Its no secret the WTA top 10 has been a hot mess ever since henin retired. If every player on the tour right now was playing their best tennis possible who/should would the top 10 be.

Mine would go..

1. Serena Williams
2. Venus Williams
3. Maria Sharapova
4. Dinara Safina
5. Ana Ivanovic
6. Jelena Jankovic
7. Elena Dementieva
8. Svetlana Kuznetsova
9. Anna Chakvetadze
10. Viktoria Azarenka

03/04 Maria/Jelena
05/06 Dinara/Elena
07/08 Svetlana/Ana
09/10 Victoria/Flavia

I put /s cause I really didn't wanna decide.

Anna Chakvetadze and Viktoria Azarenka could probably be knocked down out the top 10 for other players.

If everyone was playing their best tennis, Jelena would just be hit off the court and there wouldn't be much she could do about it.

What does 'best' mean?

Does it mean their best ever point?
Does it mean their best ever tournament or match?
Does it mean their best ever year?

If Serena Williams played her best, she'd serve aces and return winners, and therefore, not lose a single point.

This is sort of a silly thread...if a lot of people, even in the top 50, played their very best, they could beat the majority of the tour (even the very top players)

I disagree. Even if the majority of the tour played their A+ game they couldn't beat Serena if Serena was also playing her A+ game.

In fact if Serena was playing her A+ game every match she would be virtually unbeatable, maybe Venus could if she was playing her A++ game, lol.

But it's a moot point because nobody plays their A+ game every match.

I would put Sveta at #4 behind Maria. Sveta is incredibly underestimated on this board but at her peak (and it is like 1/10000000 chance of ever seeing it), she is incredibly talented and just a marvel to observe. She has such raw talent that when she can piece it all together, even if just for 3 or 4 points, it is astonishing to watch.

What does "playing their best tennis possible" mean? For Venus, does it mean zero unforced errors? Does it mean each of her serves would be 131 MPH? (I believe 131 MPH is her record.)

I'm going to assume it doesn't mean that, but it means the best that one could imagine them playing realistically.

Ok thats it....tired of hearing this crap about how the WTA is in shambles and is a mess since Henin retired. The only thing Henin's retirement did regarding the top 10 was have more players within reach of the #1 ranking. She was one person, so if her retirement made the whole top 10 a mess after she retired, then it was a mess before she retired based on your comment. The only difference is in the #1 ranking being so up for grabs. She definitely was the most consistent player before her retirement but had she stayed on I think we may be having a hot mess argument about her given her early season losses last year, and that absolute beatdown Serena gave her in their last match. There are a number of things that have come together that I think makes it seem as though Henin's retirement is the reason. No. Maria has been out, the play of Ivanovic has gone down. Je-lame-a is still the Hingis post 2000 of the tour (i.e win smaller tournaments but no slams). Venus and Serena are there winning big tournaments. Safina, Demented, and the Kooz are just head cases so thats ashame, but they were head cases while Henin was playing, just like Jankovic wasn't winning slams when Henin was playing. So...I don't get it. How does one person's retirement make the WHOLE top 10 a hot mess that wasn't a hot mess when that one person was still playing the game?

I'm going to slightly revise what I posted earlier, and assume that Venus "playing her best possible" would have her hitting every serve at 131 MPH. I don't think she'd be beatable in that case. But then I think htat Serena's "best possible" tennis would have her returning every 131 MPH serve for winners, in which case Serena would be unbeatable. But Venus's "best possible" would have her returning Serena's returns for winners. It's an unanswerable question.:lol:

I agree with this list pretty much, except that I would put Amelie ahead of Ana simply because Amelie has two GS titles and made one other final, plus she's just won more titles. Everything else I can agree with. The 9 and 10 spots are interchangeable because they really haven't proven themselves on a big stage or taken any really big titles.

I canot believe I am the only one who thinks that Schnyder is one of the talented players and at her best would be in top 10.

I think so too, but even at her best she would choke like crazy.

Its no secret the WTA top 10 has been a hot mess ever since henin retired. If every player on the tour right now was playing their best tennis possible who/should would the top 10 be.
The top 10 was a hot mess even before Justine retired.

Ok, first of all please calm down. It was just an innocent question. But everyone here bitches about so and so not playing their best tennis. It was just a question about who should the top 10 be if everyone was consistent and bringing their A game.. Thats all.

I am calm thank you, and the response wasn't to your question about who would be top 10 if everyone played their best tennis. I had no issue with that. Its a pretty interesting question. My whole comment was about the "WTA has been a mess since Henin retired" comment.

The top 10 was a hot mess even before Justine retired.

Summing up this thread one of the things to show up is "Let's have no faith whatsoever in Bepa Z and stick some players she routes regularily in place of her!"

Agree for amélie , plus she just is able to beat power players frequentely like Sharapova or ANNA . Has just beaten Ivanovic last month when the two players were not at their best but re-started to play a high level tennis .

For 9 and 10 , well i thought when at their best Vaidisova had more impressive results than Petrova , yet 4 semis in the 4 GS at only 17 , the record of Petrova is not that impressive .In the other hand , yes Petrova was Top 5 and more consistant than Vaidisova your alright , and its discutable (i dont know if the word exists) lol .

I can see your point, but the problem I have with Vaidisova is that she had a couple of strong seasons, but look at where she is right now. She couldn't buy as second round win to save her life. Whereas with Petrova I think injuries have stopped her upward progress more than anything, and yes she is a headcase (all Russians have some defect), but at least she's been relatively consistent throughout the years and has managed to stay in the top 20 throughout.

1.) Mary Pierce
2.) Serena Williams
3.) Venus Williams
4.) Elena Dementieva
5.) Amelie Mauresmo
6.) Jelena Dokic
7.) Maria Sharapova
8.) Jelena Jankovic
9.) Svetlana Kuznetsova
10.) Carla Suarez-Navarro

I put Mary Pierce at number one because she hasn't officially retired yet and I still maintain that when she's playing at the top of her game or close to it she's the best player on the tour, hands down.

She has retired officialy, were you in a cave when it happend? :tape:

I think so too. Shes left handed and has a wicked serve. Unfortunetly, she doesnt get a lot of press and I rarely ever see her matches played on TV, the only ones of 2008 I can remember were the quarterfinals of the French and US Opens where she was defeated by Ivanovic and Dementieva respectively. Plus shes already 30 and there is only so much time before the younger generation catches up to her and her ranking gradually falls into the 20s and beyond. But I would like to see her reach another semifinal or better peraps at the French Open this year which I think will be the most exciting and unpredictable slam of the year.

If everyone were playing to their maximum potential and producing the best tennis they were capable of?

Then:
1. Venus
2. Serena
3. Maria
4. Svetlana
5. Ana.
6. Amelie
7. Dinara
8. Elena.
9. Jelena
10. Vera

But it's too easy to overlook players who have dangerous games that are wildly inconsistent, and are more often off than 'on'. (Razzano for example, Bartoli for another.) If they were playing their best tennis on a consistent basis, then who knows?

Then you have the sisters (who are both playing well enough, but are not playing great tennis or even consistent tennis); Ana (form and confidence have deserted her and is finally returning); Momo and Maria (injuries and long lay-off in Maria's case); and especially Sveta (:speakles:) who is having a particularly horrid run of things, I think that they have played and can play better tennis.

Elena and Vera on the other hand have never played so well.
Jelena is a funny case. She is also in a slump right now, but late last year is as good as I've ever seen her play. While she could certainly return to last year's form, it remains to be seen whether or not she has yet another level to go to.

And Wimbies and total titles and Olympic golds and overall H2H.

Also, I believe that Venus is 5-2 against Serena since 2004. And one of Serena's wins was Venus choking, not Serena winning (last year's USO). So, yeah, I think 2008/2009 Venus at her best beats 2008/2009 Serena at her best.

Then Venus and Serena on opposite sides of the draw

would meet in an ENDLESS final.
