View Full Version : Serena Williams - ``We are both the best players on the tour right now,''

Dodoboy.
Feb 19th, 2009, 10:45 PM
``We are both the best players on the tour right now,'' said Serena Williams, who is 9-9 against her older sister. ``Obviously, we both are also playing our best tennis right now, which definitely makes our matches more exciting.''

Ivanovic, a former top-ranked player, tried to unsettle Serena Williams with an attacking game at the Aviation Club.

``She was really trying to hit hard,'' said Serena Williams, who won the Australian Open last month. ``I think her goal was to go for broke. I was feeling a bit tired at the start of the second set, but wasn't too worried about her going 3-0 up as I knew I was just a break down. I knew I could pull it off.''

Let's just make sure Venus has a bunch of old veterans in her draw and we can have Williams Sisters finals. :hearts:

Well Serena can't be at fault for calling herself the best, at the moment she's even got the ranking to prove it. As for Vee, well a case can definitely be made for her or Dementieva- and since she just beat Lina_D routinely, you could argue either way with them.

Obviously Serena is going to (and always has) say something like that.

Serena for sure is the best player in the world. Between them, they do hold alot of impressive titles. But I wanna see Venus get that ranking right up there and play like she has in Dubai this week & Zurich/YEC alot more often before people start saying she's the (2nd?) best.

I want Venus to improve her ranking as well, but even without that, I have a hard time seeing who else I would say was 2nd-best. Jelena? Ana? Maria? Lena? Dinara? I can't really make a case for any of them over Venus at the moment.
I know Venus was upset at OZ, but the others are also being upset right and left (except for Lena, but Venus owns Lena), and I've not seen any of the others do anything that would surpass Wimby and YEC.

Serena is playing the best on tour right now, but if venus loses to her tomorrow then i would rank venus along with dementieva, safina and momo...all of them just playing one level below that of serena. Yeah too bad she spanked both of those at their home soil and the fastest court possible grand slam.

Sadly for WS it has been Henin the one that has got more slam wins since 2003 (eg more recently) to her credit than any other player, so any delusional trying to imply that Venus or Serena have been the best players recently are well...... at delusion..

Still no doubt Serena is the best right now, and it seems she will be for some time. She deserves it.

It's obvious. Why should it even be discussed. Of course they are the best. Holders of 4 out of last 6 biggest tournaments

Since Justine retired and Sharapova got injured, who could possibly challenge them? Some can, like Jankovic who was magnificient in USO final, but only few with mind of a latent champion like Dementieva can really beat them in the big one.. And very rare.

I find Justine's GS success a wee bit exaggerated outside of Roland Garros, especially if people continue to insist on comparing her record to Serena's.

2003: 2 (One with Serena not in attendance)
2004: 1 (Serena not in attendance)
2005: 1 (Serena not in attendance)
2006: 1 (Serena not in attendance)
2007: 2

Now, we know that Justine played beautifully from 2006-2007 especially, but if stats are all that matter, one slam for 3 consecutive years is hardly domination.

The sad fact is, from the perspective of a tennis fan, Serena and Justine, given their various injuries and personal crises occurring when they did, never developed into the full-fledged rivalry it might have been. Given the dynamics, I think it's difficult to insist on comparing their dominant periods.

They have to be delighted their butcher tennis prevails on technical, tactical and brain tennis where they are average... All those WS topics are working on my nerves especialy when most of the WS fans are insecure with themselves, have to convince themselves on and on they support the "best" players on tour with bashing other players... What about when the WS lose some matches ? They act like bad losers like there's no tomorrow. Did they never think they are responsible of the bad shape of the Women's tennis of nowadays ? Most of the players want to copy them. Yes, maybe they have very strong mentals but their tennis still is average except at ballbashing, physical, pacey and " jeu de fond de court " ( don't know how to say that in English ) ... They have no variation of tennis to counter them, they have done everything for that. For me they only are the Lance Armstrong of tennis.

That's not the point anyway. Why are you only comparing the WS grand slam wins since Henin started winning slams? She started playing slams in 99. To be fair you should compare their records since 99-00 when all 3 of them were playing. Oh wait, I guess we can't do that because it will skew your results. ;)

First, if it is not broken, then why fix it. V&S are not responsible for the "state" of women's tennis. They are responsible for themselves.

Second, Serena is a powerful player, no doubt, but she is very smart and tactful which is probably the reason why certain players who truly just bash the ball don't do as well as her.

Question:

I don't claim to have watched every match Serena Williams has played, or read every article about them, but it seems to me that if Mary Carillo and almost every other tennis announcer/journalist says that Serena only loses when she plays badly, why is it soooo awful when Serena says it?
Against Jelena Jankovic [in the Sony Ericsson Open final], it was obvious that Jelena had nothing to do with the outcome of that match. Your thoughts?
-- P-Sqaured, NYC

Wortheim:

Truthfully, I was thinking the same thing the entire tournament. And I came away with a new perspective re: Serena's sour reaction to defeat. I don't want to give Serena a total pass on her sore losing. (It's beneath her to attribute losing to an opponent's "lucky shots" or "playing at 40 percent.") But put yourself in her shoes.
She has the capability to blow away the world's top-ranked player 6-2, 6-0, as she did in the quarterfinals. She has the capacity to blow through a tournament, as she did last year in Australia and last week in Miami. She has the ability to render her opponents essentially meaningless. How immensely frustrating must it be to lose? When all cylinders are firing, she's virtually unbeatable. One can see how it must drive her nuts when that doesn't happen.
Larger point: I've said this before, but I don't see how you can follow the sport and not be awed by the whole Williams narrative. You couldn't craft a richer story than this: humble beginnings, great triumphs, outsider status, insider status, family tragedy, divorce, race, money, grace, disgrace, education, sports.
The plot wavers all the time. "Venus is cooked! No, wait: She's Wimbledon champ!" "Serena is bored! No, wait: She's trim and buff and toasting Justine Henin!" "Serena rules! No, she's pulling out of an event and taping a reality show." "Venus is looking fairly strong! No wait: She's taking an unexpected leave!" Really, it's just remarkable. And I'm not sure the Republic of Tennis realizes how lucky we are to have them around.

As a fan of many other sports besides tennis, I've never quite understood the preoccupation of many tennis fans with the need for players to "praise" their opponent in a post match interview. I don't get it, since its not expected in other sports I follow. For instance, Red Sox players are not expected to go on and on about how good the Yankees are after a loss. Fans don't wanna hear that. They wanna know why you didn't beat the Yankees, because they expect them to beat the Yankees! When Red Sox pitcher Padro Martinez said something about the Yankees "being his daddy" because they regularly beat his brains in, his fans thought he'd lost his mind and more important lost his mental edge. Its not his job to praise the Yankees - there are plenty of neutral observers to do that - he should be concentrating on playing better and beating the competition.

Now, it is very true that the Williams sisters don't go out of their way to praise their opponents, after wins or losses. But the sisters were taught, correctly in my extimation, that their destiny is in their own hands. They believe that if they play up to their capability, they will win. So naturally, when asked about the match, they are gonna want to talk about how they played...how their opponent played is irrelevant to them. That's not an insult, so players (AND ESPECIALLY THOSE PLAYER'S FANS) SHOULD NOT TAKE IT AS SUCH. Its just honestly how they feel.

The feeling I get reading the Williams criticism, is that much of it stems from the desire of fans of other players that the Williams' validate the talents of their favorite players. Well fine, but if I'm a competitive player, why would I want to boost the confidence of an opponent by praising them, when i might have to play them again next week? The criticism makes no sense to me. That's not their respnonsibility, and its condesending to think their favs need it. These girls are pros, not little leaguers who need thier egos protected. The WTA is not a country club league anymore, people. I think there's some sexism involved too, becasue the men aren't held to the same goofy standard. John McEnroe has glowing praise for Bjorn Borg NOW, he wasn't singing his praises quite so loudly whan he was competing against him. Beleive me, when Lindsay Davenport retires, Venus Williams will have nothing but effusive praise for her talents. Right now though, she's an opponent.

If some of the other top players felt the same way as the sisters (I'm thinking Kim, Elena, and maybe Momo just off the top) they would likely win more big matches. Sharopova, does seem to think this way, which gives her an advantage.

I think her record says it loud and clear.

Well honestly who can blame her for saying that? Venus has won Wimbledon and the YEC, Serena has the US Open, Australian Open, and the #1 ranking. They keep beating their "competition" consistently in the big matches. And the winner of this match will probably win the tournament. The statement seems accurate to me.

They've won the last 3 majors, the year-end Championships, and one of them is #1 in the world....why wouldn't Serena say that she and her sister are the best in the game right now?

When Maria comes back, it'll be more competitive, but it's not really a question right now.

And it still won't be a question when Pova gets back.

Why do you think she chose IW to come back. It was the only

event she knew the Sisters wouldn't be playing.

Wimbledon was the only Grand Slam that Henin never managed to win.
"It has been the biggest disappointment of my career," said Henin, who is establishing a tennis academy in Belgium. "It has a great tradition, I love it but my game wasn't quite good enough and I probably wasn't confident enough to win on grass."
She predicts defending champion and four-time winner Venus Williams will win again.
"I keep thinking that Venus is the best player on grass," she said. "She's so big and tall, so, for me, she's the favorite."

We should just be thankful that Serena doesn't call out the rest of the tour for being a bunch of pretenders and hacks ... because that is what they are.
amen to that

Given the dynamics, I think it's difficult to insist on comparing their dominant periods.great post :worship::worship::worship:

I've said this many times and this guy took the words right out of my mouth, once again. :worship::worship::worship:

And it still won't be a question when Pova gets back.

Why do you think she chose IW to come back. It was the only

event she knew the Sisters wouldn't be playing.

RG '03.........Justine had to CHEAT to win. Also Serena won AO
and Wimb. No Juicy domination

USO '03
AO '04.......After being in the finals of 5 of the last six Slams
Serena out with knee surgery ( 8 months ) and Venus
out with ab tear ( 6 months )Juicy was just the rat
that played while the Cats were away. No domination

RG'05........Juicy only won in the dirt. Sisters won 2 Slams.
No Juicy domination.

RG '06.......Juicy won only in the dirt. Got beat in 3 other Slam
finals embarassing herself in Oz. No domination.

RG '07
USO '07......Finally had a good run. Irony..The best year of her
career and the Sisters won 2 of the 4 Slams.

'08......... Run out of Tennis after worst Ass whuppings of her career
( 1 by Serena )

Hardly a dominant Player.

So by the same logic,

2000-Venus dominates
2002-Serena dominates
2003-None (apparantly :tape: )
2004-None
2005-None
2006-None
2007-Juicy clear domination.

So basically until Juicy retired, Juicy,Serena and Venus has only had one season where they "dominated" right?
