View Full Version : A House divided- WS fans time to chose sides!

Although I'm not a WS fan I find it interesting for those that love both Serena and Venus equally. I'm always fascinated as to who they decide to root for each time they play one another. I simply can't fathom remaining neutral and being happy with whomever wins and whomever loses. Especially when there are things at stake.

What's at stake for each sister:

Serena: With each week ranked as number one Serena keeps on adding to her 'Hall of Fame' legacy. Each win builds her confidence and allows her to keep collecting titles all the while solidifying her spot as the best in the game.

Venus: As for Venus, she's the sister with the most to prove. It seems the stakes are always higher for her. Only hardcore Vee fans believe that at her best she could take down Serena at her best, so every win over Serena helps build that case. This is Vee's first time back in the top five in ages and if she wants to march closer to the top spot she's gotta be able to take down little sis, not to mention the amount of confidence she'll come away with after beating Serena.

me i don't root for one over the other it's just impossible

AO was going to be the only time where i was going to root for Vee over Rena but that's cuz i really wanted Vee to win that tournament (since i think that she is capable of doing it and should have an Aussie trophy already) nothing else

"Off with her head!," yelled Sir Stefwhit.
"Annihilate her," proclaimed Watching.
"Beat her," uttered reetard.
"Beat her BADLY," promulgated Diesel.

Serena's loyal followers have spoken!

Time to pick a side all you "in-betweeners" what say you in this matter??

Most people know I ride with Vee and Serena. With that said, I base who I root for on who needs the win the most at that time. I think that Rena's Oz Open win combined with Vee's flameout, means that I'll root for Vee but if Rena gets it done I'll still be happy.

:o Don't much agree with your initial post. Don't think Venus takes much confidence from beating Serena. It's the other way around. When Serena beat Venus (and badly) in Miami that's when she really knew she had the goods to take everyone else down. Before that, she could really be a basketcase :help:

I think whoever wants it more will win. Serena will want revenge from that bagel set at YEC and Venus will want to redeem her Aus Open early loss and kickstart her year. :smash:

Doesn't matter how they've played up til now. It's all mental. Both Serena fans and Venus fans can hope, but neither group can be very confident. Except of course the really true Williams fans.

Same here. Venus needs this win more, so I'm going to root for her to win. I was rooting for Venus to win her first AO, and it was such a heartbreak to see her lost the way she did. I hope she takes this title.

This thread could be made about any matchup on the tour.

I generally like both of them the same but I'm rooting for Venus. It would be amazing if she did get to no.1 again. And also she didn't have a good AO so this would be a perfect way to start her year with a win over Serena and possibly another big hardcourt title following the YEC. It's all about confidence with Venus, and a title here would do that the world of good.

That's only true for me when someone tries to talk about them as one entity. They are two different people. But, on the other hand, I cheer for them individually and for who their sister is. For instance, I'll cheer for one because of course she's my fave and I want her to win, but also because she's playing someone who's beaten my other fave (her sister) and I want her to get revenge. :) There are many dynamics at play in being a total Williams Sisters fan. I just feel that whoever needs it or wants it more will win against the other and whatever happens after is what is meant to happen.

Big WS fan, always find it hard to cheer for one over the other and this case is no different. However, since it appears that Vee needs it more I am hedging towards her. I want both of them to cement their place in tennis history, not just Serena plus I want, no... NEED Vee ranking to go up, thus ensuring they can only meet in finals. Having said that I want a Williams to win this event and I have more confidence that if Serena got to the final it would be in the bag.

Not really. Venus and Serena, as tennis players, are not connected. I'd like to think their fans cheer for them for who they are individually, not for who they're sister is.
I think I understand what you're saying, but I only partly agree.

I agree that they are two different players and that just because you like one doesn't mean that there's any reason what so ever that you would have to support the other. You are right, they are two different players. I also agree that as singles players they have their own seperate destiny's on court. To that end I cheer wholeheartedly for Serena and don't feel compelled to do so for Venus.

Where I disagree with you is on the sentiment 'of them not being connected' as tennis players. Serena is who she is partly because of Venus and vice versa. You've noticed how one reacts when one sister is beaten- for better or worse it has an effect. So make no mistakes about it, as tennis players, those two are most definitely connected.

Lastly, some fans think because of their sister connection that it "should" automatically carry over into the fan experience. For some it does, but for a lot of others, including me, it does not.

Great thread.

When I started watching tennis way back in 97 it was cuz of the amazing run that Vee had at the US Open. And when Serena won the US Open in 99 I was very happy yet I felt that it wasn't quite right because seeing Venus sat there - knowing that it should have been her holding that trophy made my stomach turn a little. Nevertheless I was a Williams Sisters fan first and foremost. The sister dynamics was completely restored for me after Venus won the 00 Wimby, as I have always felt that Vee as the older sister HAD to be a little better than Serena.

Come early 02 I became a big Serena fan and sidelined Venus a little as she had a few more slams over Serena. So I was quite pleased when little sis beat Vee at the RG & Wimbly 02. But then Serena started to run away with all the trophies and my loyalties switched sides once more..... I thought that Serena's run and the media hype around her were undermining Vee's accomplishments. So come AO 03 I had turned from a WS fan to a hardcore Vee fan. And that loss was and still is one of my most painful tennis memories. I felt that Vee deserved less spanking by little sis and more respect from everyone. And Serena was ruining the WS party by winning every damn thing and so I started seeing them more as individuals and I had grown to love Vee for her grace, elegance, class and above all her nerdy yet gorgeous introverted personality.

And every since, I've stuck with Vee through thick and thin. But what I have also realised is that as individuals they are very different and this reflects on their fans. Serena only fans tend to be more in your face, extroverts & generally very competitive...a bit like Serena. They are who they are, love 'em or hate 'em - they just don't give a shit and live their lives to the fullest.

Whereas Vee only fans, in my opinion, are more likely to be reflective type of persons, competitive yet will gracefully take a beating:tape:. But they're also quite insecure and will flactuate between grandiose delusions and severe depression. A classic bipolar disorder type cases.

And Williams Sisters fans who cannot choose between the two are somewhere in the middle, the poor souls are confused and might need help in making up their mind!

I do the same with my top faves though (wanting them to avenge the others losses ). I don't see how that's exclusive to the Williamses. You do realise that supporting them as sisters promotes the idea that they are one entity, which I, like you, disagree with.

A big part of who they are individually is who they're sister is  They are perfect complements - they have the same story. So i don't know how you can say as tennis players they are not connected; you are going to have to explain that.

Dave are you telling me if Lindsay had a sister on the tour you wouldn't be drawn to her :hehehe:

They have the same story/background/family and everything, but they are two very different personalities and have two different games. They play different tournaments, say different things. Yes they are connected as sisters, but that is not a reason to support them IMO. It's basically saying that you wouldn't support them if they weren't connected.

There is only one room for one Davenport! It's bad enough her bro-in-law plays ATP  Nah seriously, I would only support her if I liked her game. And even then, I doubt I'd ever be able to support someone on the same level as I do Lindsay, regardless of whether she was her sister or not.

Ah, well put. :) Like you, I don't see the "connection" as a reason to support them because for me, it's saying that if they weren't related, a "WS fan" wouldn't support one/either of them. I accept that they wouldn't be the same people or tennis players if they weren't related (they have grown up with each other and had an effect on each other), but say if Serena had never made it/was never heard of, and it was just Venus, would she have as many fans? Would all these "WS fans" be "Venus only fans"?

I do the same with my top faves though (wanting them to avenge the others losses ). I don't see how that's exclusive to the Williamses. You do realise that supporting them as sisters promotes the idea that they are one entity, which I, like you, disagree with.

First, it's deeper than that. This thread for example. Stef says he had me in mind when creating the thread and that's because he feels that I'm the most loyal WS fan on this board. I will never root against either of them, even when they play each other. I'm just happy both are playing. I have a wonderful day regardless when that happens. I would not feel that way about any other two tennis players, especially if they were not related as sisters. I think I have a special affection for them, because I have a sister that I care very deeply about, who lives with me and who I sometimes travel with and spend a lot of time with.

I disagree that supporting them as sisters promotes the idea of them being one entity. It's stupid for people to think of them as one entity and my support of them as sisters should not be used as an excuse for something so silly. I love them for the individuals they are and for being close sisters who are tennis champions in the same era. It's just the best thing in the world being a tennis fan. To have two ultimate favorites. People who only support one or who only have one ultimate fave, will never know what it feels like if one loses, there's still a reason to be excited about the tournament, because your fave still has a chance to win. I know people have multiple faves, but one is always greater than the other. Not for me.

Very good post!

First off, good post. ;)

That's nice about you relating the WS' sister relationship to your own.

I didn't see it like that, I suppose their great relationship (especially since they are rivals) is a good, extra reason to support them. Although IMO some people see that as the main, and even only reason to support both of them.

People can have two ultimate favourites without them being sisters.
Even people with one main fave who support other players to a smaller degree can still be excited for a tournament when their main fave loses.

I pretend to always have liked Serena but the truth is I started out similar to you. Actually I was a hardcore Steffi fan when Vee and Rena hit the scene. In the very beginning I was all about Vee and Serena equally. Neither one was close to being a favorite, but they were players I rooted on initially. It was during the infamous Indian Wells incident were I fell head over hills in love with Serena. The more the crowd booed, the more fired up she became, and the more I fell in love. I think I pulled away from Venus mostly because I resented them being presented as a package deal. All the presumptions that if you liked one you liked them both started to irritate me. As a result I rebelled against Vee and in my mind turned her into the enemy. Without meaning to it actually enhanced my experience as a fan. Watching their rivalry play out and being decisively behind Serena made me care about each match that much more. Since that time I've softened toward Vee. I cheer her on occasionally and usually root for her provided she's not playing any of my favorites.

This thread for example. Stef says he had me in mind when creating the thread and that's because he feels that I'm the most loyal WS fan on this board.Exactly! You explain your reasons well, but it's just something I've never been able to comprehend. Even as it applies to other sports. I like the Dolphins and the Chargers, but I'm more of a Dolphin fan. Equally confusing to me are people who love to watch tennis but don't honestly have a favorite player. I don't have children but the way I view it is how parents say the love their children equally, although I'm suspect of that too...

Serena only fans tend to be more in your face, extroverts & generally very competitive...a bit like Serena. They are who they are, love 'em or hate 'em - they just don't give a shit and live their lives to the fullest. So if what you're saying is true then you're describing these posters:
bandabou, BlameSerena, Bounty Hunter, brickhousesupporter, danieln1, Diesel, doni1212, donnydarko, Lior., mentos, Miss V.K., Monirena Wiles, moriah, oliviasmith, RenaSlam., Ross., SerenaWFan, shawshank, Sir Stefwhit, spiritedenergy, sweetadri06, tennisviewer, Watching

hmmm... looking at this group of posters and coming up with traits they all have in common I'd say a lot of em' are thoughtful, passionate, and good at expressing themselves. I also see a few loud mouths and one person on my ignore list...

Whereas Vee only fans, in my opinion, are more likely to be reflective type of persons, competitive yet will gracefully take a beating. But they're also quite insecure and will flactuate between grandiose delusions and severe depression. A classic bipolar disorder type cases. So for this group you're talking about: #kArLoS#, Привет, Bayo, Callum, Cat's Pajamas, cn ireland, DA FOREHAND, Junzilla69, KournikovaFan91, LadyLil, MightyMashaFan, MLF, new-york, ninanina19, nynyer, olympus28, Queen_Vee, soomaal, tarrysai, tennismaster8820, Tennisstar86, Uranium, venusallday, VRULES, vw., vwfan

hmmmm.. looking at this group I see really knowledgeable tennis fans, I see a few loud mouths there too. You definitely have some delusional folks there... Maybe a small few I'd label 'reflective' as well.

And Williams Sisters fans who cannot choose between the two are somewhere in the middle, the poor souls are confused and might need help in making up their mind! So then these would be those people according to the latest poll results:
Ackms421, Bartosz, Geisha, gmokb, JavierTennis, manatee, Redsy, rjd1111, spartanfan, Sphenx, Denise 4925

hmmm... yeah, I see some poor souls there... j/k

I'm not saying that they're each other's clones but I do think that there some noticeable traits that each fan group possess. Passionate, yes; Articulate, mostly; Thoughtful and considerate, no.

But besides the tennis knowledge I think that they are less Alpha personality like than Serena only fans. And I think that it is their personality that has drawn them into enjoying the highs & lows of their player. But then you could argue that Venus's inconsistency and greatness might have also shaped them into the bipolar nutcases that they are. :help: I believe in the former. Well, I have to point out the deficiencies in the poll. ;)

first, there's no choice for a 65.8% Serena 34.2% Venus fan like me.

Second, I do sometimes pull for Vee when they play, but simply not this time. There's no choice to reflect that particular nuance.

Third, most of the time when they play(especially in a final), "I could care less who wins. For me, them just meeting each other (again, especially in finals) is victory enough.

fourth. I've never understood the expression "I could care less." Shouldn't it, to convey the idea, be "I COULDN'T care less?" I mean, I need some real clarification on this. I'm losing my mind.

and fifth..., well..., I forgot fifth.

I can't apply it to any other sport either. I'm a die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan and don't watch the Superbowl unless they are playing, so needless to say, I haven't seen a Superbowl in a looooooooooong time. When I lived in Houston though, I was a die-hard Houston Oilers fan and kicked the Cowboys to the curb. When I moved back home, I dropped the Oilers like a hot potato and once again the Cowboys were my only love. I think this is because the Oilers were everywhere and everyone was a fan. Whereas here at home is Cowboy country. Same with basketball, there's only one team for me, the Spurs. Even though I live in Texas, I could never have loved both the Oilers and the Cowboys, nor could I ever love the Spurs, the Mavericks (ugh!) and the Rockets at the same time. So, the WS for me is a unique situation.

As rjd stated, I'm sick and tired of seeing the sisters in same half of draws all the time. So I'm going to root hard for Venus.

It's not Serena's fault that Venus plays like shit for 60% of the year and only really played well @ 4 events last year

For me, I go with who needs it more at that point in time. For instance, the French Open that Serena won, I was rooting for her to win against Venus in the final because Serena hadn't had a GS in what was 2-3 years. At that time, she was a one slam wonder. Now, I root for Venus over Serena because I want her to catch up with Serena in slams plus ranking.

I would usually pick Serena over Venus ( I like both) but since Serena has won everything (the big events) and also #1, she has nothing left to prove besides proving she's still playing as great as ever.
For Venus, she needs more support at the moment. She hasn't been #1 since I don't know when (2001?) and she also hasn't achieve as much as Serena (winning more slams inlcuding the slams she hasn't won i.e. AO and FO and YEC as well). I'd like to see both players end their career one day with comparable(similar) achievements.:D The best sisters in the tennis history ever.:worship:

I hate it when they play! It tears at my soul. When they first started playing I use to feel sorry for Serena cause Venus was winning all the time then it got flipped. After all the wins in GS finals I've supported Venus in their matches. Though I want Venus to win it doesn't make it any easier cause I like Serena just as much.

Venus is my 2nd favourite, but after Serena there is a huge gap. I never root for anybody to beat Serena.

I love both sisters and I usually prefer Serena, but tomorrow is the day when Vee should take what belongs to her. She the best grass court player by far, so it would be fair if she wins :)

WS fan- this time I'm supporting Vee

I always felt a bit sorry for Serena in their earliest meetings when she clearly struggled emotionally against big sis, and wanted her to at least get a win over Vee. I was so happy for her to win the USO '99, where I had hoped they'd meet in the first all-Williams final.

But the sequence of 5 STRAIGHT GS final wins for Ree made me feel really sorry for Vee, and I've mostly wanted her to win to catch up with Serena's awesome stats.

Plus this year, Serena already has a slam, and Vee has more attractive records to get closer to with a win tomorrow than Ree.

So its Venus this year, and at the USO. may the best girl win :).

You know I dont think that there is much chance for Serena. Venus will start beating her bad and immediately I'll switch to being totally for Serena. If they get it to a 3rd I want an epic set, never -ending practically. Then they can do what they want. :)

I want Vee to win her 8Th major, so that she can have more slams than Cheatnin and equal BJK's (Her Idol) Wimbledon Titles count. (Sorry to all the Vee and BJK fans for mentioning Quitnin in the same sentence with them)

:spit: Even typing her name makes my fingers feel filthy and gross.

Wouldnt mind Ree winning it and holding 3/4 slams, but I want Vee to take it. Plus it should have the same effect on Ree come US to take it. I think we could have back to back WS finals, if the draw is kind :)
