Not a very convincing performance at times by Jankovic.
On the other hand, her backhand was on fire and some well constructed points.
Winners/UEs 21-15

Flipkens played great.

My god, that was probably one of the most painful matches I've seen Jelena play. Forehand was SHIT. She needs new shoes ASAP. She was agitated and wasn't focused at all.

Flipkens dictated and "dicked" Jankovic around the court for most of the match.

Jankovic was moonballing like a 100 ranked player :tape:

I expect her to beat Sugiyama but Zvonareva is looming in the latter rounds.

Terrible match from the world number 1, she was lucky she was playing Kirsten, if it were any top 10 player she would be out of this tournament, that was a mediocre performance

Zvonareva should take care of Jankovic. If not, Safina surely will.

I think Flipper played pretty well, she knew she had nothing to lose and really dominated some of those ralleys!

:o Jelena played crap. Her forehand hardly even made it past the service line most of the time. I'm glad she finally won it. She better get it together for the later rounds :sobbing:

LOLL maybe it was far from Jankovic's best, but come on guys, it wasn't THAT bad, she hit more winners than UFES and lost her focus a few times, but I didn't think she looked like shit out there, Flipkens was on fire I thought... It makes me remember a bit the French Open and the US Open of last year, in which she struggled in both in early rounds...

Flipkens was close to being 4-1 up in that second set! She kinda blew it/JJ kinda stepped it up. It was a bit of both at that stage of the game. I had no doubt JJ would still prevail in straight sets though.

I agree that her second serve was off
and her movement was not at her best.
However, some great shots she had. And she hit more winners than UEs (21-15)

Outplayed on most of the points.
Bad bp conversion by kirsten, she had a bp in almost every game of the first set.

Flipkens played really well, especially at the net.She should be proud of herself.
JJ was struggling, still I never get the impression that Flipkens could beat her.She step it up each time she had to, broke back in each set and finished well. She looked unfocus at times but it's only her second match of he year so she needs to get in the rythm of things.

I see that like an improvement cause one year ago, JJ would have win that 12-10 in the third. She has a lot of pressure here, her opponent was playing probably her best match ever, and still she won in straights and never panicked. It's also these kind of matches that you have to win to stay n°1.She did it.

Indeed she didn't look at her 100% speed today, probably not perfectly confident with her new shoes yet... Her second serve was definitely very attackable also, but Jelena usually improves with every match she plays:)

I don't think Flipkens played great at all, she couldn't keep two flat backhands in a row in the court. She had some good moments tough and nice volleys.

When did you see her 2nd serve, she had 81% 1st serve (91% in the first set). I thought JJ served very well apart from that one game late in the 2nd set, she was just pushing the ball then.

JJ looked completely distracted today and her fh was shit. Kirsten played well, I guess.

Get it together, babe!

Well Flipkens went for her shots the whole match. She was quite agressive and coming to the net often. She probably wanted to escape the long rallies. It was smart tactically and she applied it well.Sure JJ played that like a pratice match at times but Flipkens should get credit where it's due cause she did quite well imo (especially if I compare this with the other matches I saw since the first round started).

here's a bit of info about Flipkens, which shows that we'll hear more of her ...
http://www.sportingo.com/tennis/a11055_why-jelena-jankovic-finally-ready-slam-injuries-selfdoubt

"Examples of unfulfilled potential include the anonymous senior career of the supremely gifted Maria-Emilia Salerni, who reached junior world No.1 in both singles and doubles the year before Jankovic, but who currently languishes at number 242 in the senior rankings. Kirsten Flipkens is another whose name would hardly be recognised on a court, let alone in the street.
She was the world junior No.1 in 2004 - and was supposed to ride the ephemeral Belgian conveyor belt of talent to the summit of the senior game, joining her compatriots, Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, in creating the tennis dynasty that ‘never was."

In other words the girl is good.

Not up to the caliber of when she was playing Serena at the US OPEN, but she, like the William sisters tends to be a little distracted against lower ranked players that come out of no where. this is just the warmup hopefully.

Euhm... I wouldn't hype her too much...
Judging by the score and the reviews, Kirsten played a very good match, and I'm really happy about that!
But she was number 1 in the juniors, ok, but she was 18 at the moment. Compared to Clijsters and Henin, she is not good... They never got to number one because they already turned pro long before they were 18...
Kirsten isn't bad, but not THAT good.
I hope she can finally be injury free and become a consistent top 100 player (hoping for top 75).

Flipkens played a great match, but she was given far too many oppurtunities by Jelena. Jankovic's length of the forehand was woefully poor and it enabled Flipkens to dictate readily with the forehand and move in tight at the net. Jelena just looked really flat, and ironically her serve looked the more stable element today.

Her backhand was consistent as it always is, but she wasnt using it with much purpose. Very centralised shots from Jankovic, and it gives the opponent a lot of time to create winners from miid-court balls. Tactically, wasnt very astute today. Would weave in and out of being aggressive to just pushing the ball back in play.

Will have to improve, which i'm sure she's well aware of.

The worst match from Jankovic since I don't remember when :o

JJ :cuckoo: that was horrid to watch :o total disinterest in playing any agressive shot :o I can't believe I woke up to watch this crap  She better geT it toGETher, or else.... :fiery:

On a serious note.....ANTA better make her propper shoes, one could really see her movement was restricted cause of them :( or she should get back to her old RBK shoes :tape:

P.S. I still don't see why did she bulk up, cause she's neither hitting the ball harder, nor having more stamina, nor being faster  Though, maybe she thought she would look more intimidating to opponents if she's larger
