Serena, a little too sloppy from you today.

I am very surprised at this result usually when the matches are tight three setters Serena tends to win. Very good for Venus I think. I think even better then the YEC win this may give Venus some confidence.

Serena :weirdo: Way too inconsistent today, unfortunately. That first set must've been absolutely dire, looking at the stats, and although she picked up her play in the second I don't think she managed to maintain a steady level for a prolonged period at any point, whereas Venus was more stable.

Entertaining final set :yeah:

VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS VENUS!

Just sooo happy for her! She never gets results like this early in the year! BIG final tommorow i am sure she will win.

Serena, serena, serena. Not good enough. AT 5-5 BP it did look like she was going to win it because she was striking the ball so well!

Final set was edge of your seat stuff but i wish that was how the WHOLE match was.

Not the best quality but we should be glad they made it competitive, that's the first step to a better tour!

I think since winning Wimbledon last year over Serena gave Venus a lot of confidence. Venus is over "feeling sorry" for defeating her younger sister she wants to win and she wants to win badly. I feel the Sisters matches are becoming much more competitive now then ever before. Look at the handshake Serena was not happy about losing she hates losing to Venus.

That was horrible :o

I never seem to enjoy Williams match ups, even the Wimbledon final last year was a little boring to me. Serena never brings it and had a shadow of the passion that she played with yesterday. The first two sets were beat downs without much tennis and the third was fairly average.

They didn't exactly seem very loving at the end either.

Anyhow, congrats Venus. I expect you to win tommorow, you deserve it, but god who knows with Virginie at the moment  I remember that Tokyo final.

:woohoo: Go Venus! 2 wins in a row over Serena, and overall a fantastic week so far incl. the win over Dementieva. It's safe to say her season has begun now, and a win in the final would be the perfect way to forget about the AO.

Serena  Still an exceptional year from her, 4 tourneys played = 4 Semi-Finals :worship: Good on her for playing Dubai and playing this match after last week's injury troubles. I'm glad they are over with now and she can rest up for her defense of Miami.

Strange match, Serena obviously in pain at times, but at other times she was running everything down with no problems.

First two sets were weird, with Serena gifting the first and then Venus returning the favour somewhat in the second.

Third set was high quality and exciting (in my opinion), I am glad Venus has won, and it should be an interesting final now, as Virginie Razzano has beaten Venus 2 years ago, and the head to head is only 2-1 in Venus' favour.

Surely it can't be long before S & V Williams are ranked #1 and #2 again?

Personally I am just happy Venus didn't choke, she allowed her level to drop off against an obviously hurt Serena........ and we saw last year how Venus couldn't close out against Serena at the USO.

I think Serena should take a rest now for a few weeks, she doesn't want to get hurt badly and at the end of the day there are more important things than keeping Jankob***h at bay in the rankings department.

Feb 20th, 2009, 05:26 PM
that one return from serena in the tie break was so in! venus should have given back that point, she saw probably, that the call was wrong. can't believe that one wrong decision from the lines judge can influence the game, its crazy. reminds me of that williams-capriati QF :o:tape:

This was not a good match at all IMO. Serena was nowhere near the level of play she had yesterday.. but nowhere near at all. She was missing easy shots by miles, and sometimes couldn't buy a first serve. Venus was more steady.. and had clutch serving in the end.

I think Serena had something with her right knee.. she kept touching it. And she was not extending the movement on her serve, and the footwork was not good at all.

So you would have prefered Serena to have won that game when the ball was clearly out? It wasn't Vee's fault anyway. Yes, she challenged quite late but it is up to the umpire to decide if the player can challenge or not in the end so blame him.

Anyway, good win Vee;) I'm not happy with how she went about it and almost threw it away but a win is a win:bounce:

That call in the tiebreak :fiery: Serena hit a killer return that Venus got her racket on but couldn't do anything, it was called out but hawkeye showed it clearly in. i would say i've never seen a worse first set from a world number 1 but sadly i've had to witness ivanovic and jankovic playing when #1. serena played better in the 2nd venus predictabley fell away. serena was struggling in the 3rd set yet venus couldn't take advantage. serena played a piss poor breaker and it was GSM venus.

serena rest that knee, the last thing tennis needs is you out of action.

venus well you won it in the end, even though serena was throwing you the match at stages and you still wouldn't grab it.

How is Venus a cheater? She challenged late. So?

It is up to the chair umpire. If the chair umpire said it was late, then the challenge wouldn't have happened. The chair umpire allowed the challenge so therefore, it was not late.

And the fact is, the ball was out. Would you want Serena to defeat her sister by getting a call wrong? Do we not remember 2004 US Open?

Oh brother.

That was Serena's match. It should've been 4-2 in the third. Venus waited like 5 min. to challenge.

But when Serena loses it's all sadness and cold handshakes and grumpiness.

They didn't exactly seem very loving at the end either.

LOL. If you didn't know by now, Serena Williams is a BAD loser. Some people think of that as a character flaw. On the contrary, its a huge plus for a professional athlete. Richard Williams was right all along about his daughters. He said Serena would be better largely because "she's meaner". Venus has told stories about how she and her sisters would have to let Serena win in board games or else 'Ree would cry and whine for hours. Baby sis hates losing - really, really hates losing - to ANYBODY. I love 'em both, but they are very different people.

It's times like this I hate being part of this fanbase. :o

You can't go around calling this player and that player a cheater just because there were a few bad calls. Sure it was unfortunate with that line call in the tie-break but that's tennis for you. It's not like Serena is the only player this has happened to. You just have to move on because complaining isn't going to change anything and it just makes you come across as bitter. Be proud of Serena for even making the match competitive given that she was obviously struggling with that knee.

I think people need to let it go with the negativity. The Williams Sisters have gotten over the hype about their match ups this is the nineteenth time they have played each other. I think Venus has finally realized she has to give everything she has in these matches. I feel when Venus and Serena were younger that Venus worried a bit about how the losing would affect Serena. Now I feel Venus is really giving everything she has. Right now on the WTA the only player that can consistently challenge Serena is Venus.

Then it sounds like you're directing the blame at the wrong person. Whether it was late or not is up to the umpire to decide, not the player. Venus lets shit fly much too often, and I'm glad she actually made a move this time. The principle of the matter is that the ball was clearly long and the right person won the point.

Yet both segrigation (or segregation) have alyways known how annoying you are. Id say it for the rest of the Chakvetadze fan base but I dont want to tar all 3 of them with the same brush as you.

lmao my posts are only annoying to you because i post things you don't like to admit or read. the behaviour of certain williams fans in this thread is disgraceful, its just normaly the disgraceful behaviour is directed at another fan base.

Congrats Venus!
Serena played Sh** in the first set, while Venus could hardly do any wrong. 6 df, wtf? And her body language was puzzling, to say the least.

Thankfully, from the 2nd set, credit to her, she was able to get herself together and give us a treat of a match! I really loved the variety from Serena, using such wonderful slice, then followed by a brilliantly struck winner:hearts:! The angles she created were also brilliant at times. Its a pity she appeared to be struggling with a left ?knee problem, and its testament to her greatness that she could still tough this one out and give Venus a run for her money!

And Venus, her serving particularly in the first set and a bit was just ! Early in the 2nd set, the commentator said she had 88% 1st serves in, booming down a lot of aces along the way. Then her serve went out the window, as Serena started to discover hers . I was thinking "why can they not both serve great at the same time?" And when they did, it produced a really exciting and tense final set. Some of the volleys Venus produced in this match were just :speakles:! And the sliced overheads :D! But the way Serena gobbled up her second serves at times:scared:!

Venus would have been very disappointed to lose this match against a battling Serena that was carrying an injury, and after having really good chances to close the match out (that shocking FH miss at 15-30 that would have given her double match point :tape: among others).

Good luck in the finals, Venus! Serena  will be back:yeah:.

TRUE NO.1 IS VENUS WILLIAMS

Serena, showed the metal strength of a wet paper towl, lead 3-1 final set, points to lead *6-5 and nice TB full of errors. Some no.1 we have.

Not the best quality but we should be glad they made it competitive, that's the first step to a better tour!

Difference between Venus and most Serena fans=
when Serena loses her fans go around bashing Venus with anything and everythin, Venus fans take it out on Venus.

Omg, Serena fans are sounding just like Serena after a loss now. :tape: Venus did not cheat, she checked the mark as she did for all and when she saw that it was out she decided to challenge, she didnt abuse the challenge system and i think she was entitled to that considering she barely ever challenges, even less though than Serena. The fact is, the ball was out, and it is pathetic to be crying over a point that Serena shouldnt have won in the first place :weirdo: get over it.

Was a bad match but so glad Venus composed herself and won, edge of the seat stuff. :speakles: Worried about Serena though, I really wanted her just to retire because its obvious she was slightly injured (although it didnt really affect her when she was running) I think when she injured her right knee she was overcompensating on the left one and now that one is sore have a good rest.

If the umpire has called the score "4-2" how can he then allow Venus to challenge? That's some bullshit right there and Serena agreed. Venus looked over all innocent like "I don't what they're talking about????" :tape:
so when should she challenge? before the umpire calls the score. Venus thought he was going to overrule but he didn't so she challenged. It's not like she was ready to serve and then decided to challenge. THE DAMN BALL WAS OUT!!! GET OVER IT!!!!! and the point in thee tie-break had nothing to do with Venus, she had her racket on the ball so they had to replay the point. Those are the rules....jeez, it's not that serious

I don't understand how people can call Venus a cheat, I think this is just pathetic to be honest.

Serena at her peak always had the beating of Venus mentally , now in more recent matches it seems Venus is holding up better in the psychological department (coming from a break down, saving break points with aces etc) and so now they are both extremely evenly matched when they both play well.

I know people are going to say Serena was injured etc, but she was still playing at a good level in the final set, and would have beaten any other player but Venus.
In the first set Serena didn't appear injured, she just played horrific tennis, and maybe if she had started better she could have got the win.

Venus deserved the win and to start discrediting her because of one late challenge stinks of just being a sore loser.

Venus rarely complains when she loses and NEVER bemoans Serena's success over herself, yet I am quite confident Serena will be in her usual post-match interview form of blaming anything but herself for the loss.

As you can see in the score its a scripted match..they talk about this before the match starts..
the next game they face off its serena who will win or its venus again but the next time they encounter serena will win...

IMO they will retire with the same no.of wins against each other...

they also arranged it with the umpire , oh and God as well to make some balls in and out.. it's all a conspiracy :scared:

I think people need to let it go with the negativity. The Williams Sisters have gotten over the hype about their match ups this is the nineteenth time they have played each other. I think Venus has finally realized she has to give everything she has in these matches. I feel when Venus and Serena were younger that Venus worried a bit about how the losing would affect Serena. Now I feel Venus is really giving everything she has. Right now on the WTA the only player that can consistently challenge Serena is Venus.

I think you are absolutely spot on. Venus has always been the nurturer. Now she has to just worry about Vee. Baby sis will get over it.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!! Where is that fainting smiley when you need it????!?!?!?! Venus had me on the edge of my seat in that 3 set, first a long game at 3-2 with so many bp's ...and she finally broke back!! And then at 5 all, I kept on saying "ace ace ace ace ace ace" really quietly to myself and when she did it, the largest ACE roar came out of my mouth, my mum was frigging scared  . That was just a real huge fight from Vee and a terrific result in the end. I am so happy about this win. But Rena go rest your knee and take a break, you pushed my queen to the limit and for being her sister I will always love you no matter what .

And its really sad to see so many people dissing Venus :sobbing:...why all the bitterness, its really sad...:sad:

Horrible display in first two sets.Serena was ridiculously bad in the first and Venus stopped playing at 1-1 in the 2nd.They both started to play better around 3-1 in the 3rd.Both were inconsistent with some great winners followed by DF or big UE.
Venus was a bit lucky in the tie-break and she didn't look too happy with her win (either because she played rather crappy tennis but still won or the fact that it was Serena on the other side of the net).

PS : Serena is such a bad actress :tape:

Overall, wasn't one of their best matches, but hey Venus won so I can't complain. :pNo, not one of the best, but hey 7-6 in the third? At a lower tier event? The ticket-buyers got their money's worth. So did we.

I really don't get the level of negativity. Their head to head going into the match was 9-9. Pretty clearly each knows how to beat the other. Serena didn't have her A game. Against the opponent who knows her game better than anyone ever will.
