OMG! Did you read her quotes? LMAO, where she says "I wasn't even excited about this match". If she were one of us I think she would have called in a mental health day today. lol. And it doesn't exactly sounds like she'll be in the mood to play Miami in two weeks either. lol.

Well the first official tank of "The Road Map"

I fully expect Dementieva to have a press conference at Miami where she will say:

"I would like to officially announce that I am joining Venus and Serena Williams in their boycott of Indian Wells. What happened there 8 years ago was a disgrace to tennis and I was partially responsible. I want to stand with Venus and Serena in their fight against the evil bigotry and mistreatment they experienced there, and I will not return until they do. We girls have go to stick together. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE. FIGHT THE POWER, and THIS WAS A FAMILY DECISION, between mama Vera and me."

Elena definitely wanted to play IW ... would lose chance for $2M year end bonus if missed any of 4 premier tournies, plus 1000 ranking points if won it. Most players are tight lipped after a big upset, human nature.

here is the quote

"I just think my mind wasn’t there. I was not really excited about playing this match and I just didn’t play at all. I think I should not have come here because I did not have enough time to recover after playing so many matches at the beginning of the year. I needed a much longer break to get ready to play at my best.”

she did not saying that she did not WANT to play IW, but she SHOULD not have to come because she might need more rest, this is small but significant difference. all the discussion is useless...

3 weeks off from the middle of February and still not rested enough would suggests she needs to work a bit harder on her fitness.

Elena had 3 weeks between IW and her last match at Dubai:rolleyes:
Moreover she played every week from Auckland to Dubai so that's HER problem if she already needs a break!

That being said, I completely agree with the poster who said that playing a tournament you didn't want to play is not the greatest thing for a players motivation:rolleyes:

She didnt play IW last year, so why are people suddenly questioning that she didnt want to be there? But you have to ask why she pushed herself so hard? Does she not look at the full WTA calendar and think that there are 2 back 2 back Premier Mandatory events and that it would be wise to leave some energy in the tank for them

It's not like the tour schedule this year comes as a big surprise. She's known for a very long time that IW is mandatory and should have adapted her schedule accordingly. She's enough of a veteran to know how her body reacts to how much tennis she's playing and how much time she needs to recover.

I'm kind of sick of hearing about this "I wasn't excited about this match" and "tournament I didn't want to play" ridiculousness. I think it comes off as rather thankless and spoiled. She gets travel around the world to beautiful places. She has fans who care so much that they will obsess over her every haircut and defend her to the ends of the earth. She gets to play a wonderful game for a living, and if she can't get excited about all that, then I think the least she can do is fake it.

Yeah I agree. Players want the tour to be specifically modified to suit their preferences eg Radwanska. You would think the tour was paying them a couple of thousand pounds a year for what they do, when instead they make fortunes.
However, the scheduling continues to confuse so many people, and IW/Miami is just one of the aspects that makes me wonder what these people are thinking when they write the calendar. It needs to be better spaced than it is atm.

They should either have IW or Miami as Mandatory, not both. Playing two tournaments in a row that last over a week with a very little break can really affect players.

Maybe Richards wanted her to lose.

Backdrop: This is where Dementiava first implied that Richard Williams decides who wins or loses in Venus-Serena match up, after losing to one of them.

Learning to be a champion on and off the court is vital, Elena.

yeah, people don't like insincere & phony responses from players, but at the same time they don't like when someone honestly tells how they feel. Yes, as someone said above, Lena makes tons of money and travels around the world to see beautiful places, but only God knows what players feel after having this life style after 10-15 years in a row.

No excuses for Lena to play and behave the way she did, but common... to say something like she should not be a "possible" player representative and other crap is just :haha:

Huh.
Elena strikes me as too shy to be a "player representative". I can't imagine her doing what Venus did at the Dubai trophy ceremony. Anyway, Elena and Venus are close to the same age. There's no indication that Venus will retire before Elena to begin with.

Not sure about Ana, but Venus has made lots or ridiculous comments, like that comment about Clijsters after her Us Open loss to her; or after her loss to Chacky when she said that she wanted to stay undefeated on American Hardcourts. Maria knows how to make good PR for herself so you don't hear any sour comments after losses but her behaviour on court and after wins is partucularly ungracious IMO (like aginst Hantu at IW or against Safina at RG :tape:).

All the woman are human and you can find examples when they have made snippy remarks if you look. Overall, despite the need for bulletproof Yonex brand sneakers on some notable occasions, Lena is consistently cited by other players and journalists as being one of the nicer women on the tour.

But she does have those moments where she seems to determined to be the butt of her own blonde jokes.

Doesn't matter if she wanted to play or not. They are the rules. As a top player she's obliged to play Indian Wells, and there's no way of getting out of it.

... oh wait

For someone who dislikes Venus so much, you sure as hell stay on her coochie :scared:. Remembering what she said and shit? You're one bad mother fucker :rocker:. Stay stalking posts about Venus . And geez, at least add some sugar to those sour grapes :spit:.

Yes, I stay talking about Venus and you stay living on "Planet Venus" where only her fans are allowed to talk about that overrated, inconsistant player. Where everyone who dares to say something negative or critical about her gets a nasty insult  :help:

One more reason to hate the stupid roadmap.

I'm pretty sure Lena has complained about having mandatory tournaments on opposite sides of a continent in the past.

I'm the last one to defend the Demented one :help: but you have absolutely no clue what time and effort she put into her off season training ---- and she's played consecutive weeks  There's no telling what toll this has taken on her body. If she says she's tired and 3 weeks is not enough resting time then so be it.

So what are you saying? U think its reasonable that players need a month vacation, less than 3 months into the season? Come on, u can't really mean that. Unless she had mono, 3 weeks should be enough for ANY player not to use lack of rest as an excuse. Tell me you had an injury Elena, don't insult our intelligence by saying you are so tired that 3 weeeks isn't enough time to rest.

I don't really take Elena's comments seriously, since she is a bad loser and is clearly angry with herself. In that context players say things out of frustration that you can't take at face value - and for me, i think players should be allowed to be pissy (as long as it isn't aimed at opponents) after losing. It shows they care. My only point is Elena's fans should not try to make sense out what Elena said, because it makes no sense.

Reading the tennis.com article, I was ready to lambaste Dementieva for a poor attitude. Then I decided to read the actual interview and . . wtf? Steve Tignor of tennis.com needs to go way easier on whatever strange brews he's imbibing. There is nothing in the interview that suggests anything other than a disappointed and tired player.

The interview (http://www.bnpparibasopen.org/4/players/interviews/2009/dementieva314.asp)
---------------
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. I heard you like to call home to talk to your dogs. What do you say to them?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Oh, no, actually, I don't do that. I think they just made it up.

Q. On a day like today, it's a hard day. What positive can you take away that you can apply to the next tournament, next match? Do you learn something on a day like today that you can think about next time?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: I'm sure every time you lose you're trying to learn something. I just feel like I probably shouldn't come here because I played a lot of the matches in the beginning of the year and I just needed you know, just to take some time off and get ready and recovery.
So, yeah, I didn't have enough time, so just, you know, will think about it and just make some changes for the next tournament.

Q. What's your most important advice for young tennis players?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, I think the most important is enjoying and to like competition, because that's what it's all about. Play as much as you can just to get used to it.

Q. Your serve years ago was much slower. You've made some changes. How much better are you now as a server than you were three years ago?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: I think I am better.

Q. Today was just an off day? Was there any particular problem or reason?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Well, just like I said earlier, you know, I think I shouldn't come here because I didn't have enough time to recovery after playing so many matches in the beginning of the year. Just needed a much longer break to get ready to play at my best.
So it was a very short period of time after Dubai. When it was about time to start to practice again, I was just too tired. That probably was the worst match for a long time for me. I'm sure there was a reason for that.
I played a lot of the matches, once again. There's nothing I can do about it. I had a good start. All I need was just to have a good break and start over again.

Q. Is it just fatigue? There's no injury or anything like that?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No. I just think my mind wasn't there. I was not really exciting about playing this match. Just didn't play at all.

Q. Did the heat factor in at all? Was the weather any sort of...
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: No. Actually didn't feel too hot to me.

Q. You go straight to Miami now or what do you do now?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Yes. I just want to take a few days off and get ready for Miami.

I can feel her fatigue in her words. Like I said earlier, I know how she feels and I sit behind a desk everyday. She really should have paced herself at the start of the year, she's not 16 anymore. Perhaps she could learn something from how Venus and Serena set their schedule.

When I seen the title thread the first and only name that came into my head was Eleni Daniilidou.

A lot of people care. I would you like to have them each PM you just to verify that?

BTW it's "When I saw" not "When I seen" (Free pass if English isn't your native language)

Happy SPD!
