i'll trade you tennis channel for whatever you got, because tennis channel aint shit. the ultimate hottie of hottie matchup could occur in the next round with ivanovic facing off hantuchova, and i'll have to search forever to find it live on the internet because the channel that's supposed to have all these events is replaying destination tennis with some guy i've never heard of.

I wouldn't say that it's a waste of money. It's not very fan-friendly if you're only interested in the WTA, for sure. But occasionally they pull out some real gems, like the Pepsi Grand Slam matches they've been airing. To me, the value in TTC is the re-airing of the classic matches.

As for their coverage of the grand slams, I was excited that they would be supplementing ESPN's coverage until seeing the abominable coverage at the AO. ESPN shows about 5 players three times a day, and TTC then just replays those matches *again* in an edited format.
How many times per day can you watch one freaking match? TTC really needs to focus on matches and stories that are outside of ESPN's "mainstream" audience.

TTC's announcers are awful, too, by and large. Navratilova and Rubin are good, the rest are garbage.

I'll say this for the Tennis Channel. The quality of their commentary was better than what FSN had to offer last night. Does anyone know why TTC showed only men's matches?

TTC doesn't have rights to IW, if they could afford to obtain the rights, I'm sure they would show it.

I think before launching a channel specialized in a theme one must insure they will be able to compete the other channels to offers the best programms to their viewers .

If they cant afford to broadcast the biggest events of the year and instead they brodacast old and edited matches , then they should better give up their brand and stop to make their subscribers think that they are THE " specialized " channel on tennis .

At least ESPN dont lie when they put "classic" on their brand .

how much is TTC a month???

Aravanecaravan
Mar 17th, 2009, 06:25 PM
I don't know if you can buy it a la carte. WHen I had Brighthouse cable, I could get SD Tennis CHannel as part of a 4-channel sports package for $1.99 a month. Now, with a bundled service using programming from Dish Network, I get the HD version of TTC as part of the "America's Top 250" channel package I get for $27.99 a month. So, the answer is, it's a pretty minimal cost.

But how can this be a premier event & it be on FSN who don't even show it in some areas

I like the ATP & WTA - so I just wanna see tennis

Clearly it upsets a lot of people. I would encourage everyone who is upset by the fact that tennis is slowly disappearing from the air to write to the ATP/WTA, ESPN, TTC and whoever else you can think of and voice your displeasure. If ESPN is under the impression that hot dog eating, fly fishing, rodeo and poker are more popular than tennis, then it won't change.

Yes it is a waste and I am going to cancel mine in a couple of weeks. Here it is you have a tennis channel and tennis is being played and they are showing you repeated crap how many damn times can I watch the Davis Cup. What is the purpose of having the channel if you can't watch tennis that's going on today...I am so pissed that the only conclusion I have come to is that I will cancel it, it serves no purpose whatsoever.

I find it a bit strange that since 2004 they no longer broadcast the full tournament , neither eurosport france broadcast it ,not that i was not waiting for hours yesterday night .

Everyone in the states does not have FSC it depends on which cable carrier you have.

They dont even have a nightly tennis news show. That can't be expensive since they already have a studio. It's not a total waste but it is str8t up wack

ESPN is under that impression because that's what their accountants are telling them. Those "sports" don't cost a whole lot to produce, so any advertising they sell for them is a plus.

I actually watched a hotdog eating contest once on ESPN, it wasn't half bad. This little 90-pound Asian chick kicked the ass of some redneck hillbilly

It's hard to tell networks to keep showing tennis when 9 out of 10 slam finals are pieces of shit. That being said, I got rid of all but bare bones cable last year. The only time I missed it was this year's Australian Open final (I don't even get ESPN) and I had to go to a bar in the middle of the night. I was with the "real" drunks, but hey, anything for my gal Serena, right?

For the most part, they do. They just rerun stuff into the ground during weeks they don't have the contract to cover an event live.

They generally have strong ATP coverage the entire week , when they cover a tournament. With the WTA, as with ATP, they don't cover every tourney, but when they do, it's usually just the SF and F. The past few years, they have covered the following live: Sydney, Paris Indoor, Doha, Dubai, Eastbourne, Stanford, LA, San Diego, Stutgart, Moscow, Zurich and Linz, and during the off-season, they'll sometimes air Rome and this past year they aired the Bali tournament. The others have historically been covered by ESPN, until last year, when it decided to drop its coverage of IW and Miami. FSN picked that up, unfortunately, and given that they are the 2nd and 3rd biggest US tourneys, without a strong TV package, very few people in the US get to see those tournaments on TV now.

Most of the year, TTC does OK with the tourneys they have contracted to cover. I just wish they'd 1) show more matches from those tourneys, and 2) pick up full coverage of IW and Miami. That'd be OK.

On balance, the TC is extremely under-whelming except when the slams roll around.

TTC is the only place you will get tennis, do not be greedy! Livestream, sure.

However, the French and the US Open -- TTC will have exclusive airing rights. You will be glad you have the channel then. In fact, if the USO goes as well as planned, that accounts for some advertising $ inflows. Perhaps more tournaments and more coverage.

Exactly. The $ is where the slams are. TTC should start improving beginning next year.

Hopefully, since FSN will not have an option for next year, TTC can get Miami and IW.

I completly agree 100 percent. But I wont cancel mine because it is so cheap and they do provide good coverage during the slams.

But ill say this. I would sell my soul if they would fire that annoying ass Murphy whatever his last name is. he is literally the most annoying person on this planet.

completely agree. i only pay about 5 bucks extra a month for a "sports bundle", and it really comes in handy for euro clay tourneys, and in the fall after the us open, when tennis non-existent on any other us tv. plus i would rather watch mens tennis, than no tennis.

They have a deal with the ATP a commentator said during one of the IW matches.

For me, I don't mind the truly "classic" matches, but not constant reruns of a recent final. I want to see Graf, Agassi, Connors, King, early WS, Seles, Court, Evert, Ashe, Vitas G., heck even earlier -- Connolly, Pancho Gonzales -- if they had it, during the "classic" matches.

Also, some more original biography/interview programming mixed in. I like the new Evert show, and look forward to seeing the Andre Agassi one next month. TTC has bio programming, but they need variety in the schedule. I'm SICK of seeing Lleyton Hewett for the 20th time in the last few weeks. Enough.

They have enough to mix it up as I have heard from their commentators as one said last year that they bought the NBC library (CBS too???? Not sure on this...), so they have enough for a variety of great classic matches too. But obviously, they don't have great programmers???

My GAWD, Helen, my hubby and I watched one of these on ESPN too! It was a German Sausage eating contest in Wisconsin featuring some skinny Japanese guy, who apparently is a renowned world champion eating stud, against a bunch of people including a redneck dude from the USA west. It was entertaining! Although, I'd rather a classic tennis match if I could get it.

I kind of like Tennis Channel. Oh, the commentators aren't that good (though I really like Leif Shiras), but there is a lot of variety. I enjoy watching the old matches, and I like the tennis tips. Some of the player features are pretty good, too. I agree, though, that it would be nice to get more current matches.

I like the variety too, seeing old matches, tennis clinics, bag checks, and profiles of players. Only costs a few dollars a month, cheap entertainment, in my book.

They can't outbid CBS, Fox, or ESPN for the big tournies, simple economics.
