So Safina needs the final.....its almost for sure then IMO. Wow. Better than when JJ got it I guess, but still says something about the current state of the WTA...

Vika is playing well already! I can finally see a match on my TV, :rolls:

Stop double-faulting and beating herself then she can be #1

To not hit so many UE's  This match is awful right now. 10 UE and only 2 Winners from Safina before the end of the 3rd game...

I really think Azarenka will win this.

It's also crazy that Vika is dictating every single point out there,

If Safina beat Azarenka, she will overtake Serena for at least 3 weeks after Charleston even if Serena wins Miami and Charleston (b/c Charleston 2008 title worth 860 pts and this year will worth just 470).

For more informations read WTA TOP6 Rankings after both US March TwoWeekers (BONUS: Serena and Safina April) (http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=372474) thread.

Safina actually managed to win the first set. So if she wins one more set she'll be #1 after Charleston

construct points the way vika is right now. ;)

and be as nonstop committed to shotmaking improvement and mental soundness as vika has been the last few months.

dinara still has a lot of untapped potential. her game is weird.

The way Azarenka is playing now in set 3 is impressive.
She's definately a top 5 player down the road

She is outplaying Safina right now.
Even emotionaly, Azarenka has the edge at the moment.

Safina is destined to be #1 next week

What possible scenario would make her #1 next week?

I take it this was just a peptalk statement before the end of the match.
Not one based on fact or probability.

There are likely multiple scenarios that would get Safina to #1. Serena is defending winner's points, and Safina is only defending QF points.

I don't see any reason why Safina wouldn't get to the QF again (I'd EASILY say it's more likely for Safina to make QF or better than for Serena to win). Also Safina isn't playing badly. Azarenka is just the hot player on tour right now.

What point Senera is defending at IW, because that is what we are talking about.

The background was that Safina would become #1 if she wins IW.
Next week refer to this coming Monday, when the new rankings come out after IW result are tabulated.

She only had to make the final...

So looking at the rankings, Safina has 9021 points and Serena has 9432.

Safina made the Indian Wells third round last year, which is 80 points, and the quarterfinals this year, which is 250 points. The net gain is 170 points, which would put Dina up to 9191 and keep Serena at 9432.

Whatever happens in Miami, Serena will not gain points.

Safina has 140 points from last year, so I think if she made the semifinals (450 points, net gain 310 points), she would be up to 9501, passing Serena. If Serena were to lose early, Dinara probably could too.

To the stats people: Am I correct here?

Dinara is just not the No.1 material right now. She still choked in major situations even though she has been playing great. She was just lucky getting into the final. Her serve was awkful after the off-season and it is obvious that it's far less effective than her pervious one. The ball toss ....

Dinara needs a QF and F if Serena wins Miami.
She has the QF this week, so she'll need a final.
If Serena loses in the semis, Dinara just needs a R32 result.

So Dinara is ahead in safe points going in, and then Serena has Charleston points coming off after Miami

AnnaK_4ever
Mar 20th, 2009, 01:37 AM
Safina needs QF at Miami to overtake Serena after Charleston regardless of Serena's results at both events.
But even if Safina loses early at Miami Serena will have to win Miami and reach final at Charleston to save the top spot from Dinara.

Safina needs to win in miami and go deep in the next tournament.
