View Full Version : What is your general feeling towards Alize Cornet?

I only ask this because im worried about her. Ive seen alot of her matches this year and Im not impressed. She reminds me of the kind of player that will constantly be ranked in the top 20 for years and years but will never really amount to anything big or be a heavy favorite in slams. Am I wrong? Does she have what it takes to be a future number 1 player? She reminds me a little of Dementieva, not so much how they play but how she squabbles easy matches. I dunno, its late and I may just be tired but thats just how I feel.

She's a good player, but it's too early to say But why are you worried? I mean even being a top 20 is something the other thousands would like to achieve.

I saw her play in person at the US Open qualies and was surprised to see her rise as high as she has. She definitely works hard out there (clearly a fighter) but no big weapons really to make her a top contender.

Im worried because my intuition is always spot on. And my intuition is telling me that Cornet will be the Dementieva/Scnyder of the teens. And I wanna like her I really do, shes one of my new favs but..... I dunno

And I do agree about that nose. She kinda looks like a decendant of The Easter Rabbit.

Her game reminds me of Hingis. She doesn't have the "Big Babe" game to become a champion. Maybe 10 years ago. She seems like a good sport.

In my head the jury is still out on alize. I see the talent, i see the fight, but i also see insecurities. In her game and in her head. She's still young. She could be the type of player that either turns into a dementieva/schnyder because she doesn't get her head straight in big matches early on in her career OR does get her head straight and it stays that way turning in a very hard to beat person.

That's the first way of reasoning.

The second way is:

Cornet could be the first real modern surface specialist. Until now, on clay she's been a totally different player. You can see that by looking at her results on it, those are very good for an 18-year old. She could be the first out of a young crop of players and this new era in tennis that thrives on 1 surface.

Anyway, let's see what she does on the clay this year. If she can 'almost' beat top5 players on hardcourts she's gonna have her chances on the clay for sure. It should be entertaining.

Her nose looks like that guy in the cantina scene of Star Wars that attacks Luke.

LudwigDvorak
Mar 15th, 2009, 06:41 AM
I think she'll be a threat on clay for years to come. She should, anyway, bar any surprises. She's very impressive on that surface--her fairly weak, nimble game is amplified on clay and she looks much stronger in every department. The backhand is a great shot, but still needs work on the serve. Some of the matches she's lost this year question what I was sure she was developing last year, the champion mentality. I love her fight and determination, and above all else, that's the main thing she has going for her.

I like her. Sometimes I hate how passive she is and that she puts nothing on so many shots, but she's a joy to watch sometimes.

I don't like her but I don't know why. I hope she (along with other young guns) can become a great player for the sole reason that it would make for a higher quality WTA tour.

And I wanna like her I really do, shes one of my new favs but..... I dunnoWhile I agree with your analysis, let me offer you two names to give you hope. Iva Majoli, and Anastasia Myskina. If she maximizes her talent, and a draw opens up, she could win a slam. But it's not going to be on overpowering athletic ability, or sheer firepower.

As for OP's call I think it's too early to predict anything. We just can state that she is a talented girl with relatively all-around game(:p), who perfoms on 'home' clay surface better that anywhere, but at the same time is a good contender on hard courts. At the moment she is rising up at rankings and in the game year-to-year(not many years she is a pro, right?), so why should we predict when will she stop? Maybe that #11 was career high or maybe we are talking now about the future world's no.1:p You might have a pleasure watching a star is rising, no need to be worry here.:D

To those, who tells she is only a claycourter: (I know it's tricky comparition, anyway) Rafito Nadal some years ago was known as only clay-court player and sucked 9 month per year without clay, and now he is defeating the best player ever played the game in a hardcourt major final. Why claycourter Alize can't go that way?:D (Almost a joke, but I believe in best)

To those, who talks about her nose: look at yourself before talking about other people looks. Have looked? Disappointed? I knew it. I am sorry.:D

I love her! :hearts:

Her game is so refreshing to watch. She is showing emotions on court and she is playing with a great determination in most of her matches.
She is really a fast improver and I can't wait to see what she does at Roland Garros this year. :)

She has proven more than once that she can do well at other surfaces than clay look at US Open, at Australian Open or Paris. She needs to improve her serve a bit and work on her physical conditions (sometimes she is out of breath after long rallies).

I really think Cornet has the talent to become a threat (outside grass) to be reckoned with in the future.
She leaves the impression of a very hard working person, who is improving with every match I watch of her!
She definetely needs work on her serve and her volleys, but lately she has shown that she won't be a player relying completely on her opponent's errors!
I think Cornet should win at least twice in Paris and with good 2 weeks I can see her taking AO & USO, too , at some stagei n her career, if she stays injury-free or suffers from other problems!
The fact that I like most about her is, that she undeniable plays the most individual style of all upcoming newcomers in my eyes ;)

I' m not sure whether she is a nice person or a spoiled brat

Personal feeling: SHE HAD A STUPID LOSS AGAINST KRISTINA BARROIS. That's all. Her game doesn't impress me in any way, her serve is worst than Dementieva's and she always blows away opotunities, like against Safina at the AO and against Jelena I'm-thinking-about-quitting-tennis-again-cause-I'm-a-cry-baby Jankovic in Paris.

Gorgeous backhand, improving serve, handy at net.

Lacks the aggressive intent she needs for the top 10 atm though. That forehand could be so much more forceful though. Plays with such excessive spin, due to that highly exagerative grip.

One to watch this year and next. She played great against Jankovic in Paris.

I seems nice when I saw her talk but I can't base myself on that. I saw her play and it seems like her game only works on clay. She could be Top10/Top5 in the future with her future potential clay results.

Wathever, she's just 19, she has years to improve.

could u elaborate more on Petrova type? And I mean the one with career high #3 in both singles and doubles, 24 titles, and 2 grand slam SFs in singles.

to answer the question, i do feel sympathy for her, and i like her nose. having said that, i must admit that i've never been enchanted by her tennis, she is still very very far from top 10, regardless her ranking.

Extremely enjoyable player to watch. She created an incredible atmosphere in Paris thanks to her incredible fighting spirit and the showing of her emotions.
I believe in this FH at 100%. It has the potential to be a fantastic shot. I also hope that she adds a real slice to her gear and improve her net skills. I totally see her into top 5 in the coming years. She is a refreshing player with a truely personal game.

As someone said, Alizé is improving all the time. She is extremely far from her peak ; yet she was number 11 not so long ago.

Very underrated player. People think she is just a pusher - merely because she isn't a ball basher  She is great to watch when she is playing well. Great point construction, variety & net play. As another poster mentioned she plays big points very well. :worship:

She made the top 20 when still a teenager, so people saying she is crap are clearly wrong. She was been so close to making the break through win for a long time now - Rome final, pushed JJ & Safina to 3 sets a few times. She knows how to beat power players too!

She lost in Dubai because she is injured. Apart from that she's been really consistent this year - more than most players at the moment. People who judge her on her appearance. How very shallow of you, maybe you should look in the mirror?

It's great to have people with different games in the sport  Makes it interesting!

Cornet is only a factor on red clay. On grass, she's ineffective and on hard she just doesn't do enough with the ball to worry anyone in the Top 20/30 unless she is playing at a very high level.

She can't flatten out her forehand when she needs to. Her service, especially the 2nd, is extremely vulnerable. Her backhand is mediocre and she doesn't have enough variety to consistently keep players off balance.

All in all though she hasn't been right since she blew MPs against Safina at the Australian. Her year could have been really different with a win like that.
