Congrats Ana. Comfortable last few games to end a shaky match. Flavia played awful from what I saw though, so hopefully she can make the QF. Some nice forehands today though, those have become more rare than they used to be.

Both players were setting up the points well, But missing the kill shots again and again.

Though there was some lovely variety, some good defence from Dulko. Ana was taking some power off of her shots and using spin to get them in.
Good serving from Ana at the end. And there were signs of the Fh :)

W/UE:
Ana - 17/31 :tape:

Not the best match overall. But not aw awful as the stats make is seem. Some nice rallies.

Congrats, the groundstrokes seem much more solid now than at the beginning of the year.
Serve, on the other hand, is still unbelievably shaky. I'm afraid it might desert her completely in a future match.

Good luck against Pennetta though :)

Ugly match though, particularly that 1st set. 6DF's in that set. Things got better in the 2nd though. Flavia didn't play well today though so its going to be an interesting 4th round match

Win is a win. I liked Ana's serving in the 2nd set. Shot selection was questionable but she was trying out different things. Gisela didn't look in the mood today so Ana could've afford it.Where are you Ana's fans?:wavey: We're giving a w/o in Who will start first the result thread in GM - Race. :tape:

Not great tennis. This match was gifted rather than won, UEs were everywhere and it wasn't pretty :(

Ana seems to be close to picking it up, but she's not quite there. The final shot isn't there, she seems a little slow, the ball toss can still be a little iffy, the fist pumps have gone down a bit but still need to be downsized, the forehand was pretty good, so was the serve in the 2nd set, especially the 1st serve, but she gave away all the advantage in a rally whenever she hit a bachkand, she was net rushing to no avail again and when that doesn't work against Gisele Dulko I don't know what Ana expects when she plays anyone in the top 10...

Mar 17th, 2009, 12:05 AM
Good win for Ana. :clap2: It was far from her best performance with the lingering serving troubles and UEs, but Ana did a good job of perserving and turning it up when she had to. I liked what i saw from her forehand. Hopefully Ana can improve on her serve and cut down on her UEs before her match against Flavia.

Yeah, it slightly improved toward the end, but overall was just terrible. Someone with a better return won't have many problems to break her if she continues like that. When Ivanovic's serve is down she ain't beating anyone decent. I gotta admit that her groundgame was quite good but this was Dulko whose shots either barely crossed the service line or landed behind the baseline when she tried to hit it hard.

Not the best match overall. But not aw awful as the stats make is seem. Some nice rallies.About half of Dulko counted UNFORCED ERRORS in this match is actually FORCED ERRORS today because Ana many times hit ball too heavy and deep for Dulko to ball back, but enough close to her (and Dulko was fast) that she has chance just to touch ball with racquet (but without real control). That's why this match seems very ugly if we look only stats, but in reality we see many good shots and points (solid match).

Also, i think people give too much importance to Ana's ball toss (DF's also today) when talking about Ivanovic serve. Fact is that Ana is WTA 3rd best server at the moment, and which is even more important for Ana - her Forehand is finally back (since Dubai actually). If she not choke badly, her draw is wide open to final, and whichever (Bela)Russian she meet there (Safina, Zvonareva, Azarenka) i will give Ana better chances... Ana always plays her best tennis in finals, unlike all Russians (except Sharapova).

Okay. That explains Dulko (perhaps). What about Ana's errors?Ana try today to make points shorter even for her standards. Finishing points so fast, without usual "preparation" produce more errors than usually when she played solid, and that's why she has more points from Dulko FORCED errors than clean winners. Match stats 17-31 vs 10-25 shows awful and equal match, not routine win where one player overclassed other - story which we really seen today.

Ok, Ana is my favorite and all, but how is she the 3rd best server on tour? :oRight now Sharapova and Petrova is out, Kuznetsova and Vaidisova sucks in all areas, so only player able to compete with Ana to ATM #3rd WTA server (behind sisters) is Dinara Safina, but despite all that ugly ball toss problems which Ana has after changing grip and serve motion (after last summer thumb injury) and more DF's than before, she is clearly #3 WTA server again. For example in 2nd set against Yakimova here Ana won all points on her 1st serve (11/11) and today in 2nd set Dulko won just 5 points overall on Ana's serve. But couple ball tosses and DF's is obviously enough here to overshadow all this facts and people even try to compare her serve with Dementieva from past which is complete nonsense.

You probably mean that when it accidently goes in it is the 3rd best serve on the tour.Since middle of 2007 Ana's 1st serve IN average percentage rise from about 50% (pathetic) to about 60%, which is not impressive of course, but not big problem, especially if we know that her average 2nd serve is not worse than average 1st serve of many TOP20 players.

You don't understand that good ball toss is required for consistent reliable serve. You may throw in any useless stats as you usually do, but that won't change the fact that Ivanovic can't rely on her serve, which is why it is in no way 3rd best on the tour.

I will repeat once again - at the moment Ana Ivanovic is WTA 3rd best server, despite all that ugly 2009 ball tosses.

How can You be so blind to call "useless stats" for example fact that Ivanovic in 2nd set against Yakimova won all 11 points on her 1st serve, just b/c she has some ball toss problems? Or for example yesterday against Dulko more than 25% Ana's 2nd serves (6 out of 23) was double faults which is really awful. But on other hand she won 14 out of 17 points when her 2nd serve is IN, which is fantastic stats and tells us something about quality and power of her 2nd serve.

BTW serve technique of Gisela Dulko seems very well, but that is not even close enough to compensate 15+ cm, 10+ kg and "natural power" difference between two opponents yesterday. But OK... if "ball toss" factor is most important when we rate players serves I agree with You - Dulko serve >>> Ana serve :p.

She's lucky her draw avoids her to meet powerful players.Dulko had opportunities but couldnt maintain her advantages in both sets.

Only problem Ana makes on her serve is she does not catch the bad toss she hits it. Her new coach has risen the aggression level now of Ana, so at least initially she will have more UE's. But to rise to her new level I also believe she needs to be more aggressive and also come in more on her thunderous shots.
