I hope Russia wins easily and Sveta her or hers matches.Do you think there's a chance she'll play the doubles or only singles? Anyway looking forward to see her perform well in front of her homecrowd :bounce: I wish I could go watch this tie :sobbing: Must be an amazing atmosphere to cheer for the russian team in Russia :D

Not that many days of waiting Mel (we've waited longer) :p She has time to go back to Russia and adapt to the very different conditions there from Australia and different times and all that.

Yes,Sveta defeated her 6-4 6-2 at the time. There are some important chinese players missing from the team (Na Li,Shuai Peng) so the russians have not an excuse not to win :p

Russia rules the Fed Cup roost

No matter where you turn in the women’s game today you’re apt to find a Russian woman ruling the day.

Just take a look at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year. Down to the nitty-gritty of the event, only Serena Williams spoiled the symmetry of an all-Russian semifinal line-up. Williams rebounded from a first-set quarterfinal loss to ship Svetlana Kuznetsova back to Moscow. But the rest of the final four were rounded at by Elena Dementieva, Dinara Safina and Vera Zvonareva.

So, it certainly comes as no surprise that when it comes to Fed Cup the team to beat is the team from Russia.

It’s been that way for quite a while now – the Russians took the Fed Cup home four of the last five years, only missing out on the trophy in 2006. There’s a simple formula to the Russian success: An incredible wealth of talent to pool from and each and every player cherishes the opportunity to participate.

At the moment, five of the top 10 players in the world hail from Russia – Safina, Dementieva, Zvonareva, Kuznetsova, and Maria Sharapova. Take your pick, but whichever players Russian Fed Cup Captain Shamil Tarpishev selects to play on any particular squad, they’ll capably bond together for the common cause of a winning performance.

For the upcoming 2009 first round against China P.R., Tarpishev is fielding a team with Dementieva, Kuznetsova, Anna Chakvetadze and Alisa Kleybanova. At the Australian Open, Dementieva and Kuznetsova addressed the importance of playing Fed Cup, a philosophy which clearly leads to the Russians consistently rallying to success.

Dementieva said: “We just have a very good team spirit, I guess. It’s really amazing. It’s such a tough competition between all of us when it comes to the Fed Cup. We can feel and we can play as a team. I think that’s a lot to do with our captain, Shamil, the way he creates the atmosphere during the Fed Cup competition. Sometimes it’s really hard for him because every single player is thinking that she is the best one and she’s the leader of the team. But, somehow, he can organize everything and everyone feels good when we play together.”

Kuznetsova said: “We have so many players and I like that we can switch players, especially because the Fed Cup schedule is so hard. I think this year we are going to switch players around. There are good teams out there, but our girls always agree to play so that’s why we are first. For me, it is the best competition because I like to play on a team, it’s so much fun. It’s like a group and in tennis, you are always by yourself. When you play as a team, especially when we play at home, it’s the best atmosphere and I love being there.”

Although not nominated to the first-round team, Zvonareva broached the subject of whether the Russians are invincible.

“There is no one unbeatable but we definitely feel like a strong team,” Zvonareva said. “We definitely feel like a strong team because we support each other very well. And all of us, we can all play singles and doubles. It makes it very exciting for all of us to practice with each other. Fed Cup is a place we can get together and feel like a team because we’re all on the same schedule, which is very nice. Every country is tough and it depends on who is playing. When the Williams sisters are playing, it’s hard to beat them. When other countries get together, like Ivanovic and Jankovic, it will be tough, but I still think we can make a win.”

While the Russians delight in their dominance, the rest of the nations playing Fed Cup admit to admiring as well as sometimes fearing the Fed Cup powerhouse.

“You need your “A” team,” said U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez, when asked how you challenge the defending champions. “There a team that has so much depth, I think they have four or five players in the top 10. They have so many choices that depending upon who the other team plays they can alter who they’re going to play, which is so nice for them. We played them in Moscow last year and it was closer than we thought and we didn’t have our “A” team. They’re the dominant country at the moment – they’ve got the top ranked players.”

Fernandez firmly believes that Russia’s current stronghold over the Fed Cup is a positive as opposed to a negative for the competition. She cites the fact that the United States once owned the competition, winning the title 17 times, although their last success was in 2000, as proof that domination can translate to motivation.

“I think it’s good,” Fernandez said. “When you have someone ahead of the game like that it makes you want to improve, it makes you want to get better and strive to pull off the upset. The U.S. had that position for an awfully long time and look what happened; other countries got better. It might take time but, hopefully, we’ll get the Cup back.”

New French Fed Cup captain Nicolas Escude knows that a possible semifinal outing against Russia would be his country’s fate if they beat Italy in the first round. “Russia has the best team because they have the best players in the world,” Escude said. “They won the last few years so they’re the best team at the moment. But no one is unbeatable.”

Clearly, the Serbians with Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic anchoring their team can be considered a strong contender for eventual Fed Cup honors. For now, however, the duo has to play Serbia out of the World Group II to World Group I. But that seems a plausible likelihood.

Questioned about the Russian invasion of the Fed Cup, Ivanovic chose to discuss the merits of Serbia becoming a viable squad to one day dethrone Russia.

“I think we have a very good team,” Ivanovic said. I think we have a very good possibility to win the Fed Cup. There are a lot of good players and teams out there. But we have to, again, work our way through the World Group to even be in a chance to play against them. Hopefully, we can take it away from them.”

Fed Cup: preparation of the Russian team for the tie is according to a plan

Russian ladies’ team keeps preparing for the first round tie of the Fed Cup Russia v China, which will be held on February 7-8 at the sports complex “Olympiisky”.

Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anna Chakvetadze, Elena Vesnina and Alisa Kleybanova have been training today. The captain of the Russian team Shamil Tarpishev and team coaches Andrey Olhovsky, Larisa Savchenko have been assisting them on the court.

As Andrey Olkhovsky said, the preparation for the tie is going well. “At the moment all the tennis players officially stated for the tie are training on the courts, - said Olkhovsky. - All of them participated in the Australian Open and one of the main issues now is their acclimatization while changing different time zones. Luckily, all the players are in good shape and keep training. “

The Chinese team is expected to arrive today. Tomorrow they will start their first trainings at “Olympiysky”.
The official press-conference of both teams will be held on Wednesday at 14:00 at the press-center of the tie

I'm hoping Anna C. wins her matches. I don't know her or like her as much as the other Russians, but she hasn't been the same player or person since being robbed during the 2007 off-season. I can see it in her eyes. A good Fed Cup series would really help her confidence.

translation of the audio interview:

-Svetlana,Russia plays against China. Is it a difficult match?
-Yes,we are playing against them next week in Moscow and this match is very important and it will be difficult there.

-Is it difficult to play for Russia since there are many russian players who can play for national team?
-Yes,but not all of them always want to play, and on the contrary we are very happy because we don't always have to play and you can share with other players.

-What do you remember of the 2 finals you played in Fed Cup?
- I think I've played 3 finals, but I did it much better in the last 2 because in the first one I played very bad as I was very nervous but in the end I feel more confortable.

Not a long interview and I can tell you Diogenovna about what you asked that Sveta speaks a much better spanish than the interviewer ;)

Anne,I think tomorrow (friday) we'll get to know the players who'll play and who'll play on each day.Chances are Sveta is playing if she's feeling ok.I mean Chakvetadze is not in good form for a while now and it might be a bit too risky to make Kleybanova debut on the first day so I'm think Elena and Sveta will play first day,but what do I know? Let's wait tomorrow and see what Tarpishev has decided

oh ok look what I just read here:

http://www.fc.tennis-russia.ru/db/news/138

Viktor Yanchuk: we can test our young players in the match Russia vs. China

Merited Russian coach Victor Yanchuk who was the head of the Russian ladies’ team for the Fed Cup in 1990s, is quite optimistic about the Russian players performance in the Fed Cup 1st round tie Russia vs. China.

“I guess the match would be not a very tough one for our tennis players, - he said in his interview to FTR press-service. - Frankly speaking Chinese players have very little chances to win.
I think there is a sense in testing our young players. Alisa Kleybanova could be №2 player of our team. She is quite a qualified tennis player and could have good chances in the match against Chinese competitors. Anyway it would be a very useful experience for her and for the team. But undoubtedly it should be the coach to make decisions. When speaking about Chinese players and tennis players in common, one should mention first of all, that they play with great commitment on the court. They all are very tenacious, assertive, and they fight till the end. I would say Chinese are special people; they do everything to succeed. Traditionally Chinese players have strong doubles. And we should not forget that Tiantian Sun is an Olympic champion in doubles. But I think doubles won’t play a decisive role in this match.”

The Draw ceremony will take place tomorrow at 13:00 at the Central court.

Анна
Feb 5th, 2009, 07:21 PM
Thanks, Vero; I wish I had your patience to find things like that ;). I guess we'll have to wait for their coach tomorrow, though.

Makes me feel a bit sad, though, to see the team. Tarpischev looks so much like my father, who was anything but Russian :sad:.

Russia out and out favourites

There were no surprises from Russia's (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/team.asp?team=RUS) captain, Shamil Tarpishchev, as he picked his two strongest singles players, Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova, for the defending champions first round tie with China (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/team.asp?team=CHN), as Russia start their bid for what would be a 5th Fed Cup by BNP Paribas crown in 6 years.

The full draw made on site at the Olympisky Stadium in Moscow, is as follows:

Saturday
Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=35013668) (RUS) v Zi Yan (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100012797) (CHN)
Elena Dementieva (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=20008434) (RUS) v Shuai Zhang (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100035555) (CHN)

Sunday
Elena Dementieva (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=20008434) (RUS) v Shuai Zhang (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100035555) (CHN)
Svetlana Kuznetsova (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=35013668) (RUS) v Zi Yan (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100012797) (CHN)
Anna Chakvetadze (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100013778)/Alisa Kleybanova (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100026774) (RUS) v Tian Tian Sun (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=20013057)/Zi Yan (http://www.fedcup.com/teams/player.asp?player=100012797) (CHN)

Such is the talent at Shamil Tarpishchev’s disposal, he was able to name his side for the tie with China before the start of the New Year, while the Russian Fed Cup captain was able to rest Dinara Safina who reached the final of last months Australian Open, and Vera Zvonareva who made the semis in Melbourne.

Such a luxury was not afforded his opposite number, Qi Zhang who was hit by injury and withdrawals of 3 top 40 players, meaning the Chinese flew into the Russian capital with only 3 fit players. While the
visitors only started training in Moscow on Wednesday evening, as they arrived late because of the Chinese New Year.

Yan Zi, who is China’s top ranked player at 119 in the world, will be first up for the visitors, facing Svetlana Kuznetsova, who’s over 100 places above her in the rankings. With China’s other two players, Zhang Shuai and Sun Tian Tian raked below 270, this could be the Chinese’s best chance of victory, but Zi, who says she’s had a good start to the new season, says the pressure won’t get to her.

“I don’t think I’m under much pressure because the Russian team has so many good players, while their world rankings are so much higher, so I’ll just go out and play.”

The second match of Saturday’s opening singles certainly won’t be any easier for the visitors. Zhang Shaui, ranked 273 in the world will go up against Elena Dementieva, who’s only lost one match, against Serena Williams in the semi-final of the Australian Open, in 2009. There may be a massive ranking gap between the two, but the Russian, who mentioned Shuai used to be a good junior player, isn’t underestimating her opponent.

“Playing in the Fed Cup is a very special event, so you always feel under a little bit more pressure, and I’ll just be trying to focus on my game and do what I need to do on the court.”

The two countries have met just once before in the Fed Cup by BNP Parisbas, in 2002. On that occasion Russia ran out 5-0 winners in Beijing, and given the talent of the home side, it’s quite conceivable
they can record another whitewash. China’s captain, Qi Zhang recognises his team is a massive underdog for the tie, but he still has some cause for optimism, saying:

“Everything is possible”.

Russia cruise 2-0 ahead

Russia have moved into a 2-0 lead in their first round Fed Cup by BNP Paribas tie, after opening day singles victories for Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva.

Kuznetsova was first up against Yan Zi and the World No. 7 raced out of the blocks to move into a 4-0 lead after just a quarter of an hour played. Yan Zi, the world No. 119, and China’s top ranked player in the tie, did have a few chances, especially in the 4th game of the first set, where she had 4 break point opportunities, but a total of 15 unforced error’s in the opener alone, let her down, as Kuznetsova easily served out, showing immense power from the baseline, to take it 62 in just 27 minutes.

The second set saw an improved performance from Yan Zi, as she managed to hold serve early on, helped in part by a massive reduction in the number of unforced errors committed, and an improved first serve.
Frustration was creeping into Kuznetsova’s game and so were the mistakes. Yan Zi managed to get to 0-40 in the 4th game, but this time the world No. 119 didn’t miss another golden opportunity, and would then hold serve to go 4-1 up, and for the first time in the match put Kuznetsova under pressure.

That was just the wake up call the world No.7 needed, first fending off 4 break points on her own serve, which Yan Zi agreed was the turning point in the match.

It was all Kuznetsova from there, as the Russian won four consecutive games to wrap up a 62 64 victory in just under an hour and 15 minutes and put Russia 1-0 up in the tie.

Kuznetsova draws first blood for Russia

MOSCOW (AFP) — World number seven Svetlana Kuznetsova put reigning champions Russia 1-0 up in their Fed Cup opening-round tie with China here Saturday, beating Yan Zi in straight sets here on Saturday.
Kuznetsova won 6-2, 6-4 in one hour 12 minutes in what was her first head-to head meeting with Yan, who is currently 119th in WTA rankings.
"I lost concentration at the start of the second set, while Yan got accustomed to my style after the first set," Kuznetsova said after the match.
"She made me feel a bit nervous but luckily I managed to find my game again."
"It was a bit difficult to breathe here in Moscow after the hot Australian weather but little by little I got accustomed to the conditions and now feel pretty well here."
Kuznetsova started the tie with a couple of immediate breaks to gain a commanding 4-0 lead before Yan chalked up her first point in the match.
After winning the opening set in 27 minutes, the 2004 US Open champion suddenly lost her nerve allowing her Chinese opponents to break in the fourth game for a 4-1 lead.
But Russia's 23-year-old Monte Carlo resident restablished her command and won five consecutive games to take the set and the match.
