View Full Version : How come Venus never plays a warm-up tournament before Australian Open?

No wonder she's never won one. She comes into it without proper match-fitness. She should come to the ASB Classic in New Zealand held in January to get some matches under her belt (I'd love to see her there). :D

She plays Honkong exo. Its kind of like a place for her to try out new things.

She plays Hopman cup. Its kind of like a place for her to try out new things.Hong Kong Exo. Where she generally does well, but it does not similate match conditions. There is really no pressure, she swings freely.

Then she gets to Melbourne and she is not match tough and generally hasn't played in match conditions in months. This past year she actually played in the fall through the end of the year championship, so :o

Time for her to reconsider her approach. Hell, she's got nothing to lose after a 2nd round exit.:help:

I agree Venus should forget about that stupid exhibition in Hong Kong

She should go earlier to Australia and play Brisbane (Sydney is for Serena)
She needs to change something in her AO routine

Serena usually plays Hopman Cup.

This year Venus played China Exo.

These are tough economic times. I say, play Hong Kong, win, and collect the cash. Venus is a pro and has been playing in Australia for years. If she is match fit from Hong Kong, she should be able to get adjusted to the surface when she arrives. She has her own routine for prepping for slams

I looked at her playing activity on WTA tour website, and the Australian Open is listed as her first tournament the years I looked at apart from one year where she didn't play it. Anyway like others have said, an Exo tournament isn't really the same.

WS win/lose by actually being WS themselves. I never feel some "if" may do them good(or do them bad)in any way.

These are tough economic times.

Er... and Venus Williams is not one of the people who is facing those times, being a millionaire many time over and all...;)

Whatever the case, she needs to start preparing differently for this slam, because whacking a few balls in HK pressure-free is NOT having the desired results.

...And how bored must people be about IW to be even having this discussion now?

It was the knee that was the problem in that tournament. I actually think that is the reason she stopped playing warm-ups in Australia, she kept getting knee injuries and ankle sprains on the Rebound Ace. I wish she would play Canberra or Brisbane too, the surface is different now and China is too cold and the surface is completely different than the AO. It's like practicing for a Violin recital by playing the Tuba.

Another thing that annoys me about her playing that damned Hong Kong exo every year is that she gets hurt there too. Last year she got the hamstring injury you saw at the AO. She suffered it in the semi against Dementieva, most likely because it was 50 degrees out there and you can strain something so easily when it is that cold and you don't prepare pre-match just right. She also strained her hip after a fall there in 06. She has won that thing 3 times and does it matter, it doesn't go in the history books it doesn't get her ranking points or prize-money she can count towards her career totals. OK you get maybe three four hundred grand in appearance fees but you could win twice that in Australia and pick up a major. I was so hoping she would do something different this year but nope didn't happen.:mad::help::fiery:

Maybe after her loss this year Venus might've learned her lesson and will do something different next year. If Venus was well-prepared she would've been able to crush Suarez Navarro, especially since her record since AO is spotless (apart from that Billie Jean Cup thing which doesn't go down in the records anyway).

I'm sorry this is just an observation but you gave the thread starter an F- because it was bad timing, and not researched what so ever. Then you say she plays an event and gets to the final the same year. Which is wrong  And then to take the attention away from your mistake you try to make a detailed description about that match that you "forgot" and then were proved wrong again...:kiss: Interesting psychology here in this thread :rocker:

Personally, I think she should play small tournament in Australia before AO like Brisbane where she'll meet lower ranked players.
Even if she loses early, it'll motivate her more to do well at AO.

Venus can't play any warm-up tourneys (other than Sydney) because she is (still) a Top 10 Player who can only play 1 international tourney in one half of the year and that 1 spot is already reserved for Acapulco because of appearance fee :p

Really? That's a bit stupid. Dementieva had two warm-up tournaments (both of which she won). Of course only one of those was an International. She should just enter Sydney. Who cares if Serena enters that one?
