I was looking up on the WTA website to see how her matches went in Indian Wells, in comparison to this year and noticed that the prize money was more for 2002 ($332000) than 2007 ($306,890) why did it decrease I thought prize money kept going up?

Hmm, I think they adjusted the coefficient of the prize money. Like perhaps the winner earned doubled the money of the RUP and so on... And now it's about 0.60 more than the RUP?

I've checked it, and it really did decrease in prize money, and even the factor between rounds is greather than 2002. Very weird

Easy explination, when Kournikova was around in 2002 (kinda) the sponsors had higher prize money, then when she left many sponsors decreased the prize money or left the tour

Told you the explination was easy :p

Indian Wells has been one of those tournaments whom the sponsors play hot potato with. Hence it doesn't follow the general trend of increasing prize purses.
