And if they draw each other in the 3rd round, one of them could STILL win the tournament.

your right... I don't think IW has ever been on of her fave tournaments.

but who knows she'll have had a few weeks rest before the tournament starts and may just be a little fresher than a few of the players.

Its tough to call this year tho... like every tournament so far its going to be a very open and interesting one thats for sure. I personaly can't wait :bounce:

It's between Dementieva and Ivanovic (seriously).

Dementieva will be the most in form player in IW (considering WS don't play) while Ivanovic is starting to get her sh!t together while everyone sucks soooo bad.

MarieC
Feb 20th, 2009, 12:25 AM
I would peg Dementieva or Ivanovic as the favorites for Indian Wells. Safina seems to have been rattled by the pounding she took at the Aussie Open, Jankovic is in a funk, and Zvonareva couldn't capitalize on a wide open half of the draw so who knows how that will affect her. But really who knows what will happen. Kanepi or Razzano are going to be a finalist in Dubai

She was ranked #133 at this time, and she was coming back from an injury who prevented her from playing in 2004.

And just after ..

When Maria loses against a no Williams-player (and before, a no Wiwi-and-Justine), you use her shoulder as a lame excuse... and I am nice because some Sharapova fans actually believe her scoreline to Serena at Aussie Open and Miami in 2007 were due to her shoulder injury more than Serena's great display...

Ivanovic played very, very well against Serena holding true to the form that people play out of their minds(and forms) when playing a Sister. She should feel very good and proud of herself. I would not be surprised to see Indian Wells, a place where she won last year, be the place to see Ivanovic's revival.

Safina will have #1 on the line -- aka, choke. Jelena -- hah.

If not Ivanovic, Sharapova could scratch her way through the draw a la Serena OZ 07 or Miami 04. (If her "shoulder" is healthy, of course.)

Sharapova probably won't play, if she does, it's her 1st tournament since July.
Ivanovic has the pressure of defending champ.
Dinara has the pressure of being near #1.
Jankovic has not looked in form so far this year.
Zvonareva has never won above Tier III.
Kuznetsova hasn't won any tournament in a long time.
That leaves Dementieva as the favorite?

Contenders:

Dementieva - if your name isn't Williams, Dementieva's having the best year on tour.
Mauresmo - she's been playing well all year, and her win in Paris put her back in the top 20 for the first time in a while.
Ivanovic - she played well against Serena in her last 2 matches against her (both losses) and if she gets that serve toss sorted out, she could be dangerous.
Jankovic - not a great year, but  you never know...she could catch someone on a bad day and cash in.
Safina - you never know....
Sharapova - she's the 3rd most confident woman on tour on any given day. She'll be seeded (just barley I think), so she'll only need to win 1 match before she has a potential showdown with a top player, but she's so tough mentally, she could pull it out
Azarenka - her wins in Brisbanse and Memphis were quite impressive, so she could very well pull out her first big win.

Sharapova has to stay healthy or it doesn't matter how good her best matches were.

Unless you count Wimbledon '04, when Maria was an inexperienced 17 year old---and we all know what happened there.

Well I would say Henin at the US Open 2007 is the best anyone has played since Serena's dominance, because I don't think she played as well after the Open or necessarily before it. I agree that her form was simply amazing that tournament. I would say that Serena's AO Final form was certainly as good. But that was only one match. I think Serena and Venus are both getting close to recapturing some of their best form right now, which is exciting. I was particularly impressed with Serena in Paris.

Henin's 2007 is remarkable because she maintained it all year long. But 2007 was arguably a terrible year for Sharapova, and she went toe to toe with Henin at the YEC and demolished her at the AO (which ended Henin's win streak).

For Sharapova, who can re-establish herself as a huge force on the tour.

If you want to pick a single tournament instead of me saying henin07 i'll say:
Henin usopen07 >>>>> Maria AO08.
Watch those matches, that was amazing shape. Henin's greatest shape was usopen07, what she showed in that tournament was just legendary. After that tournament i have to agree with Serena~lover her form declinced, and YET she still won all those tournaments and beat a well playing sharapova(who had a bad year but that doesn't say much about her YEC FORM, which was really good and didn't differ that much from AO-form except for stamina.) with all that she had left in the tank. Henin08 can't be compared to 07 at all.
I have to agree Maria was playing awesome tennis at AO(best in 08 in my oppinion) but saying that was better then henin at usopen, no.

Henin USO '07 >> Pova AO '08.

Another example, the AO '07 final, where Sharapova gets pistolwhipped by Fatrena.

If not for Sharapova's shoulder injuries, she'd have racked up half of the majors the past two years. Dick's kids got really lucky she was hurt.

Why? If Maria was fit what would she have done against Serena? Maybe won 3 games in a set against her instead of the usual 1 or 2???

That's all bullshit. You can't say for sure one major was played at a higher level than another, when both dominated the same field.

Maria is younger than ACHAK and Kirilenko.

I'm not gonna say that about Venus just yet because of the AO blip but this is definetly a good start of the season for her. Not great but she's getting her things together, something she hasn't done in years.(in the first half of the season) Looking forward to the clayseason, will venus have a blip there or finally show she's there to mean business this time.

Serena in Paris looked REALLY sharp, i'd say that's the best anyone played since Pova08. If serena can maintain that form on the clay she could win her second french. I hope Safina loses early at IW so she has a chance to defend her no.1 ranking.

How about the players who frequently have beaten her? Like Kuznetsova, Zvonareva, Safina, or Mauresmo, to name the four that jump to mind in the top 20.

Or how about the young players whom she hasn't played enough to figure out? Like Radwanska, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Cornet, or Cibulkova. IF Sharapova plays, she'd be a dark horse at best.

I simple don't see way how can any player win such big tournament after so big pause (200+ days) like Sharapova has since last august. Justine Henin was absolute master in WTA for great comeback's after long pauses, but even she in famous 2005 or 2007 comebacks has bad result at first tournament after comeback (before really impressive winning strikes). Other Belgian, Clijsters, has career best season in 2005 despite big pause between middle of 2004 and February of 2005 - she won back to back IW and Miami that season, but that is her 2nd and 3rd tournaments that season... in her first event she lose QF match.

For me if Maria finally start to compete next week, she has better chances to win "Serena Williams private tournament" in Miami (Venus will also compete) than her first tournament after comeback in Indian Wells! 200+ days without any competitive match is simple way too long.

I hear ya...no you know what the thing is, when people go start saying like Serena is lucky this, lucky that..Maria is injured, Maria is out of form that..trying to discredit Serena's wins.

I know what you mean, but why do you care? We ALL know Serena already beat a healthy Maria(and easily) just like Maria already beat a healthy Serena(and easily). Whoever says anything different is in denial.

Maria is a good competitor, good champ...but Serena's winning or losing isn't depending of wether or not Maria was there.

Not totally true. Wimbledon final confirms it.;)

 Wimbledon '04 was Maria's finest hour against Serena..beating a healthy Serena, right?

Then '07 oz open was Serena's finest hour against Maria..beating a healthy Maria.

Pova at the AO is the best tennis any of us have seen in years. She annihilated a full draw.

Serena gets pistol whipped by a dizzy Azarenka...

 This is crap and you know it. :)

If not for Sharapova's shoulder injuries, she'd have racked up half of the majors the past two years. Dick's kids got really lucky she was hurt.

This is crap, too, and you know it as well

Injuries or not, Pova has won Slams in 2004, 2006 and 2008. And most likely will win her next one not before 2010. :tape:

Yeah we're OK. When I said, Serena beat a healthy Maria, I was refering to OZ final 2007.

Reading posts in this thread verify to me that Serena versus Maria is a true rivalry. Serena has had the upper hand but age dictates that Maria will eventually gain it. Lets just hope both remain healthy to witness some epic matches.

Actually 5-2 is not a true rivalry but what makes Maria so strong is her two huge wins over Serena in 2004. Nobody has ever beaten Serena in such big finals other than venus.

Agree, 5/2 is a lil bit ownage, but like I always said , to a point near, Serena only lead 4/3. Anyway, I'm waiting others epic matches, OZ SF 2005 for example:drool:

OZ SF 2005. Sharapova should have won, but anyway, I guess this win proves that Serena is better. Right now:devil:

I'd say without Sharapova or WS, Dementieva will win. Safina or Zvonareva are lurking or maybe the Serbian sisters will come into some form as well.
