Abanda Wins Major U12 Title in Auray
www.tenniscanada.ca
February 23, 2009

Montreal’s Françoise Abanda captured the girls’ singles Super Open 12 title in Auray, France on Sunday, defeating Russian Anastasia Rychagova 6-3, 7-6 to secure the championship. The esteemed event is one of the stops on the European Junior Tour.

Abanda, who is part of Tennis Canada’s national U12 program, performed incredibly well and did not drop a set all week. She steamrolled through the 22 country competition with a 6-3, 6-1 first round win over Bianka Bekefi, 6-1, 6-0 victory against France’s Océane Mouton, 6-1, 6-0 defeat over Spanish Paula Badosa Gibert, 6-3, 6-1 quarter-final win against France’s Victoria Muntean and a 6-0, 6-3 victory against France’s Vinciane Remy in the semis.

Abanda faced her stiffest competition in the final versus Rychagova, having to overcome deficits in the second set to earn the top prize.

“Françoise played a flawless first set,” said Andre Labelle, Under 12 program leader and national coach. “Even though she was down 4-1 and 5-2 in the second set, she never stopped fighting.”

The impressive list of past champions at this tournament puts Abanda in exceptional company. Previous winners include World No.1 Rafael Nadal, World No.2 Dinara Safina and two-time Auray champions Kim Clijsters and Andy Murray.

Abanda’s win is a significant accomplishment and positive progress. She reached the Round of 16 at the singles event and claimed the doubles title in 2008 alongside Daniella Silva (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

Francoise is the 1st seed in the 29th All Canadian ITF Junior Championships 2011 (G5) this week. Good luck! Francoise is 14 now, so her senior debut should be coming up in seniors soon. She'll probably get a few Canadian ITF wildcards, at least I hope so.

Francoise won the All Canadians, then won a G2 in Morroco. That brought her ranking to 89, and now she should go up to somewhere in the 60's (just lost in the QF of a G1). She's the first 1997 girl in the top 100!

I must say, I was a bit disappointed that she didn't play in an of the Canadian ITF's, though.

Franckie's been playing since quite a few weeks now, winning a couple rounds in both the GA in Italy and the G1 in Belgium. She also won the double in both events with Vickery.

But yes, good win today over Bencic! :D I don't expect her to do amazingly well at RG on clay, but I hope she'll have a decent week :) She could probably end in the top 15 close to the top 10 after RG.

yes she will be, she had nothing to defend at Wimbledon so a SF in single and at least a SF in double should put her around 6-7 I think.

Here's a video interview of Francoise after her loss in the Wimbledon semifinals against Elina Svitolina. It shows a bit of her playing the match as well!

lSeUFpYh4SI

My French isn't perfect, but basically here are some of the main points that I got. :p

*In the match she was up 2-0 in the third set, her opponent started to play better and was better in the key moments and won the important points.
*There was an incident with the umpire where she thought she was up 40-30, she served an ace which was called out by the linesperson, the umpire corrected it as "in" but instead of getting the point, it had to be replayed. Francoise wasn't happy because her opponent didn't touch the ball and thought she deserved the point.
*It was hard playing several matches in one day due to the rain, and she was a bit tired, but it was the same for her opponent.
*A lot of things happened at 2-0 in the third set, there were three bad calls, but she acknowledges that her opponent played better.
*She talks about her Facebook Fan Club (http://www.facebook.com/groups/287771451302685/), she says that she reads the messages and thanks everyone for their support.
*She was born in Montreal, Canada, but her origins are from Cameroon.
*Her Mum is at the tournament with her and supports her, but doesn't pay too much attention to her during the match otherwise you could get penalised for on-court coaching.
*She'll play two $50,000 events in Canada and then qualifying at the Roger's Cup in Montreal.
*She thanks everyone for their support, Canadians, Cameroonians and everybody else who follows her.

She seems like a really nice girl. :)

doubt she will, she's playing Repentigny soon then the USO jr. They are a few more ITF tournament in Canada on her calendar year and Quebec City WTA I doubt she'll wanna "waste" chance do play good pro matches in a WTA q draw that might see her lose 1st round in a foreign country. Carol Zhao 17, ON, Second Year

It's great to see two Canadians in the final! Zhao is sort of overshadowed by Abanda and Genie, so good luck to her. I totally had forgotten that Petrick wasn't in the NTC program, my guess is she'll take Surin's spot next year. Francoise probably has the match on her racquet at this point, since she seems to hit quite a bit harder. I'll be happy with either result.

I wonder who will take Genie's spot now tho. As Genie will probably go in the NTC but for the Pro girls. I don't reckon a lot of younger good girls, maybe Akkerman? But how old is she? Think it's a bit useless to give the spot to an older girl, better have them young and work their way each years. Petrick is the obvious choice, she has a good game really.

I had totally forgotten that Genie would be out of the program. I wouldn't be all that surprised to see them give it to Kopcalic. She's 1998, has an itf ranking and played really well at the World Junior Team tennis. I doubt they'd give it to Akkerman for the same reasons you said.

Franckie wins the final 6-2 6-3! She was really focused today and really consistent, loved when she was really hitting a shot she was so dominant. I like how she doesn't show any emotions but when it got tense you see her take life. She yelled a few c'mon in the end of that match which was nice tosee :)

I saw her today and she didn't blame bad by any means, like she didn't made much UEs but she was way too passive. the sad thing is that when she's going for her shots and she's being aggressive she's dictating the points really easily. It seems so natural to her as well, it's like if she's forcing herself to be more consistent, therefore more passive but she becomes too passive. I guess that's something they are working on with her. They probably told her to be more patient and she just becomes too passive. Disappointing nonetheless

Yeah tough lost I like her too atleast get a couple wins at this event but she still young, I agree with you on her being patient & passive when I saw her last on a video playing at Canadian Open Junior Championships, but I guess they want her too work the point and then go for your winner beside being a Brainless ball basher I guess, but Yeah she still young and I think her game going improve big time over the years like a venus :)

The ITF Junior Circuit recently caught up with Francoise Abanda from Canada to find out more about the 15 year-old.

ITF Junior Circuit: Hi Francoise, can you tell us a bit about where you're from?

I’m from Montreal, Canada, I’ve always lived in Montreal. My parents are from Cameroon but I was born in Montreal. I’ve never been to Cameroon but I still have a lot of family there. I’d love to go there and see where I come from.

ITF Junior Circuit: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

I have 1 sister, Elisabeth. She’s 18 and at college. She's also played ITF events.

ITF Junior Circuit: How did you start playing tennis?

Jean-Claude Lemire introduced me to tennis. I started with him at 7 with a bunch of other kids. He coached my sister as well. At the age of 12 I started playing with Tennis Canada, going on tours and training at the National Tennis Centre in Montreal. Gradually I started with the federation, it wasn’t like the next day.

ITF Junior Circuit: Was your sister playing tennis and you followed her footsteps?

I kind of followed her, yeah. I always wanted to do what she was doing!

ITF Junior Circuit: Do you like any other sports?

Speed-skating. I did it pretty often. I was in a group for a year or two.

ITF Junior Circuit: And what are your hobbies?

I like to go shopping, big cities. I’m not so big on nature, I just like big cities so New York is good.

ITF Junior Circuit: And what's your favourite city?

I don’t really have one. I love Montreal, where I live. I also love New York, but not to live. I like Asia too! I don’t really like Europe though. Everything is way different there.

ITF Junior Circuit: Which is your favourite tournament?

US Open. I’ve never been to Australia but i think i'll play there next year, so we'll see.

ITF Junior Circuit: Do you have a favourite surface?

Clay would be my last, but pretty much everything. I like grass.

ITF Junior Circuit: Did you enjoy playing at Wimbledon?

It was my first time playing on grass but I think I responded pretty well! I made the semis, which is my biggest achievement so far.

ITF Junior Circuit: Who’s your tennis idol?

Williams sisters and Gael Monfils. Gael is very entertaining to watch and he’s always having a good time on court. I Liked the Venus before when she was 20. I think she was better than she is now. Definitely Serena because she’s just dominating our game now so it’s somebody that I look up to.

ITF Junior Circuit: How does school work for you?

I study in Montreal and it’s a regular school where I have to go every day so I have to fit my tennis around studying. I can’t study in Toronto where they do online school so I go to a high school. I have to be very organised. At the NTC we have a tutor who helps us so that helps quite a lot. It’s tough though. Sometimes I have to miss practice because of exams. I play tennis every day though. I do 2hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon. In between I go to the class room to do my school work. I could go to the States to study but it’s different as I’d then be studying in English.

ITF Junior Circuit: So French is your first language?

Yeah. I speak French and the English.

ITF Junior Circuit: Is tennis what you want to do full time?

Yep. I’m graduating at 17 years old and then I can do tennis full-time. I’m trying to not get behind at school so I can just get it done! ITF Junior Circuit:

What's your ambition in tennis?

Top 10 WTA and to win a Grand Slam would be my dream.

ITF Junior Circuit: Which Grand Slam?

US Open. It’s a lot of fun. New York is out-going, the crowds are crazy, people are screaming. It’s not like Wimbledon, which is more traditional.

ITF Junior Circuit: How was the Junior Fed Cup and playing for your country?

It was good. Canada don’t have a lot of big tennis superstars so it’s an opportunity to make history in Canada and help other kids to play more tennis. The national sport is ice hockey and tennis isn’t very big. A lot of Canadians are doing well at the moment though.

ITF Junior Circuit: Does it help having lots of other Canadian players doing well?

I have competition all the time. Of course, seeing one of the girls i train with win Wimbledon, it gives you a boost, it's like 'Yeah, I can do that!!'

ITF Junior Circuit: Thanks Francoise, great to chat to you.

yes! Franckie when she goes passive never wins! She didn't shake the umpire hand at the end either. She shouldn,t let this bother her but I feel there were so many bad calls against her in that match, it was a shame. It being against a local girl as well make it even more suspicious and frustrating for her. Hopefully the clay in the next two big juniors won't bother her too much. She needs to win them or at least make the finals if she wants to get comfortably in the top 5 or 3 before the AO. Would give her a GREAT opportunity to get a nice draw at the AO and maybe getting her first GS junior!

She is SO fit!! She's only 15 so work out is not good at her age. She already has little to none bodyfat and she can't get muscle mass just yet imo. I hope and think only a little technique change on that big loop and the shoulder injury should be fine and not come back. It's possible it's one of those "growin up" injuries. Lots of juniors have those at the time they grow up, Genie Bouchard and Laura Robson were quite hurt by that throughout their junior career.

yes Genie was also injured. Lots of juniors are at this age because they are still growing up. Franckie's injury is a bit more bothering tho since it's at her shoulder again. Hopefully she'll be careful with that.

He seems to be doing well enough in preparing his players. I'm sure Coach LaRose must be teaching his players to take their training more seriously than Simon LaRose did back in the day. Kind of ironic that he's one of Tennis Canada's go to guys to prepare young women on the verge of becoming pro or going to college.

Simon LaRose, with the flashy outfits, sideburns, five o'clock shadow and the earring. And I guess a reputation for loving a party. The bad boy of Canadian Tennis. Beat Guga in Montreal one year and then flamed out of tennis so spectacularly.

Looking forward to FA's season.

he got suspended for taking marijuana and he called it a career. He's very good at getting the girls ready for the pro tour, but once the girls have reached a certain level he never seemed to have been able to push them further so that's why he's a good transitional coach. Franckie will need to find a more experienced coach when she'll be out of the juniors tho imo.

The only concerning thing is that it's her first events sicne her injury, those are really strong ITF and they are on clay .... lol nothing to help her.

On the other hand if she wanted to use her JE she didn't have much other choice. In a couple months she'll be playing juniors RG and Wimby with maybe 1 or 2 warm up events for each so she won't really have time for any pro event to use those JE. Then During the summer she's gonna have a bunch of Canadian WC into the ITF there. As she can't play too many tournaments and it,s not in her best interest to play alot of events in a really short period of time I guess this was the most sensible choices.

She is only allowed to play very little events per year and I'm sure she wanna save some for the canadian tournaments. There are 5 ITF I think and 2 WTA so she can't play too much right now. Hopefully she'll test her game in one or 2 junior clay tournaments before Rg.

Apparently she got the OK from the doctor to get back on the court. So it's looking that she's really recovered from the shoulder injury! :)

“Within the next five years, I would like to be ranked within the top 40 in the WTA,” said the 15-year-old rising tennis star. “I also see myself winning a grand slam.”
Francoise has captured three junior titles in 2011 but her best performance to date was reaching the semifinals of the 2012 Wimbledon Championship.
Her older sister Elizabeth used her tennis prowess to land an athletic scholarship to the University of Miami but Francoise is taking a different route to stardom.
“I plan on turning professional in a few years,” she said with quiet confidence. “I love playing tennis. It’s my passion. I love the fact that it’s competitive and there’s no time limit. If you lose the first set, you can come back and still win the match.”

Abanda withdrew at the last minute of the tournament, leaving organizers and supporters stunned. Recall that Françoise Abanda return to play after a shoulder injury, which persisted for some time.
In an interview with TC Media, the tournament director, Richard Quirion, said the withdrawal of the Champion ITJBN last year by a lack of preparation time, and that his fitness will be longer ....
New York, New York
TC Media also learned that his fitness will not be so long that it's because Abanda be the U.S. Open next week. It seems that New York as Red Bull gives wings ...
Recall ending there is now a celebrity wall at the entrance of Louis-Philippe Picard stage with the winners who marched in recent years to ITJBN. In 1996, Cristina Popescu became the first Canadian to win the title, and you know what? In 1997, she was back on the courts to defend his title ... That is the seed of champion ...

Seriously she's so young, if she doesn't feel ready to play a tournament it's surely not because she's lazy. She hasn't played in almost a year (minus that match in March where she came back too soon). Clearly one more week will be helpful for her. She has nothing to prove and with the results she had in her last few Juniors event she won't be playing much of those, probably only the GS unless she's not back at her old level any time soon.

Think conditions were probably bad after they resumed. Gasquet was toweling dry the baseline after every point on TV during the first set of his match with Milos.

Blew a match points, light rain is falling making you extra miserable. It wouldn't be the first time a junior folded in that situation.
