For someone like me who does not speak Romanian the difference between the i and ī is so subtle... I suppose your ears are attuned to tell the difference, similar to how people who speak Chinese and other tonal languages learn to hear subtle differences in tones that English speakers cannot differentiate.
I could barely even tell Sorana was pronouncing it differently at all at first :o, then eventually I worked out that when the presenter says her name at the beginning (0:02), and the first time Sorana said Cīrstea (0:56) it must be Romanian pronunciation, and the second two times at the very end of the video (1:05 and 1:10) must be pronounced in "English".
All I can tell is that when she pronounces it the Romanian way it seems to be more two syllables with more stress on the first one, Cīr stea, and in the "English" way maybe more three syllables, with more stress on the second syllable, Cir Ste A. That probably isn't important at all though. What I am hearing as "stress" on the first syllable must be a slight vowel difference, but the subtle difference of the ī sound is mostly lost on me... maybe it sounds a little more like a "euh" than the normal English "ih" sound, but I'm not sure, all three times Sorana said it sounded so similar to me.
I would like to be able to say her name properly though . I wonder if the fact that they seemed to spell her name Sorana Carstea (is that a mistake or alternative spelling? Surely a person's name cannot have alternative spellings?) is a clue to the correct pronunciation? Apparently this sound also exists in Estonian but I don't speak that either...
And she really is very happy for someone who is injured isn't she? :tape: Like oh hey I'm injured :D, oh it's funny , there's no rush, don't worry, it will get better, time for a nice Xmas break ;). At least she is thinking positively.

You are very right in your conclusions. As far as the correct spelling, it is Cīrstea, not Cārstea, although the ā and the ī sound the same, but they are different letters. I bet that is hard for a foreign person to understand. But the ī is an old form of the ā, which only appeared after 1989, and obviously her name is older than that. Hope my explanation helps.
I personally think she looks happy because she is always so bubbly and laughs and smiles so much. She is positive and takes the best out of every situation. So why not be happy because she now gets to spend time watching TV all day and rest? Even I would be happy because of that, not to mention her, who is always busy, always tired and always on the road.

I don't speak Romanian, but to my ears the "ī" in Cīrstea sounds pretty similar to the Russian letter ы (a sound which has no English equivalent, but is (somewhat arbitrarily) usually written as "y" in Latin transcripts of Russian. Hence, Мыскина becomes Myskina).
Anyway, I wish Sorana a full recovery during the off-season and a strong start to 2010!

There is ī/ā in some english dialects... " ī/ā is like e in roses in some English (for example: Birmingham) dialects. Closest approximation is the first vowel in the dipthong, in a very strong Birmingham (UK) accent, in the words "rEad" or "rEed" "
Hope my explanation helps.
the ā verson is the old one, the ī one is a communist version...
Ī versus Ā
The letters ī and ā are phonetically and functionally identical. The reason for using both of them is historical, denoting the language's Latin origin, although statistically only few of the words written today with ā actually derive from Latin words having an a in the corresponding position. In 1953, during the communist regime, the Romanian Academy eliminated the letter ā, replacing it with ī everywhere, including, until 1964, the name of the country, which was spelled Romīnia. The first stipulation coincided with the official designation of the country as a People's Republic, which meant that its full title was Republica Populară Romīnă, whereas the Socialist Republic proclaimed in 1965 is associated with the spelling Republica Socialistă Romānia.
After the fall of the Ceauşescu regime, the Romanian Academy decided to reintroduce ā from 1993 onward, in accordance to the 1904 spelling reform, thus cancelling the effects of the 1953 spelling reform. The choice between ī and ā is thus based on a simple rule: the letter is always spelled as ā, except at the beginning and the end of words, where ī is used instead. Exceptions include proper nouns where the usage of the letters is frozen, whichever it may be, and compound words, whose components are each separately subjected to the rule above, not the resulting word itself (e.g. ne+īndemānatic → neīndemānatic, not *neāndemānatic).
Quite a number of people prefer the simpler 1964 norm. Most publications that continued to use the old spelling norm have switched to the 1993 norm, but a few, such as Dilema Veche, still use the older norm. Some publications, such as Romānia literară, magazine of the Writers' Union of Romania, and publishing houses such as Polirom allow authors to choose either spelling norm. Dictionaries, grammars and other linguistic works have also been published using the ī and sīnt long after the 1993 reform.

Well it's winter in Romania this time of year. There is sun but has no effect because is very cold outside. We call it "soare cu dinti" (sun with teeth) because it's deceiving...

She talks about her injury and about fines in tennis.
She reads sport newspapers!
"I read very often sport newspapers. My dad buys them every day. Being injured I stay home and read newspapers. I know that Rapid made equal to Pandurii, Dinamo beat Alba Iulia and Steaua beat Vaslui"
She dosen't have a favorite team!
"I have no favorite football team. I can not follow them, I don't have time. I have some friends in tennis. We go to a movie, in a theme park, or out to eat in town. I know Tamas,I saw him on TV. There are not so many scandals in tennis (like in football)! "
Wozniacki, best friend!
"I get along very well with Caroline Wozniacki. We play together in doubles. I rooted for Fernando Verdasco at the Champions Tour. We belong to the same team. I have been loyal and I rooted for my team, the team that provides us with sport equipment. My no. 1 priority is tennis.
I don't have time for anything else. I don't receive calls from boys. Usually I close the phone:) (she dosen't have a boyfriend)
With Serena Williams I don't have any relationship, we don't even say hi. I do not know how she is in private life.
"Sania Mirza is an idol in India!"
In India, for example, Sania Mirza is a true idol. The Indians are desperate to see her, they come to her tournaments. She is very popular there. I'm friend with Sania Mirza. I even gave the equipment in a tournamant. She told me that she can't accept it, because in the next round we might play against each other. Eventually she accepted.
"I started tennis because of Steffi Graf!"
"It is true that I started tennis because of Steffi Graf. I had the honor to train with her and Andre Agassi. They are some extraordinary people. I have a great admiration for them.
I practiced with Steffi Graf in America after the first day she came to tell me if I want to play with her the next day. It seemed to me an incredible gesture to asked me if I want to play with her. She's an extraordinary woman. I'd like to read Agassi's autobiographical book. I respect him enormously "
About Nadal and Federer!
"I can not say I like a particular player. I can only say that Federer and Nadal are examples outside the tennis court. They say hi to everyone, are full of respect for everyone. They are examples"
"I do not know if there are parties where the tennis players take drugs. I know the italian Flavia Penneta who made these statements. But I know nothing. Penneta is in the circuit for many years. She is 27 years old. I am still young, "says Sorana Carstea to Sport.ro

in the 1st part they talk about Serena's incident from USO and about 'the bump' between Irina Sparlea and venus Williams from the 1997 USo semi-final after which Mr. Williams called Irina a big, tall, white turkey [link (http://www.nydailynews.com/archives/sports/1997/11/14/1997-11-14_spirlea_stays_on_bumpy_road_.html)]. They asked her what would happen if she would call Serena a big black turkey. She said she's a peaceful person and it's not in her character to say such things. Then they talk about the Baccalaureate exem and about her (school) plans for the future. Then they talk with Ruxandra Dragomir (on the phone) about Sorana's chances to get in Top10.
In part2 the reporter asks Ruxandra if she (Sorana) has the support of the Ro. Federation (Ruxandra is the pres. of the Federation), because many tennis players felt they are not helped by the federation. Sorana said she didn't have the support of the federation until Ruxandra became president, but she had her parents support and now she's is in a position in which she dosen't need any help from the fed. But she's confident that Ruxandra will everything she can to support the players and that many things started to change in better.
Then they talk about how Sania Mirza is an idol in India and how at her match at Wimbledon the stands where full with Indians, and only 3 Romanians (her mother, her agent and a sponsor).
Dragomir said shes talking to Iraina Sparlea about her to became the captain of the FedCup.

Ruxandra: " I'm convinced that Sorana will reach where she wants, because like I said many time she has that special 'package' of a professional player, and she knows that and she will work hard to be there...
Reporter: a package? you mean a beg where you put all your stuff..?
Ruxandra: No (laughing), I mean all the good things a tennis player can learn. That's the special package that you need to have it in order to reach up there. It's not enough to work hard it's not enough to wish it if you don't have that special thing and Sorana has it, she has very clean shots, she has the perfect hight for a top player... she has that special thing like I said.."
Wow, even though I can't understand her, it's obvious that she is very fluent and confident. For those of you who understand what she is saying, is her Spanish better than her English? Her English is quite good, but (to my untrained ear) her Spanish seems like it might be even better.

After two years of studying, I don’t speak fluently as she is.. Not even close
Hard to believe she learn to speak like that just from watching tv
That's really impressive..
HowardH,
I don’t know if her Spanish is better than her English
But it does sound like she speaks Spanish faster with more confidence

For a Romanian is very easy to learn spanish because the languagese are very similar, I know many girls who learned spanish by watching latin american telenovelas ;) I never learned spanish but I understaned around 80% of what Sorana is saying...

I understand Spanish pretty good, and i dont understand a word in Romanian
so i don't really find some similarity between the languages
and of course there's a big difference between understanding the language, and speak the language
and she sounds very impressive in Spanish... Suits her ;)
I dont know why but Romanian language always reminds me of the Russian language

Romanian language is not known that's why is hard for you to understand anything. I beleive spanish is the 2nd most known language in the world, everyday we hear it, so many words are known even if we don't speak the language
here's a romanian song (with lyrics) don't tell is not close to spanish (maybe to italian is closer)... we are in E.E. but we're not slavs.

Welcome dear Boom Sport viewers. Next week will be an important tournament - Andalucia Open, where we'll have 3 romanians: Sorana Cirstea, Alexandra Dulgheru and Raluca Olaru.
We're now with Sorana Cirstea. Hello Sorana, you'll have a hard tournament, last year you reached the semis, how it will be this year?
Sorana: Yes, It's a hard tournament because there are many Top20 players, but for me is a pleasure to play at Marbella because last year I played the samis, I played very well and I felt very good there. I have many many beautiful mamories so I can't wait... I hope to repeat last year's good result.
Reporter: Last year in 1R you played against Raluca Olaru, you def. her. How it will be your relation with her this year? This year she was def. by Alexandra Dulgheru at Miami. You hope not to meet her again?
Sorana: Yeah, It's not very nice the moment when you meet another romanian player, because we're not so many, we wish one another to reach higher, and in the moment when we play against eachother, normaly, one will be elimineted. But this is how it is in tennis, you have no power over the draws and you can draw anybody. I always try not to watch whos on the other side of the net, because in that moment the feelings appear: she's my fried and so on... so no.. I try to concentrate only on my game, and not to think whos on the other side. Ofcourse I hope not to draw a romanian, but if I draw that's it..
Reporter: Btw. you already have an experience with Caroline Wozniacki, lately you meet her very often.
Sorana: Yeah, I already said that when I have a very close friend, I start to play against her very very often.. and I don't know maybe is the destiny. With Caroline I haven't played since we were 14 years old, and lest year we played 3 times against eachothers, but this is how it is in tennis, in the moment when you start to play well and reach the top, you will meet almost the same players so it's normal to meet them more often
Reporter: Andalucia Open had grown this year, more top50 players.. from top100. How do you see this year's tournament?
Sorana: Personaly I'm happy because this tournament is extraordinary, from my point of view is one of the best from the circuit... and there are many players like Azarenka, Pennetta, Dulko, Serena Williams just pulled out but there are many good player and I belive this helps, I always get more motiveted when there's challenge.
Reporter: There's a large romanian community in Spain. Do you expect a big support there?
Sorana: Yes, but not so much in Marbella but in Barcelona, because next tournament will be in Barcelona, there I've meet many romanians. I'm happy beacuse from my point of view is different when you have romanians who cheer for you and in fact it is a privilege and an honour. At Marbella there weren't so many but I hope this year will come more.
Reporter: You choosed the clay this weeks. You try to play more on clay?
Sorana: The clay season just started, to be honest even if I want to play on hard I can't, because Miami was the last hard tournament and now I started the european tournaments and until Wimbledon everything will be on clay, a thing that makes me happy because... I was just talking to my coach and I said that I like very much to play on hard, on grass but on clay I had the best results. So i hope to repeat the tradition this year too.
Reporter: How come you came these days in Romania insted of going to Paris at Mouratoglou Academy?
Sorana: I'm very very close to my family, and in general I'm close to my home. I was gone for 6 weeks and this was my record, I've never been away from home so much time, and I realy felt the need... always when I feel the need to come home I come. But I can say that I recharged my batteries while being here, and now I can go with new straght and I'm very happy to be able to came home.
Reporter: On 7 April is your bithday. How will you celebrate at Andalucia Open?
Sorana: To be honest I'm happy to spend by birthday there, because last year I had many beautiful memories. They made me a suprise, before strating the doubles match they came with the cake in the court. They had posters everywhere whishing me happy birthday so everybody knew that was my birthday... and they came and congratulated me. It was beautiful, and I hope this year they will do the same but the simple fact that I'm there... and I hope to play well fom my birthday, I think this will be the biggest present.
Reporter: What's your goal for next week?
Sorana: I try not to think so much at the objectiv, I'll just try to concentrate on my game, I have a new coach, we'll start from this Friday, and I hope the things will go well
Reporter: I have 3 food specialities from Marbella for you. Pescado frito, ajoblanco and roscos de vino, which one would you choose? fried fish, a soup with vegetables and meat and donuts with wine
Sorana: To be honest I'd choose the donuts, but because I'm still a sportwomen, probably the fish.
I'm Sorana Cirstea, watch me at Andalucia Open on Boom Sport.
