Vesnina has a very good game (according to her rank). Really deserves a place in the quarterfinal. Next: Jankovic???

She's been classified as an underachiever for the past three or four years, so maybe this could be a breakthrough? ;)

For whatever reason it was all downhill for Domi after holding for 5-0 1st set.

She got up 40-0 on Vesnina's serve at 5-0 1st set but failed to break. Domi was 40-15 at 5-3 1st set but got broken. She was down 15-30 on Vesnina's serve at 5-4 but finally finished the set at 40-30.

By whom?

Maybe not by you, but Vesnina has always shown promise. She reached the 4R in her first slam in 2006 and that year was a real breakthrough. She hasn't been able to deliver the past few years; I don't know the reasons for that though. This season has started out promising though :) I think she's 9-2 for the year :)

That's too bad for Domi. Elena's run now probably ends against Jankovic, but one of her best weeks.

^ i know it doesnt really compare to her single match, but i was watching vesnina playing dubs against danka at the AO and she was pretty imo, if not 'pretty good' than, she was def alright, hit some good shots.

but poor domi :bigcry: she HAD a freaken bagel! well practically anyway :sobbing: i hope she's alright injury-wise n' all

soz for the double post. gotta admit, it was a great effort by vesnina to come back from almost getting bagelled in the 1st set to win the 2nd set quite comfortably, then have a nice lead in the 3rd set before domi retired :(

too bad Dominika. But you'll bounce back.

Congrats Elena. Great year so far. Good luck against Jankovic or Kanepi.

Doesn't surprise me, Elena was stunning in Auckland. When her serve goes in and she can get her baselinestrokes going deep and hard she is very dangerous.

If she keeps playing at this level, she has a shot of beating Jankovic.

Um why you crying?

I was there, it was certainly a memorable match but for the right reasons. Elena and Anne really went for their shots and more often than not they went in :rocker2:

I know what her problem is, she was about to taste defeat.

She's such a sore loser, how many reitrements in losing situations now? What a cow.

Domi had an illness before the tournament and had to go to the hospital.

I like them both but way to go Vesnina :hatoff: she has a pretty game to watch!

I wouldn't call it a break through as she did make the finals of the WTA event in Aukland this year...its just yet another solid result :hearts:

In that case fair enough I suppose, and I apologise for my comment.

It's just that retirement from MP down really irks me.

Can we say Elena V is the surprise player of 2009 so far? Finalist at Auckland and now a quarterfinal appearance as a qualifier at Dubai against a top field

What was it, about 25 degrees?

LenaV :) finally living up to her potential...she has great groundstrokes, a great serve and is very good at the net. She could easily be at least a top 20 fixture. :) This is a very positive result. She basically had the match won so it doesn't matter it was a retirement win. :)

Domi really does have trouble closing out sets though. Leading 5-0 and let it go all the way to 5-4 before breaking. It was the same when she played Aga in Doha last year. Led 5-1 in second set and won in a tiebreak. Against Sveta in, I think, Indian Wells, she led 5-0 second set with set point and ultimately had to break at 5-4. If she had closed the first set out earlier she might have had it done in straights.

A little bit more. But not too severe. Still I think the thing is if you have been very sick the week before you are always going to be much more vunerable to things like heat exhaustion the next week.
