One match at a time, Dina. One match at a time...

 at the WS trolls who were whining about how insignificant the #1 ranking was when Jankovic held it and are now torn to pieces when it looks like Serena might lose it. If she is really the number one player, who cares what the computers say?

dinara is not tarnishing serenas legacy, she is tarnishing the history of tennis. as much as i wasnt a fan of hers, the tour has fallen apart since justines retirement, and this roulette of women taking the top ranking does not show the depth of the game but rather its glaring weakness. no woman can maintain the top spot, and the constant revolving door that is the number one ranking is going to players who should never even come close to it (ivanovic, jankovic, and now apparantly safina). it is a very sad time for women's tennis.

You go into a freaking thread with numerous other posters talking against a particular player and all you people can see is WILLIAM SISTERS fans. It never cease to amaze me the issue some of you people have. Jeez!

Dina can be #1 because she get it based on her play and the WTA ranking system. It may not be what some like but I wish people would look at the number of other posters who have issue with it and not just WS fans. Who if you might note have some liking Dina as well.

But seriously, how can a player who currently holds 2 slams be number 2 to someone who has never won any?

That's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes my dear. I might not be happy that Dina or whoever is #1 without a slam but if it's to be so be it. No need to make it an issue. She is not the first and she won't be the last. It happened on the ATP tour too so.

People actually thinking and or wishing for Jill to prevent this in kinda funny. Who knows maybe Dina might need this to eventually get her first slam.

Because she played less and won less (irregardless of significance) in the current ranking period.. simple as that!

I remember in high school, I always topped our class when we have our diagnostic exams and was the first in our final exams but I still lose the top honors because i have lots of absences that i failed to complete my assignments and take pop-quizzes... Everybody in our class knew I am the smartest, but everyone also knew, even myself that I was just not that serious about it!

Stop the hating, period, she is winning. You all would be more than happy if she have had a similar showing of Dubai. Get a life, if she gets it by reaching the finals its well deserved, not playing your best and win means a lot. Others are supposedly playing great tennis and they are losing. (eg Dement, Mauresmo, and so on).

Look at safina run at AO this year, she reached the finale without beating anyone worthy of.:tape:
If jankovic and safina reached n°1 is because of henin retirement, there is no real competition like when amélie had to fight to reach it.

No need to use that type of font to make your point.
An even worse case was Graf in 1997. When Hingis took over Graf had 3 grand slam wins counting for her ranking and the YEC win as well.
This system (abolish of average points) pretty much has been a mess from the start.

I don't know what the hysteria is all about? If Safina gets to number 1 then good for her. Her record in the last eight months or so speaks for itself. I'm not saying she will remain number 1, but she's worked hard for this and should have her moment.

Rankings are hardly definitive though, especially nowadays.

When Jankovic was no1 it was insignificant because she didn't win any of the biggest titles of last year. None. She is the kind of player who needs to prove herself -but failed-. Same goes for Safina. She is consistent but not a winner. Two major finals, another final at olympics. She is a finalist. Safina still needs to prove a lot. Being no1 is a big deal but the way you become no1 is more important than the ranking itself imo. Ranking doesn't matter for Serena but when she is actually no1 that's great for the tour because she is the best. Losers whose favorites suck -like patty :silly:- are jealous of her success.

When Amelie made her breakthrough there were NO Belgians yet, it was in the year where Novotna and Graf retired!! The Belgians came later.

I just can't believe that absolutely stunning and great players like Novotna or Sabatini never reached No. 1, but Jankovic or Safina get it offered on a silver plate...

What's Safina's biggest title? Berlin probably considering the competition she faced. That was her breakthrough win. Since then she is 4-5 in finals but lost the biggest three fo, ao and olympics. She is not a winner. Safina is another Jankovic.
