After winning her second round match at the junior aussie open i think its about time heather deserves her own thread. She won her first grade 1 title in 2008 at Yucatan, Mexico and reached the final of the prestigous eddie herr junior tournament.:) Good luck against Miyabi Inoue heather :D:D

Well Heather won, 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-4, so big congratulations to her for really griding out a tough won in what must have been horrendous conditions (it reached 44 degrees, so it was probably over 50 actually on the court).

It will be tough for Heather in the next round as she is bound to be feeling the effects of this match and she is up against a top seed.

Well played Heather, great battling win.

Gonna be really tough against Pervak but whatever happens its been an excellent run.

(Hopefully it won't be too embarrassing for some of the earlier posters on the board.) ;)

i saw her play at eastbourne last year. she had a nice forehand but it was hard to say how she played because it was so windy and they were basically rolling in the serves (she played coco vandeweghe who has a great serve yet her serve looked slower then heathers)

According to her Dad, Heather's first senior tournament will be at Clearwater in Florida in March, (see 4 mins into the interview on the following link).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/7857978.stm

Looking at the ITF website, the only tournament taking place in Clearwater, Florida is a $50,000 event that starts in February. It that's the one it's quite a big tournament to start your senior career at.

I'm guessing she will recieve a WC / QWC being a Bolitary girl, as its unlikely that an unranked player would gain direct acceptance in a $50k. Nice interview, its good to hear that she thrives on the big stage and doesn't get (too) nervous

Dawson.
Feb 8th, 2009, 01:38 PM
Heather is 219th alternate at $50k Clearwater starting 23rd Feb. So even though withdrawals are inevitable, the chances of her playing this event without a wildcard are pretty much zero. Hopefully she'll get one in qualifying.

Well she's now 166th in line :rocker2:  53 players pulling out in 4 days, lets be hopeful

Shes also down to play $25k Fort walton beach the week after, but its a similar situation. She's currently 180th alternate.

Lets hope she has some sort of wild card agreement sorted out ;)

Yeah shes not in the qualifying draw, but only 3 wildcards have been dished out for the MD as of yet, 1 more to go. But yeah it's highly doubtful she'll get one!

I think she needs to be a bit more realistic in her scheduling. Maybe start off in some weak $10k's or ask for wildcards in British $25k's

Yes i read an article (think it was in the local Guernsey newspaper) that her parents/team were surprised at the number of entrants. They thought she would get into qualies. But thats a bit odd as its incredibly unlikely you'll get into $50K qualies with no ranking...

$10K or possibly a weak/British $25K would be a better bet. It did also say it now looks like her pro debut will be in Jersey (which is a $25K i think...)

Yes i read an article (think it was in the local Guernsey newspaper) that her parents/team were surprised at the number of entrants. They thought she would get into qualies.

It sounds as though her parents and team need to talk to some people who are more knowledgeable about these things. That would be a better use of everyone's time than to enter Heather for events for which she has no chance of playing in the qualifying.

Doesn't she got to Bollteri? Surely that there are people there with a wealth of knowledge on such matters. Maybe they got a bit ambitious since Laura got a WC into a Tier III.

Dawson.
Mar 1st, 2009, 02:30 PM
Heather is on the $10k Bath list starting 16/3/09 - currently the 99th alt. Definately a more realistic place to make her debut - then the following week a wild card in $25k Jersey looks pretty secure

Heather has NOT received a wild card in MD or Qualifying for $10k Bath - but is only 4 places away from qualifying, so she will probably get in. I think they may have offered a wild card, but she may have turned it down, wanting to save them for the bigger events. Smart choice if it's true. Good luck Heather (if you play )

I don't think it's hating, I think it's just being realistic - my comments in particular (or at least thats how they were meant to come across). My 'wake up call' comment was refering to Heather believing her debut event to be $50k Clearwater, which was a totally unrealistic expectation. There's a huge gap between $10ks and $50ks and I think Heather may have expected herself to win. Hopefully this loss will only fire her up and motivate her to become the best player she can be

Hi I think that you should all support her, If she want to play at clearwater then she should, if she have to confident to play their then it's all up to her and not you. She is out their trying and she don't need to be pull down but her country people. My point is that you all should cheer her on!!!!!!!!!!!! Its up to her what event she want to go into!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah you dont make it to the top of the juniors without a decent game. However, some of those juniors just cant translate to the adult tour and fade away. I think there is enough support out there for Heather, particularly with the increased interest in Laura, the LTA will be keen to ensure there are other players who can get up there with her :)

How does she play? is good on clay?

I've only ever seen her play once and that was a girls doubles match at Wimbledon last year with Tara Moore. To be honest, I wasn't focusing as much on Heather as I thought Tara was the better prospect for the future. But from what I can remember, she had some nice tidy groundstrokes but definately lacked power. Movement seemed OK, but it's difficult to judge a players movement in a doubles match on grass! Back then, Heather was a virtual nobody and has since climbed to #13 in juniors, so I can only assume that her game has dramatically improved. Hopefully I'll get to see her play again soon...

serenus_2k8
Apr 17th, 2009, 10:52 AM
Yeh I watched some doubles from those guys too, and I totally though Tara was the player carrying the team. Her groundstrokes were aggressive and very flat. She reminded me a bit of Bartoli in that respect, which made her effective on grass :)

Long time since someone posted in here!

Heather through to her first semi final in Frinton ($10k) after coming through qualifying.

QR1 def. Lewis: 6-2, 6-0
QR2 def. Bruzzone: 6-0, 6-0
R1 def. Balducci (7): 6-2, 6-0
R2 - def. Gasparri (Q): 6-2, 6-1
QF - def. George (WC): 6-1, 6-2

Impressive scorelines, but against unimpressive opponents to be fair. The real test will come in the semis where she will face 2nd seed Anna Smith.

EDIT - :o wow, you can tell I've not been following ITF's lately  Heather also reached the semis of Felixstowe last week, also as a qualifier. She eventually lost to Smith 6-1, 6-4 in the semis.

So she will debut in the rankings week after next :D

Same, they have split the first two sets, 6-4 in each one. Down to the 3rd now, Heather 5-1 up

EDIT: Watson def. Fitzpatrick - 4-6, 6-4, 6-2

First title comes as she expects to debut in the rankings, joining other young Brits Tara Moore and Laura Robson as young winners of 10k titles (Tara won this title last year.)

She will debut around the 770 mark, I believe. Nice work :woohoo:

watson def barthel 6-1 7-6

nice win for heather. i was impressed with her in the first set. barthel clearly had more power than her, and heather doesn't have one stand-out power shot, but her court sense, intelligence and shot choice seems to be excellent for someone so young. she frustrated barthel, played some good stuff, and the errors flowed from barthel as soon as heather got the first break.

in the second set, barthel played much better and served for the set twice, at 5-4 and 6-5, but heather showed good resilience to come back and take the set in a fairly comfortable tie break.

Sfar won 6-2 2-6 7-6
Watson v Sfar was actually a very high quality match for this level. Sfar's style of play was very different to most players with her slice, netplay and even chipping and charging at times. Bizarrely she kept complaining about the fact that there were no ballboys, etc

I talked to Heather's mum during the match, and she really seemed nice. Some of the coaches, parents, etc seem a bit stand-offish with fans, but she seemed to enjoy the fact that people were actually cheering for Heather and she talked freely with me :D

Surprised no-one's posted that Heather's into round two of the Orange Bowl in Florida.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. -- Kim Clijsters and Caroline Wozniacki weren’t anywhere near Crandon Park, but a pair of female finalists from the 2009 US Open opened Girls’ 18s play Monday at the Dunlop Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships. Reigning US Open junior champion Heather Watson and runner-up Yana Buchina each entertained an American wild card.

[...]

Hardebeck, a 15-year-old who won the USTA National Clay Court Championships in July, also tested her experienced opponent. With foot speed and a down-the-line backhand well beyond her years, the American earned five break points in the seventh game of the opening set.

But Watson washed away all five with versatile winners: two down-the-line backhands, an inside-out forehand, a backhand drop shot and unreturnable serve down the tee. Watson held for 5-2 with a crafty first-serve/drop-shot combination, showing striking improvement from the player she was just one year ago.

Watson’s 6-2, 6-2 win over Hardebeck was her first main-draw victory at an Orange Bowl event since 2005. She lost in the first round of the Girls’ 18s in 2008, Girls’ 16s in 2007 and Girls’ 14s in 2006.

“I don’t focus on winning as much any more,” said Watson. “I just focus on doing everything right, like my body language and technique. When I think about those things, I am taking pressure off myself and playing my best tennis.”

Now a Grand Slam champion, the girl from Guernsey, Great Britain, feels a little different in her second junior tournament since winning the US Open. And she’s not at all opposed to it.

“I’m definitely getting a lot more respect,” said Watson. “People are looking at me more, and I like it.”

Heather was granted a WC for the main draw at 100K Midland!

I saw her today when she lost in Sutton but I was so impressed by her. There's been a lot of hype around Laura but virtually nothing for Heather so I hope she can come and command hype with her tennis. It will be the biggest tournament she has played so hopefully she'll step up.

Seems Hev and her mum were put up for a press conference. Here's (http://ourmidland.com/articles/2010/02/09/sports/2412586.txt) the better of the pieces based on it that have shown up so far in Google Alerts. (Even if geography isn't the author's strong point.)

Thanks! @ him saying the UK is warm.

Anyway, Heather plays Beatrice Capra tomorrow. She's a qualifier, as the article says, and she is the same age ranked 150 places below Heather so a huge chance for Heather! A win would see her rise to #430!

The Gulf Stream makes Guernsey so warm.

Beatrice Capra defeated Heather Watson 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. It must be really cold in Midland!

Go Heather! :yeah: Although I get the feeling Vaidisova's going to decide to actually start playing well again this week so this will be really tough.

I hope she's not too tired, after she won a titanic doubles match yesterday too. Plays 5th seed Monique Adamczak, big chance!

Won her first match 6-2 1-6 6-2. But then lost to Georgie Stoop 6-3 6-0 :tape: but she got a LL and plays Anna Tatishvilli so a chance to redeem herself. :) A win would see her make the top 400, I think.

Recovered so well to get yet another top 200 win vs Anna Tatishvilli. In three sets.

Go Heather...break 300 by the end of this year!
I think she can go much further from the looks of it. She has a winning record vs the top 200 and 3-1 in the last two tournaments. She's just inexperienced and hopefully this first half of the year will be about gaining experience, playing her first WTA event and then of course Wimbly and then the second half can be about moving up the rankings and then of course the US Open. With this win she will be one point away from the top 400 and has already moved up like 151 places or something. She's doing so well!

I would love it if she caught up Laura and then they both moved up together.
