Poland again huh...
Last year Monica and Sorana knocked them dead. Who knows what will happen this time. Best of luck!!

It looks like Monica has got 1st blood against Kasia Piter. It appears she won by a score of 1-6 6-2 6-0. Slow start but once Monica got in a groove obviously not much Kasia could do about it. :woohoo:

Providing either Sorana can beat Aga or Monica and Sorana can beat the Polish pair I think Romania should not only win this tie but go all the way to getting promoted to the World Group II division. I am pretty optimistic. ;)

What the heck? Sorana? :help:

Her singles form in 2009 has been disasterous, she is 1-3.

Can't believe Sori and Monica got blown out so badly in the doubles. They looked pretty good in Melbourne, definitely not playing this type of tennis. What in the world went wrong? It's sad; I thought this was a great team on paper.

Jan 8th, 2010, 09:05 PM
I like the team :D
If it was up to me, I would've chosen Cirstea, Olaru, and Niculescu for sure! Then I would've decided between Dulgheru and Halep for the last spot. Gallovits wants to play for Hungary so I doubt she'd play, Halep is top 200 and she will be on the team in the future so it would be good for her to get experience and she is in good form, and Dulgheru has no Fed Cup experience and is not a great hard court player ;)
I think Sori will play singles #1 and I think Ralu and Alex will both play singles #2 and doubles will be Monica and Raluca every time :p

thadeuss
Jan 8th, 2010, 09:44 PM
Gallovits refused to play for Romania in 2008 when the team needed her, I doubt she will be called again. If she didn't want to play for Romania which has a better team and after all she's romanian I doubt she'll play for Hungary.
At the moment Dulgheru is better than Halep even on hard court so the choise is the best one..

Maybe she said that after Beijing, when she was not allowed to play for Romania because she refused to play FedCup. But since Ruxandra became president of the federation she said that Gallovits will always be an option for FedCup, so she's not a closed chapter

Thanks for all these pictures first of all. It looks like the girls are having some fun and bonding well. That's good. I hope they are playing some tennis as well.

I must admit when I saw Switzerland in the same group as Romania I wasn't as confident of Romania winning as you are. But having just taken a look at the lineup for the Swiss team, it actually does indeed look quite promising for Romania. Switzerland seem to be without both Bacsinszky and Voegele. That's about as hard a loss for the Swiss as Romania's loss of Sorana and Monica. But unlike Romania, Switzerland have pretty much no depth to compansate. Worth noting that despite the loss of probably their two most important players, Romania is still the only country to field a team made up entirely of players ranked 250 or better. That really does say a great deal about the depth of Romanian tennis at the moment. In contrast Switzerland is basically Patty Schnyder and NO ONE else. Okay their number 2 is ranked 374 but I think Raluca should take care of her very easily. And Patty is coming off surgery so who knows what sort of shape she will be in.

The other two teams don't look terribly tough on paper either although as the host country I'm sure Portugal will be very fired up. Still Romania definately look to have a better chance than I thought they would when I first heard the bad news about Sorana and Monica. Fingers tightly crossed. :)

I suppose there is a possibility Patty Schynder won't be that fit and then Alex might have a good shot to level and maybe they might even take the doubles but the doubles especially is hard to picture as Schynder is world class in doubles whereas Alex is very inexperienced and Raluca while she is improving in doubles is hardly a force.

On the Fed cup official page, the Romanian doubles team has changed: R3 - A.SADIKOVIC / P.SCHNYDER (SUI) v. I.OLARU / S.HALEP (ROU) I hope Raluca will do better in doubles!

Shvedbarilescu
Feb 3rd, 2010, 04:51 PM
Well one has to say that was either very brave or very foolish of Spirlea to take Alexandra out of the doubles after such a great performance in the singles but then again Alexandra isn't known for playing doubles and she might have been tired.

Raluca will obviously carry a lot of pressure on how now and she has to do better here in the doubles than she did in the singles. A lot of pressure also for Simona playing doubles in such an important match. We can only hope, that Patty has run out of gas after that singles match. Romanian do have a great advantage over Switzerland in that they do have options on their side whereas Switzerland can't really deviate from their top two players so I guess this is where that advantage hopefully comes into play....

iPatty
Feb 3rd, 2010, 04:54 PM
Part of me wants Romania to win this tie because it's Simona's Fed Cup debut but of course I will be rooting for Patty. I'm glad Alexandra was able to hang in there and she must have played very well in the third set. After the close fight against Wickmayer and now beating a Top50 player (not sure if she was playing like one, but still), I think it's safe to say that she is slowly finding her footing on hardcourts.

Personally I think Olaru has too much doubles experience relative to the other girls on the team to leave her out of the doubles team. Yeah I'm not saying Raluca is that strong in doubles but compared to the rest of the team she definately has had the best results. Obviously Monica and Sorana are sorely missed when it comes to making doubles selection decisions but that's the way it is, doubles should have been Romania's strongest suit. But with the team as it is I think I would play Raluca in the doubles with Alexandra rather than Simona.

I also would strongly consider trying Simona in the number 2 singles spot after today. Simona had some really nice results indoors late last year beating Bychkova, Krajicek, Bremond and Kerber indoors. And given Raluca's performance today, I think Simona now deserves a chance to show what she can do in singles.

Great win for Simona. Really impressive scoreline in that it shows she must have played her heart out to get the win against a very tough opponent. Ajla Tomljanovic has been zooming up the rankings and this was always going to be a toughy to get through. Very pleased. :)

It's looking like Romania may still have a small chance to get through. Alex needs to beat Martic now obviously and hopefully Romania can win the doubles against Croatia too. Portugal are obviously crap and will be a total formality tomorrow so really providing Romania can finish off Croatia, doable but not guarenteed, it will all come down to Croatia v Switzerland. Switzerland will be the favourites to win but Croatia could be tough in both singles matches and if Croatia could win, Romania just might squeak through. Longshot but let's hope.

I still think Raluca and Alex are Romania's best doubles combo out of the available players and I do wish Irina would try this combo but I'm not the manager.

Does anyone knows if it's still posible for Romania to win this group?

Irina was right today :) Alex and Halep did good job in doubles :) Yeah :)

If Ioana...yep...

I don't think so. Switzerland has 2 wins, and probably they will win tomorrow against Croatia. Maybe if Croatia win, and Romania win 3-0..but i'm not sure ;)

Only theoretical chance. They must beat Portugal 3-0 (winning all three matches in straight sets) and Switzerland must lose 1-2 (winning one match 2-1 and losing other two 0-2). Then points, wins and sets percentages would all be equal between ROU and SUI and it would go to games percentages. Right now, Romania is 83-83 and Switzerland 85-67...

OMG. As chances go this one looks pretty small. But Portugal ain't terribly good and there is no reason why Romania shouldn't be able to win all three matches against them 2-0. And since Petra Martic beat Alex who beat Patty Schynder it is reasonable to think Martic has a good chance at beating Schynder. Ajla Tomljanovic and Amra Sadikovic have both been impressive this tournament but hope Tomljanovic can prevail in that tie. I certainly expect the Swiss to beat the Croats in the doubles but I'm not too confident that the Croats can even take a set.

This whole scenario almost feels tantalizingly possible but then reality taps one on the shoulder to say "nope, something will go wrong.".

Maybe she said that after Beijing, when she was not allowed to play for Romania because she refused to play FedCup.

I found an article, it's about Beijing thing, I think. But I can't understand clearly unfortunately.

the Romanian Federation didn't allow her to play for Romania because she refused FedCup. They said a player can't play at the Olympic Games if he/she dosen't play at least 2 years for the country, but Gallovits said that's not true.
Well I don't know the rules, maybe someone knows about this. Does a player must play FedCup in order to play at the Olympics?

This was the official motive for not allowing her to play at the Olympic Games but the real motive was payback, because she refused to play FedCup that year(she said they called her to late - she already had other plans).

It was stupid what the FRT did and they tried to fix it but it was to late and Gallovits could not play at the Olympics

Does a player must play FedCup in order to play at the Olympics?

"Make him/herself available for selection to represent his/her country in any of the
International Team Championships of the Federation for two of the following
years – 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008 - provided that one of those years is either
2007 or 2008. In 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008, a player who makes him/herself
available for selection for one Tie in Davis Cup or Fed Cup will be deemed to
have fulfilled the requirement for that year."

Edina played FedCup in 2001 and 2003
http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=35011662

So it seems after all that she wasn't eligible to play in Beijing...

Her mother explained why she didn't play FedCup that year.
"Edy explained that she can't be present at FedCup. She wasn't called in time and she already made her schedule. Otherwise, she was available for the Federation , but no one communicated with her. About the Olympics, Edy has learned from her colleagues that the international rules would not allow her to play.

The team was supposed to be Cirstea, Dulgheru, Halep, and Niculescu but now Halep was replaced by Dinu :p. Why Dinu? Why not Olaru, Ungur, E.Bogdan, Gallovits, Begu, etc.? Dinu seems pretty random . I mean she is young and talented, but they could do better with a different player :p

Tennis: Romania participates in a new Fed Cup edition
http://www.agerpres.ro/media/index.php/sport/item/48758--Tenis-Romania-participa-la-o-noua-editie-a-Fed-Cup.html

http://www.agerpres.ro/media/images/2011-01/01271432-954153903.jpg

Ruxandra Dragomir, the Romanian Tennis Federation president, said Thursday in a press conference at the Lotto Shop in the Vitan Mall, that Romania had chance at the FedCup draw.

''We had chance at the draw. Our adversaries, the Netherlands, Hungary and Latvia are strong teams, but we can overcome them. The new drawing system, is with more than a week before the competition, and this will allow the captain, Irina Spirlea, to prepare all the details''said Dragomir.

Romania Fed Cup Team will participate in a new edition of the event, scheduled from February 2 to 5, at the Municipal Tennis Club, Eilat, Israel. Romania will play in Group D, alongside the Netherlands, Hungary and Latvia.

''I want very much to achieve a good result in Israel, and the girls to confirm the good form that showed it in Australia. We have three players in Top100, and this should be visible at the end of the competition. We must fight for a place in the World Group.''

The team that will represent us in the Euro-African Group I is made of Alexandra Dulgheru, Monica Niculescu, Sorana Cirstea and Cristina Dinu.

Irina Spirlea, Romania's team captain, said:''This time I won't promise anything. I want to thank the players who answered the call and I'm confident that all of them will work for the best results. Along with Alexandra, Sorana and Monica, Cristina Dinu will make her debut in the Fed Cup team. We have in our minds to come back home with a result that will fulfill our expectations.''

Alexandra Dulgheru, world number 30 said:''Last year I played for the first time at the Federation Cup and I want to say it was a unique experience for me. It is an honor to be back on this team. Each of us wants to win. Hopefully this year we'll play very well.''

Further, Monica Niculescu, told journalists:''I'm glad that we are truly a team. I hope it will be all good. The confrontation will be very hard, long singles matches, then doubles. We're coming after a tough tour in Australia. Well, I always liked to play Fed Cup, I admire the atmosphere. I do not promise anything, we go there to play our best tennis.''

Sorana Cirstea regrets that he could not attend last year. ''Unfortunately, last year I could not be part of the Fed Cup team, It was very sad. I said that as long as I'm healthy, I'll always be part of the team. All year long, when I go to tournaments, I miss the team spirit. This week, I have the opportunity to be with the players who make a common front. We'll give 100% on court. I hope we'll have a good result''said Cirstea.

FedCup debutant, Cristina Dinu was the most excited:''It is an honor to be on this team, alongside wonderful players. I'm for the first time part of the FedCup team, and for sure, it will be a special experience. I hope we'll qualify. I think it'll be fine.''

The opinion of team chef irina SpÓrlea after that desaster:

"I'm sad. Frankly, I expected. The girls showed good form when playing individually in tournaments, which differs much from their performances playing in a team. The pressure is different from such a competition in teams. Perhaps, their desire to qualify was too much anc caused further damage. We were not able to play! Not that they can't do better, but maybe because they want too much "

Yes, Alex showed some great form recently! :weirdo:

And apart from that, the Fed Cup is of course a tournament where players from one nation are forming a team, but they still have to play in single matches, so...:o

Well that 1st day results really were awful. Like I think all the supporters here of the Romanian players I expected a lot more than that. Frankly, they could hardly have done worse if they tried.

And yet...day two was much better, and day three better still. It rather suggests to me that the team did not prepare as well as they needed too. Arriving in Israel a couple of days earlier could have made all the difference. Then again both Holland and Romania arrived in Israel on Sunday. Still, credit to Holland they absolutely started the event ready to play at the top of their game and Romania sure as hell didn't.

It's bummer, but what's done can't be undone, and at the end of the day at least hopefully Alex and Monica will learn from this and next year they will be ready to be at their best from the start of day 1, and not day 3 as happened this year.

Yeah, at the moment Sorana is the better between them 2. Unless Alexandra will star rocket her way back at the beginning of the year, I can't see her getting nominated for the tournament, unless the doubles competition will have an influence...

However, it's only #4 we are talking about, so that certain player won't have many matches to play. Some countries in their group will probably have not any athlet being ranked higher than the "weakest" player in Romania's team... :spit:

It's even dramatic that they are not already a part of the world group taking into account which trainwreck of ATP team has participated at the Davis Cup world group that year.

Agree. Moni and Alex are my two fav Romanians by a good distance although I do actually like pretty much all the Romanian players. But both of them really did let their country down by missing this event. And I have to say I'm disappointed in them for that.

Had the team for the doubles match between Poland been Monica and Irina or even Alex and Irina I think Romania might be looking forward to a World Group 2 playoff tie right now. That said it certainly wouldn't have been a formality and what's done is done. They really really really REALLY must get out of this division next year though.

Obviously no criticisms to Irina and Simona and Mihaela who all did extremely well under the circumstances. Irina still hasn't really gotten comfortable on hardcourts yet, although I'm sure in time she will, and Simona isn't much of a doubles player at this point in her career, but both girls, as well as Mihaela who did a super job filling in, gave their best to every match.

I don't want to alledge them of faking an injury, but I guess that if they really have wanted to play the could have done it and they are both still IN for their respective tournaments next week, but of course a Fed Cup Tournament in Israel is messing up your schedule and they obviously rated their singles career higher. It's their choice and the consequence is another year in Group II.

Yeah, Simona barely plays doubles on the tour, so if she and Irina were able to grab a set, the new dream doubles team Begulescu would have won that one for sure, but there are no If's allowed in sport.

I know this draw sucked badly to begin with, but I really wonder when they will be able to put up the best squad possible.

I mean it's not about Dinu and Mitu, although the latter seems to develop nicely. There are a lot of girls ranked ahead who couldn't care less this year and even Sorana, although saving us this year hasn't played Fed Cup for ages.

Let's face it. There is no team feeling at all between them, as different as their respective games are, as different are their personalities and even though you won't hear anything directly from the players of course, you can really feel how the rivalries are boiling beneath the surface.

It's good because they push each other like that, but for a team competition like Fed Cup, it's a disaster.

Are you 100% sure ? Cause the rule says :

"- The winners of Pool A and Pool B will be drawn to play-off against the winners of Pool C and Pool D to determine which two nations will advance to the World Group II play-offs in April."

From how I read it , there is a 50% chance that we get the winner of Pool D (where Belarus is) . Or the other option is that 100% we will play the winner of Pool D :bigcry:

That draw already happened today. It's A vs. D and B vs. C.

Elsewhere in Europe/Africa Zone Group I, Great Britain were given a testing draw with hosts Hungary, Romania (arguably the dark horse of this year's event with two players in the Top 25) and Latvia.

From what I understand the lower ranked players go first, so it should be Sorana. See http://itf.uberflip.com/i/245029/1, Appendix A, item 4.

They just posted the schedule on Dolce Sport 1 and apparently Sorana will go on court first in like 40 minutes.
