I'm so superstitious all of a sudden, that it's best not to say anything, I mean you may have inadvertedly jinxed her to a 3rd round demise :scared: but that's just being OTT, right?:help:

how far did she go last year?

PersephoneDisco
Feb 22nd, 2009, 01:47 PM
She got to R32 according to her activity page on her profile on WTA. And she won the doubles title with Vesnina. But she's not doing doubles anymore, right?
She has to do better, to prove the doubters and to improve her form otherwise........:scared:

2008 duh!
But she still got to the 3rd round lost to Harkleroad:p

Nina.
Feb 22nd, 2009, 02:06 PM
thanks Maz. She definitely needs to get her play together and start playing like last year.
She lost to Harkleroad??? Wow, I didn't remember that she played that bad back then

I'm saying nothing until I watch Dina play her first match..if she plays crap, whether or not the draw is easy is not important.

Dinara Safina returns to the BNP Paribas Open for the sixth year, and tops the field for the first time. The 22-year-old Muscovite made her best event showing in 2006, when she advanced to the quarterfinals (l. to Hingis), but has lost in the third round the past two years. She will play against the winner of Tsvetana Pironkova and Marina Erakovic, and is seeded to meet No. 28 Shuai Peng in the third round. Potential quarterfinal opponents include No. 8 seed Victoria Azarenka and No. 10 seed Marion Bartoli.

Safina is looking to rebound from a loss in her opening match in Dubai a few weeks ago. She began the year with runner-up finishes at Sydney (l. to Dementieva) and the Australian Open (l. to Williams).

I hope Krajan hasn't told Dina that she'll be no.1 if she reaches the final in IW...feck the haters:devil:
I really, really hope that she has made improvements in her game and volleys more! I swear if she volleys once her opponent would be so shocked..;)

her biggest problem was in the last couple tournies, that she had no planB, planC, etc... she did just one thing: hit hard as she can. no rush to the net, no volleys, no dropshots, no moonballs, no whatever.
and we all saw the result.

I don't get why they don't understand and grasp the concept that you can get to no.1 mathematically without a GS...She's already got to 2 slam finals, and she's been on tour for years, it's hardly JJ's story

Yeah, I don't get it either. It's just because they don't like Dina or her tennis and are simply looking for reasons which justify (in their opinion) that she doesn't deserve to be ranked #1 or #2. I mean it's not that the ranking is based on some irrelevant things- it's all about the success a player has or doesn't have. So naturally the most successful player is the number one. And reaching 2 slam finals out of the last 4 grand slams, winning an olympic medal etc. is pretty successful...

I'm sure they will, yes. Despite your warning I took a look into her thread in GM after the match and it is... :tape: :sobbing:

I know, the GM is dark pit of judgement...I realised you can't make everyone happy and that everyone is entitled to their opinion, so if there's two people on opposite sides saying 'she sucks' 'no she doesn't' it won't go anywhere useful so it's best not to venture out there where people live without oxygen..

Us Dina fans have each other and also we have the trump card that is marat, I have yet to meet a woman under the age of 30 that is not attracted to him :p

Well here you do either german, spanish or french during secondary school so you should have a VERY VERY BASIC grasp :D
I did it for 5 years at secondary school but it was very relaxed learning you know, they didn't set out to make you fluent unless you were german :p I only know very little and I'm sure if I went online and did some more, the german would come flooding back.

Yeah, I think one never quite forgets the languages one once started to learn. But it's really hard to remember them if there is no daily need to practice or use them. It's the same with my French. After I heard that I started to wonder what her previous people concerned with fitness were doing with her? Cos I know this is the first time she's had a full time fitness coach to take around the world with her :p

Yep, maybe no one could convince Dina and she just needed the right motivation and the right people to motivate her.

They're watching the match and commentating on it like bbc five live does here.
Well I quickly signed up to the website http://www.radiotennis.com/ but the website is pretty vague but I'm sure that cos she's the top seed her match will be commentated on. The schedule only says Indian Wells  I'm just gonna put it out there so in the next couple of days when Dina next plays, I'll check to see if he is commentating on her match but he should be cos I caught him commentating on Lopez and Nadals doubles match and it was the same stadium as Dina's :)

Hey Maz!
Yeah, I've already read a little bit in GM and got the same impression :(
Well, it's so typical- if a player first starts to have success they are all happy and quite supportive but after a while only the real fans remain. Maybe they see Dina as a threat to their own favourites- what she obviously is...

I don't get why they don't understand and grasp the concept that you can get to no.1 mathematically without a GS...She's already got to 2 slam finals, and she's been on tour for years, it's hardly JJ's story

GM is a weird place. A lot of people seem to care much more about the players they don't like and want them to lose than they care about their fave player and want them to win
And I want to add that the no.1 ranking is not about winning one GS. It's about being the most consistent player of the last 52 weeks. Simple as that.

draw:

(1) Dinara Safina (RUS) - Bye
Marina Erakovic (NZL) vs Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL)
Anne Keothavong (GBR) vs Olga Govortsova (BLR)
(28) Shuai Peng (CHN) - Bye
(24) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) - Bye
Nicole Vaidisova (CZE) vs (WC) Michaella Krajicek (NED)
(WC) Jelena Dokic (AUS) vs Jill Craybas (USA)
(16) Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP) - Bye

her next opponent is Peng ;)
