Sharapova à l'Open GDF
WTA Paris

Apparently, in that link posted yesterday on the french Eurosport, they make it official that Maria just confirmed her presence in this years GDF Open as her debut tournament for this season. :hearts: Is it really true? :bounce:

It makes no sense to rush back. If she couldn't make this AO, why play before March?

Because she needs matches before the big ones IW/Miami which she loves playing at maybe...

Yeah right! Of all the places for her to return she chooses Paris??

I personally think she won't be back until Indian Wells, minimum.

I personally think she won't be back until Indian Wells, minimum. You all already forget how Justine Henin started (career best!) 2007 season. She is not ready for AO/07, so withdraw... than she choose Paris indoors for her comeback - lose one set against Loit and against Golovin, before lose SF vs Safarova, but this matches very help her to back in perfect shape: she lose just three of next 60+ matches that season!

Kim Clijsters also have similar start of career best season (2005). She is forced to miss AO/05 and she choose to start at February Antwerp indoors... lose QF match... but at next two way bigger tournaments next month (Indian Wells and Miami) she reach titles!

So it's smart move from Sharapova to choose (and "sacrafice") one small February warm-up indoors tournament before IW and Miami important mandatory events.

Paris is a smart place to return to the tour. The field is decent but never too thick or stellar so it's a good place to get some match play and confidence.

finally I hope she plays, it would make paris quite an interesting tourney, cause Sharapova could possible not even be a seed :o

Justine and Maria have a VERY different relationship with Paris!

She could play any other event (if she is fit), I'm just shocked shes picked Paris

Justine wasn't coming back from a long injury either like Maria

If Justine not - Kim Clijsters in 2005 coming back from a long injury at small february indoors event (Antwerp in her case).

Pova herself said she was 3 weeks short from playing in Melbourne, thus if you do the maths, there's no reason can't play in Paris.
The Queen's sis. will be there too, it's gonna be so much fun

Good news if it's true the tour needs Maria.

If the only reason she withdrew from Aus was because she didn't feel ready and not because of her shoulder another month should be enough prep time.

I'm not arguing that playing a MM event before IW is a bad idea, because of course it would make sense. I'm just saying that I'm suprised that she has picked Paris.

Exactly. I wouldn't expect good results to begin with at all. The results will must likely only start coming once she has played herself back into form. In order to do that she needs matches and the sooner she can start getting them the better. This all makes sense to me.

It's not on her website that she's playing. If it's true, I would think they would promote it to sell tickets.

I have been pessimistic and skeptical since before Hong Kong and AO. I think she will play in Paris. I don't have a real high regard for what her team tells us---I just get the feeling she will play this time.

Apparently Eurosport has been showing a commercial about the broadcast of this tournament this year and they included Maria with some of the other "confirmed" players like Serena, Mauresmo, etc. I'm not sure how reliable this is though - I haven't watch anything yet on the regular european one.
