost always ahead, always playing better in the first set, and Safina still eeked it out anyway, due to mental superiority. Then she collapsed and Azarenka's level improved. Same happened in the third set.

I'm not sold on this win streak from Azarenka, although it is impressive. She will probably make the final and win if it isn't Ivanovic she plays, but there are still many questions I have about her and whether or not she can keep this up...against better players.

Still, all analysing aside, I'm super glad she won. I've liked her for awhile, even when the board thought for sure she was this horrible choker who would never win a title or amount to anything. Now look at how she's treated here. As per usual...

no, Vika has 3760 with her QF win, Aga has 3468 with her R16 win. She can gain an additional 750 by winning the tournament. It's still close IMO

had to leave with Dinara 2-1 up in 3rd, even then it Vika looked likely winner
how she lost 1st set is a mystery.

Dinara's game is there in starts and goes breaks down every now and then.

Vika really coming of age in 2009  :) :D

Pathetic. I just hope Vera can save this tournament... Victoria Azarenka winning a super Tier I/Premier Mandatory? Just the thought of it makes me want to vomit.

I'd rather like to see Azarenka winning the tournament than crybaby Vera who always sucks terribly in finals

I saw the entire match, and Azeranka is the real deal. She still needs to work on getting some free points on her serves. I also think she could return better and move forward more often. Anyway, she's a ball basher who knows how to move the ball around and change direction really well. She had the match in 2 sets but kinda of let it get away from her. The first sete was hers at 7/5.
Azeranka is fiesty and really wants to win bad. She shed an angry tear after she threw the 1st set away. Dinara called her coach down after the first set and Vika played on without calling her coach. They said she's actually against coach calling. She held up and OUT HIT and OUT PLAYED safina in that second set. She was just consistant and too good. Blowing balls all over the place. Anyway, Azeranka held her nerve and wanted it more than Safina.
Safina has a one sided game. She was off. She called her coach down after the fist set. He was talking about her serve and ball toss. etc etc. Then Azeranaka without a coach destroyed her in that second. Then she called him back down after the second and he was getting in her behind. She then went to df more times. It didn't work.
Lindsay was impressed with Vika. Pat was also.

NOTE: Lindsay is a GREAT commentator. I think she is a natural and I look forward to her doing more. She's short, concise and to the point. She is the best out there. Lindsay, you're HIRED!!

The Lord hath answered my prayer!!! :hearts: :sobbing:

Most merciful Father, please be with us now in the hour of our need. Though the WTA walks through the valley of the shadow of death, we shall fear no evil. Thou shalt protect us from that most ungodly abomination becoming the highest ranked player. Dear beloved Lord, we beseech Thee to prevent the horror of Dinara becoming world number one. Blessed be Thy Name. Amen.

I was a fan of Azarenka before she was sick on the court. CSN played some great tennis, I still think she can win a slam.
I wish and hope that the racist stereotype posters would stop lumping all fans of black players together like were some herd or something.
