It was all up to Vera she made it difficult for herself
with 13DFS And Bad Service.
Caro making alot of errors too.
in the second set Caro has lot of chances to Break
but was saved by Vera 1st serve most of the time
Best game of the match was At 3-2 2nd set,Caro played very well
Opening the court moving Vera left and right sets up 3Bps
but wasted them all. Then Caro went up 30-0 in her next service game, but 4 Errors handed a break, then more errors= Vera GSM

It looked closer than the score indicates. They were out there for 1 1/2 hours too. I was just watching the scoreboard, but the key game seemed to be at 64 32 on Vera's serve. Although, Vera had a crap load of doubles :o

So disappointed in Caro! Just very bad display today, not playing as well as i expect her to. Some bouts of great play - good use of angles, variety and power but some VERY bad misses on the forehand side. Which at times looks disgraceful!

It was a bad day for her and she didn't give herself the best chance to win - with that said she had her chances to make it closer :tape:

Vera played well in the big points! She was made of steel on BPs! Quite impressed by that. She isn't playing well enough to win a 4.5mil tournament - but noone really is here

It certainly is, it does make me wonder why I prefer WTA than the ATP, when the quality is horrific, its watched by about 10 people, and the top players seem to be unable to win matches without hitting 30+ errors.

WTA has been going slowly worse for years. Admittely this tournament was always in trouble with the 2 star players refusing to play, Sharapova still not ready to play singles, and Henin's retirement is still a massive loss to the game. After those 4, who is the biggest star at IW, Ivanovic.. :tape:

Still it can only get better..

Just today I was ordering a few tapes with some of my favourite players, Maleeva, Novotna and Tauziat among those. When I was browsing through the lists of matches people sell I was astonished by how many great QUARTERfinals and even 4th rounds tournaments had back then. And now it is just SO bad...

I actually prefer watching ATP now. I've never preferred that before but now there is much more depth there.

Sometimes I wish good players from the past would just come back. Or even better: turn back the clock for good!

I think the big problem nowadays, is that the top players are simply unable to establish any sort of consisent play. Last year was filled with players winning a couple of tournaments is succession, looking like they could be the best, and then they play terribly with no form. Eg, Sharapova won Australia, then Doha, and then got injured and could barely serve. Ivanovic won the French, and then went on a inexplicable run and lost to the world #188! Safina had 3 good months, before a bad end of year (Her YEC was dreadful) And then Jankovic won 14 matches in a row, finally seemed to have mixed the aggression and defence correctly, and now is losing to anyone. While it could signal depth, its happening cos these women are playing so badly there giving opportunites to players, who well.. should not be beating any top players. It just didn't happen even 5 years ago. It's getting to the point where beating a Top 5 player, is really not that important, and its not right. It also doesn't help the upcoming players are not on the level that is good enough, and that they have as many weaknesses in their games as they do strengths. There's lack of rivalrys as well.

TBH we could be here all night discussing what is wrong. :(

And here goes the so called top ten contender : down in straight sets whereas Vera was double-faulting all the time & making things really hard for herself. I really hope that if ever Caroline breaks top ten, she will be improved. For now she is not ready yet despite her impressive consistency.
Vera is looking very strong this season but she has already proved that reaching SF was not a problem anymore for her. Now it's time to eventually get those major titles.

Pardon me, but Serena and Venus who, besides Radwańska, are the only non Russian or Serbian players in the Top 10, do not play at Indian Wells. What else would you expect? And, secondly, there is also an Austrian player in the QF, and she has been thus far among the most solid ones.

Oh yeah, we could find enough reasons to fill a whole book...
You shouldn't forget many players from "this" generation retired at their prime or at least close to it and also at a fairly young age. Think of Clijsters, Hingis, Henin etc. They all could have been a major threat on the tour for some years to come, but they chose a different path. Maybe it is really a time of transition, but right now I just don't see too many players who could really fill that gap. There's not only a big lack of rivarlys, but also a big lack of PERSONALITIES. Most of these new players seem to replacable to me, more like machines. And their playing style reflects it, too...

I will say it again: I would wish to turn back the clock...

Aside from the most erratic serving, Vera just hit Caro off the court for the most part. Takes the ball earlier, and has far greater accuracy than Wozniacki, thus led her to dominate most of the exchanges. The one area Vera has improved so much for me, is her court positioning. She takes the ball well inside the court now, wheras 4 or 5 years ago, she would be marooned about 5ft behind the baseline and tried to hit audacious winners. Nowadays, her game seems extremely fluid, if at times a bit too structured.

Caro had moments where she would hit a great winner or two, but it was so hard for her to find a way through Vera. That forehand just has so little dexterity and when she tried to add pace on the forehand, she would just spew errors. Caro for all her hard work, still doesn't have a huge weapon to navigate her way to big wins. Something she's gonna have to work on.

Btw, what was up with Vera's 'grunting'?! She sounded like a deranged chimp:lol:

Vera's been my pick since before the draw came out, and even in an ugly win she has yet to disappoint. She's been on cruise control this whole event and is in the semifinals; she's also been doing a very, very impressive job of looking like a top 5 player (and doing it quietly) the past six months. Correct me if I'm wrong: is she 4th in points earned in the past six months? As in, Olympics through today? I can only imagine Serena, Jankovic and Safina being ahead of her, although Venus and Dementieva might be close as well.

Very true. Personally, I think Vera's movement has deteriorated by a half step or so since she's been injured so damn much the past four years, but the trade off has been a very positive tactical improvement. She hits her shots off both sides with a great deal of control compared to many other top Russians (Kuznetsova, Sharapova, Dementieva) and gets awfully good angles off both sides, which practically screams at you to step into the court a little. Plus it's a great strategy for someone with good hands; she has that much more of a jump to get to the net if she needs to.

Her serve remains a mystery to me. It's not bad, really, but it's not good either. And some days it looks very good and some days it looks mediocre. I can't quite figure out what about it goes wrong or right, but it doesn't seem to be a pressure thing like a ball toss or impatience to get the point started (like Ivanovic and Dementieva, or like Kournikova and Capriati).

That's true, but Zvonareva is a brand-new top 5er. This isn't like Kuznetsova (my favorite, no deception here) having two years with nothing of note, titularly speaking. She (Zvonareva) has, in my mind, through the US Open series to win a Tier II or higher title before she starts to look a little like an also-ran.
