Army of Russian stars join all-star cast at Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships

Five of the World’s top 10 women competing in Dubai hail from Russia -

Dubai, UAE, 2 February 2009: The high number of Russian tennis fans will have plenty to cheer about when the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships gets underway on February 15th.

Australian Open, French Open and Olympic finalist Dinara Safina may be the player to beat in a field that not only includes every top Russian player but every member of the women’s top 10. The 22-year old has made astonishing progress since she was beaten in the second round here 12 months ago, winning titles in Berlin with victories over Justine Henin and Serena Williams, as well as Los Angeles, Montreal and the Tokyo indoor event. This season she has already swept to the final of both events she has played, in Sydney and Melbourne, positioning herself well to claim the number one ranking.

But she faces stiff opposition from fellow Russians Elena Dementieva, Vera Zvonareva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Maria Sharapova. Dementieva has admitted that her victory here last year was the springboard to a sensational season that saw her capture the gold medal at the Olympics, and she followed her Beijing triumph with semi-finals at the US Open, Moscow and the Sony Ericsson Championships, as well as a further title in Luxembourg. This season she began where she left off in 2008 by winning 15 consecutive matches as she claimed back-to-back titles in Auckland and Sydney and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Zvonareva is also in great form, reaching a career-high ranking of five in the world following a fantastic run towards the end of last season that earned her a place at the Sony Ericsson Championships. A title in Guangzhou was followed by a semi-final in Beijing, a quarter-final in Stuttgart, and finals in Moscow, Linz and Doha. This year she continued her run by reaching the Australian Open semi-finals.

Kuznetsova is also accumulating the victories after moving back to Moscow from Spain and linking up with new coach Olga Morozova. She was a finalist in Tokyo and Beijing, and in January she enjoyed a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. Petrova has also proved she can beat the best, with titles last year in Cincinnati and Quebec City, as well as finals in Eastbourne and Stuttgart and a quarter-final at Wimbledon.

Add in the intriguing return of Maria Sharapova, who won the 2008 Australian Open, Doha and Amelia Island in the first half of the year before missing most of the second half with a persistent shoulder injury. That injury also prevented her defending her title in Melbourne, so she will come to Dubai lacking match-practice but fresh and ready for any challenges that come her way.

“The Russians have long made an impact at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, but Elena Dementieva in 2008 was the first to go all the way and win the title,” said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of tournament owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free. “With so many other top players competing as well, it will be interesting to see if the strong Russian presence can result in another title for them.”

It isn’t just the Russian women who will draw the crowds to the Dubai Tennis Stadium. Nikolay Davydenko ended last year as the world number five after reaching the final of Estoril and the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, and claiming titles in Miami, with wins over Dubai champion Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal, as well as Poertschach and Warsaw. This season he was forced to miss the Australian Open with injury after defaulting his second match in Chennai, so like Sharapova he will be raring to go once he gets on court here.

Other Russian men competing in Dubai include 2007 finalist Mikhail Youzhny, Dmitry Tursunov and Igor Andreev.

As well as the Russians, other players bidding for the title include Jelena Jankovic, Serena Williams, Ana Ivanovic, Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Andy Roddick.

Play at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, which is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, begins on February 15th 2009 with the WTA Tour event and continues with the ATP tournament from February 23rd.

bunch of hypocrite all of them.
Peer (and maybe some supporter who persuade her) knew she won't get a visa, but still entered to make "a case".
WTA act the maiden, but they like the doggystyle for some pocketmoney.
And the arabs thinks they can do whatever they want. (okay, obviously yes.)

shame for everyone. i hate when politics are involved to sports. I hated those obama posters and pictures at the Australian open too.

i blame Krajan too. because he/she thinks one brainless tactic solve all the problems. "hit hard as you can", "go for the shots"... yeah, when she can't hit a decent forehand or DTL something it's a total bullshit.
and the serve, geez. worse and worse.

i don't want old Dinara to return:sad:

old dinara was more creative on court , that's why i'm so frustrated about her game. old dinara was playing well, but had no confidence to win the match points.
Now, she plays the same again, again, and again  Ok, she wants to be aggressive, but if it doesn't work... then CHANGE!!!!
i hope krajan is aware of that. and that amélie mauremo will win many matches to prove that varuiety is the key.

yes, she has to go for the shots, but when she's in the ideal position, and for that, you need to construct points.

"She played I think one of her best matches and I was not there," said Safina, who undermined a characteristic selection of winners with 12 double faults. "I didn't give myself the chance to play. It was one of those days today and I'll just have to forget it and get ready for Indian Wells.

"I've been practicing great and was feeling good," added the Russian, who reached the finals of both her previous events this year, at Sydney and the Australian Open. "I guess sometimes it happens, you know. You're feeling good, playing great in practice and you expect to play like that in the match. But sometimes it takes time to transfer your form into the match."

I was expecting her to lose cos of the 'Sveta Effect' and so wasn't that bothered but now cos my day has got shitty, I'm becoming pissed at Krajan's tactics

Razzano is a decent player but not so much that she should lay such a lopsided loss on Dinara....Who must decide,at some point, how committed she really is to being a #1.Champions simply don't lose to Razzano-types so badly unless they're fighting off an unjury...or that opponent plays an absolutely flawless match-of-her-life.It's still early and Dina HAS made 2 finals...so I'm not too pessimistic yet:I'm an Ana fan, too,so I've seen MUCH worse than this

Hmm, I get the feeling she doesn't know how to deal with being so close to no.1, at least when she would lose ranked 13+ she could hide behind the ranking and go on improving but because she's so close to one of her dreams and is stubbornly clinging on to the questionable tactics of her coach, it is a little annoying for her fans to see such a crap performance..:weirdo:

I think she needs to watch a video of her playing matches post Berlin. She hasn't had a lot of good tennis memories in the last couple of months....

It's clear she needs to do something about that serve, you can't win a tennis match if you can't serve and she should try and learn to be diverse and try different shots.

When she serves an ace, the technique is amazing but god 99% of the time when serving, her throwing action is icky and she tosses it so high but then maybe its cos she is of amazonian height :p

I was watching her QF against Dementieva from RG last year, and her toss didn't used to be that high. It's bizarre.

I'm beginning to think that Zeljko is an excellent coach for her psychologically but maybe not so much technically; of course it's true that she's been playing her whole life and doesn't need a whole lot of technical help, but even people with solid technique can go off the rails if they don't constantly get advice about fine-tuning the little things. One day one little thing goes wrong and doesn't get fixed, and, months later, the whole thing is in ruins. I think that's what's happening now; that serve and the forehand just keep getting worse and worse and worse. :help:

She's clinging onto Krajan a little too much. I think cos he made her mind click during her hot streak last year that she just was like omg krajan is the man for me! Despite the fact that her tennis is no better than we've ever seen it. I agree redsonja, don't wanna be the bringer of doom but its ages until IW and I want to know what she's gonna do to fix her slump in form or maybe I don't want to know....if she's gonna come to IW and do the same like she did in Dubai :help:

She's gotta go supervise her construction in Croatia!

In all seriousness, no matter what their bizarre personal relationship is, they're both smart people and experienced tennis professionals, so hopefully sometime in the next three weeks they'll figure out that more of the same is not working. Otherwise... :help:

I feel like somehow she feels that shes indebted to Krajan because he's made her the no.2 in the world that she is and that no matter what, she'll stick with him and say that it's HER fault rather than bad technical advice.

I hope that Marat threatens Krajan but then Im unsure which side Dina will choose!
I hope that its cos there's a mental cloud cos of the AO final and she just needs a week to shrug it off and get a bit more confidence in herself. She's one of those players who needs to start well in a tourney to get the ball rolling and then she'll steam roll to the final (....and subsequently loses)

Yeah, I agree. And maybe if her results dip a little bit she'll get irritated enough to challenge him a little bit more and then they can settle into a student/coach relationship that's a little less, er... codependent. I really think at this point she feels like she owes him so much that she takes what he says as gospel and isn't assertive enough about what her needs actually are (like, help with that forehand :help: )

I wish I thought that was it, but I don't. Although I do think that her lack of quality play (despite her good results to this point of the year, at getting to the final and then losing it, though) is starting to wear down her confidence.

Getting to finals and not winning must be a real downer for Dina cos if she won those finals she would have got what she dreamed of. I hope that she does get irritable and gets pisses off at Krajan and hopefully instead of :hehehe: Krajan agrees and tries out new things with her.

I'm just really worried about her. Of course, I'm a worrier and not at all a natural optimist. :) But things are so amiss... like, there's no way this move to Croatia makes any sense for her, except to keep him as a coach. It makes a lot of sense for him, and I don't think the motives are necessarily sinister-- of course he'd rather be closer to his wife/daughter if he can be (or his wife would prefer for him to be closer to her and the kid :p)-- but none whatsoever for her. It just smacks entirely of her doing whatever she has to do to keep him around, and of course I hope it'll work out just fine, but... :scared:

Yeah, I didn't realise that tennis around Krajans parts were a miss and in need of funding :tape: I don't think she's doing anything to keep him around cos he's the coach of the second best player in the world (who wouldn't want that job and he knows theres still a lot of work to do yet) and they get on like a house on fire (:scared:) Maybe its pratical to keep camp in croatia, I mean its closer to to europe than russia is and shes not going to the east any time soon  I worry for her too cos I get the feeling that SUBCONSCIOUSLY she doesn't want him to go anywhere and that she wants to be as intensively close to her coach 24/7 and I don't think she wants any let up from training etc cos thats the sort of player she is.

Krajan, sort Dinara out! :(

The thing that makes no sense the most is, when are they going to have the most time to spend there? In the off-season, right? And if being in Valencia in the off-season is important because you can train outside even in winter... okay, it is way too cold in Varazdin to train outside in winter (http://www.worldclimate.com/cgi-bin/data.pl?ref=N46E016+1200+0050717G2). I don't think that Croatia is going to take the place of Moscow for her-- she's still going to go to Moscow to see her parents at certain brief intervals, which is pretty much all she does now, so that Croatia is closer to Europe than Moscow I think is completely irrelevant. And she already has two training bases in Europe that she can use year-round-- Valencia and Monte Carlo-- so why is she paying to build another one that she can't use during her biggest chunk of training time, anyway?? I guess the most likely thing is that she'll build some indoor courts too and split her off-season between Croatia and Spain. But to me, spending her own money to build a new training base in a country where she has no support (besides her coaches), doesn't speak the language, and can't effectively use the courts year-round is just... bizarre. And is like the perfect microcosm of all the other facets of her relationship with her coach.

(Hmmm, I think I'd been waiting to vent about that for awhile. )

It's not that cold to me :p Well for a tennis player it is!
Maybe she'll let go of her monte carlo base? I agree she's getting a little generous with her training bases and where will she find the time to train on the courts to justify spending the money on building tennis courts in a 'random' country? I think she will only go to Moscow for family rather than business and she's said in many interviews that she doesn't see her parents as much as she would like to. Unless maybe she uses the courts in croatia for the kids and the tennis developement but thats going out on a limb. I'm as confused as I ever was .
