Oh well. Guess Dani has no other shot at a title this year. She's lost here at Indian Wells in a depleted field that saw many of the top seeds bounced out. She seems to have "the magic" at IW so guess we'll have to wait til '10 to see if she can produce another title from her ass here again.

It's unfair to Bammer to say that only Daniela was reason for such result.

Mom survive Dementieva/Hantuchova part of draw with 62 63 63 61 63 62 and she deserve some respect here. Indian Wells is place where she reach so far careers biggest Semifinal and she won here players like Ivanovic, Jankovic, Hantuchova, Golovin, Zheng...

So give her credit please :wavey:

No one is taking credit away from Bammer. But I'm sorry, no matter how you look at it, a 3 and 2 loss to Bammer is just simply embarrassing for someone of the talent and skill level of Daniela Hantuchova. The same was true when Dementieva lost badly to her at the 2007 USO. Bammer is steady, but has no big weapons.

Hantuchova's form has been horrendous all season. She might have a lot of talent and skill, but so does Dokic, and she lost to Craybas.

Bammer has had great results in Indian Wells and on hardcourts. Neither the result nor the scoreline is very surprising.

I'll be honest; I don't much care for Hantuchova, and haven't ever. I'm still disappointed to see her struggling, because she did have a rough go of it back when and has a top 20 game.

At the same time, does anyone else just LOVE Sybille Bammer? She's got that cool, athletic, lefty game without a whole lot of weapons going for her but just doesn't go away! We all thought it was a fluke when she hit the top 30 back in '07, and here we are 2 years later and she's pretty much planted herself in the 20-30 range. Good on her! To be at your best as a mom whilst spitting distance from 30 years old is just downright inspiring.

1st: Yeah, what IS it about Indian Wells that works so well for her? Is it the heat/humidity/wind levels? I know she has a super high ball toss (like, higher than Steffi), and I wonder if Southern California in March is just ideal for that ball toss. She's had such great results and scorelines in this kind of location.

2ns: Hell, I kind of want her in the final! Wouldn't that be a nice little surprise? I'm 100% on the youth train, and count Szavay and Radwanska among my ten or fifteen favorites on tour, but I'd just be thrilled to see Bammer make a total surprise run and reach the final or even win the whole she-bang! Of course, baby steps, and I must say I'd be glad to see her in the semifinals over Ivanovic or Pennetta.

3rd: Amen. It's so striking how much she improved from when she was 18, 19, 20 (I saw her a few times then and there was almost nothing that made her appear like a future top 100, let alone top 30, player) vs. when she was 25, 26, 27...28, and now very close to 29.

That's really not true anymore... Ana is 10-3, almost 11-3(4-1 3rd set Pennetta) on the year and has looked pretty good in her last tournament where she made it to the QF and pushed a scorching Serena to two tough sets.. I wouldn't say she's dominant again but as you can see Ana isn't going to get blown off the court by 100+ ranked opponents anymore.. I think Ana will make at least the SF here if not the final now looking at her draw.

There is no humidity out there, it's in the middle of the desert. Generally, it's warm, sometimes very hot. When I was out there at the tournament a couple years ago, it was nearly 110 degrees during the day. Some people really enjoy those conditions. But, it can also be very windy. That's not good for a ball toss. I think the court just suits her game. It's a pretty fast court to begin with, and couple that with dry weather, and the ball can fly.

I also enjoy Bammer. I hope she can make another run here. Judging by Ana's performance tonight, it's possible.

To be honest, I didn't see this one coming. But I should have. I was, blinded by optimism that in Dani's "home" tournament she would find the form to at least take her to the semis, if not further. In doing that I failed to notice that clearly Sybille Bammer is, and not for the 1st time, playing some great tennis. I agee with every word of Cp6uja's below.

It's unfair to Bammer to say that only Daniela was reason for such result.

And OsloErik really sums up here what is so amazing about Bammer....

I don't think this is the end for Bammer either. On current form I expect her to beat Ivanovic. Ana, is doing a good job fighting and getting through round by round without playing particularly well. Against Bammer either Ana raises her game hugely from what we have seem so far or she is out. I also think Bammer, should she come through Ana, and I think she will, will have a decent shot at reaching the final; Aga and Nastya are both playing well but neither looks at all unbeatable.

Yeah, like other Daniela fans, I'm disappointed by this result, but I'm not in any way "disgusted" by Dani's performance. Looks like she did her best and got beaten by the substantially better player on the day. Truthfully, I am rarely disgusted by my favs results. The only time I have been disgusted with Dani in recent months was that terrible collapse against Cornet in Paris, but that truely was disgusting.

As for Bammer, well I can't say I am a fan, and yet there is not a single player in the top 100 I have more respect for, including all by faves, and when Bammer does well, I do feel a sense of admiration and amazement for what has been a remarkable career.

A bad loss for Daniela, but Sybille is a player who can expose bad play by just the solidity of her play. It's not inspiring stuff, but she works so hard, and she's probably one of the fittest women on tour. This is a good testament to a player maximising her potential.

I don't want to create a furore, but Dani does look a bit spindly again. Obviously nothing to the degree of 2003, but you would hate for anything physical to be hurting her tennis:sad:

Do you live close to Indian Wells? I do (in relative terms), visited it on many many occasions this time of the year, and I can tell you that in mid-March it's anything but hot there, it certainly can be quite chilly, can be rainy, certainly quite windy. We are having a lot of rain this Winter in California, I think it is the wettest Winter since 1998, actually. Ah, and Indian Wells is anything but in the middle of the desert. In fact the nearest desert, Anza-Borrego (part of the Colorado Desert) is behind a mountain range. Mohave Desert is way north, behind another mountain range. It would be safer to say that it is on the edge of a desert, and on three sides surrounded by high mountain ranges.

I am big fan of both players, would have liked Dani to win but I don't mind her getting beat by Sybille. This shouldn't be overly suprising, for this is the tournament two years ago, where she reached the semis, beating Ana and Golovin along the way.

The most admirable thing about Bammer is that she's so contained with her tennis. She has a clear strategy, she doesn't leak errors, and you have to play great tennis to beat her. Her physical prowess which i've touched upon as well, is a remarkable asset.

I used to live in Southern California. Everyone in the area considers the Coachella valley to be part of the desert. It looks like a desert, it feels like a desert. If it walks like a duck... Yes, it can get chilly there this time of year. Back in I believe 2005 it was cool (60s) and rainy at times. Other years it can be downright hot. As I said, the last time I was out there in March, we had record highs of 110 degrees in La Quinta. Yes, that's extreme. But the average high this time of year is still around 80.

 Oh Daniela, there were some opportunities at this tournament but I guess there was a good possibility of this given the struggle in round two.

Bammer seems to be doing very well so far. Congrats to her.

Vychytila úžasnú formu a zatiaľ prechádza týmto turnajom úplne hladko, víťazí pomerne jednoznačne. Žiaľ, vrátane dnešného stretnutia so mnou. Určite boli veci, ktoré mohli byť z mojej strany lepšie, ale musím uznať, že Rakúšanka si dnes zaslúžila postup. Som sklamaná, že to takto dopadlo, ale s turnajom môžem byť spokojná.
Dani's post match quotes ..from sme.sk

Bammer's serve was extremely good today. Those high bouncing balls (serve..kick I guess) were very difficult to return.
On return I never could get into the rhythm and in my service games I was therefore under much pressure. She made minimum mistakes, ran down a lot of balls, she didn't allow me to play my game and basically didn't allow me (to get) into the match.
Then added: I played her in past but I sure didn't remember her as a player these qualities. She got an amazing form and is cruising in this tournament pretty smoothly, she wins quite easily. Unfortunately also against me todaz. There sure were things that could have been done better concerning my game, but she sure deserved to advance. I'm disappointed it's this way round but I can be happy/contented/satisfied with my tournament.

If Ana wins against Pennetta, she beat Bammer with ease!

Thank you, Beny, for the interview, and especially, for the Slovak original. Pleasure to read and a good practice too. Is 'Súperka' some kind of a new word in Slovak? What is the exact meaning and usage?

People.... Hantuchova has more than a year to beat a high ranked player. It will be a bombshell if she beat one this year!

Súperka means a female opponent, súper is a male opponent. It's not a new word.

Thank you Martin. Do you know cognate words in Slovak and in other languages? I am interested in its etymology.

Is Bammer still wearing that same white shirt with the green stripe? How many years has it been now? Seriously, she's been wearing it longer than Venus wore the Goddess dress and longer than Marion wore that blue Le Coq Sportif dress with the weird straps on one side.

Out of curiosity...what is the highest rank Davenport achieved after giving birth? Because Bammer hit #19 post-birth, and I'm curious how far back you have to go to find a higher ranked mother. It shouldn't be Goolagong, but somehow I think it might be.
