It's rare in today's game when a player gets better after age 25.
Lena seems ready for a big year

Olympics is pretty good. Of course, she's good at beating Dinara and Serena along the way.
Done that for 3 different titles

She's basically beaten everyone on her way to winning those titles. Only an idiot would say the Olympics, Dubai, Sydney were mickey mouse titles.

Agreed its not mickey mouse!! I am by no means Elena's biggest fan, but give her credit where its due. She had to beat quality players en route to her titles and done a great job in my opinion, she is also a role model to those people over 25 showing that if you have dreams and want to achieve, age is a negligible factor. I am loving the late blooming.

Exactly. I have never understood the logic of those who say "My favorite player is great because she's won X slams, and BTW every player she beat to win those slams is a punk-ass scrub who shouldn't even be on the tour."

Being a great player means beating other great players. It's why Ali was the greatest and Larry Holmes is just a guy who was the heavyweight champ.

Yes, it is a major title. In a normal year there are 4, every 4 years there is 5.

In your opinion, what is it then?

It's not an opinion. It's a fact. Olympics is not a major. Majors aka grand slams are Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and Us Open.

Hope this helps.

I'm starting to believe in Elena. I thought she was going to fade again like she has... but she seems ready to take over right now.
BTW... if you think that an Olympic gold is "mickey mouse"... please think again.
Roger Federer has not managed to achieve one.
Anyways, congrats on this achievement, Elena.

I agree surprisingly, without the talents of Henin, Sharapova, Davenport, Clijsters, Hingis, Pierce geez womens tennis has gone notches below par. Even Venus can win Roland Garros nowadays.

pierce won the french open the year venus won 2 slams and was RU twice, i'd say pierce was a much better claycourter than venus.

You can say whatever you want, Venus didn't reach RG SF since 2002, she is a mess on clay, even Sharapova(you know the cow on ice) has better results than Vee on clay lately.

My point is they wouldn't stop Venus from winning FO. She is 3-3 vs Hingis and 3-0 vs Pierce on clay. Since 2002 Venus lost to Zvonareva, myskina, druggiecheva, washedupsova, jankovic and pennetta. None of them is in the list of players you mentioned and only one of them is retired.

Oh please, if Pennetta stopped a healthy Venus during RG, a lot of players can. Sadly but true.

:haha: Guilty as charged, my friend! :haha:

It's interesting. Winning majors has always sort have been the "gold star" to be considered a great player, but, if, as somebody speculates, Lena gets to 20+ victories without a major title, do you have to start to reconsider that as a qualification? I haven't gone to the list yet, but how many players have won that many titles and remained slamless? It can't be very many.

Majors can be overrated, too. Love her or hate her, JJ is right--there are a few title holders who just got hot for a couple of weeks and haven't had anywhere near Lena's longevity or quality with nearly her whole career in the Top 20.

I'll admit I'm far too biased to begin an objective discussion on the topic, but it could be an interesting one. Of course, I'd be happier if Elena would render it moot by adding a big fat major to her list.

On another topic, no, I the Olympics are not a major. Elena herself indicated that when she said she'd rather win an Olympics "than a slamr" instead of saying "Of all the slams, I want the Olympics the most." . On the other hand, I think their importance has grown dramatically over the years. It seems that the younger players who have grown up in the era of the professional Olympic athlete do take the Games more seriously, and it's possible, I think, that some day the Olympics will be perceived if not equal to the Slams, as being something bigger than a Tier I.

How ? Maria has never been dominant and/or consistent enough to stay n°1 more than few weeks. Her resume as n°1 is pretty poor and she has never been able to keep a high level of play for a whole year (her best YE ranking is 2).

In your first post you were linking her with Henin saying players (like Elena) wouldn't win as much.Fact is Maria never won a whole bunch of events either (like what Justine was able to do in 2007 for example). When talking about slams you do the same : it's "Maria and the sisters..." but Maria never made more than one slam final in the same year and is clearly not in the same league than Serena and Venus in numbers of slams.

Sure she is a top player and would add someting to the mix with her competitivity and intensity but she's not Henin or the Williams. You should stop linking them all the time.

Wrong, Maria has never been healthy to stay N1 more than few weeks, believe me or not, everytime Maria could stay N1, she was injured, she is clearly enough consistent to stay at the top.
And again, you wrong, she has been able to keep a high level in 2006(she won 5 tournaments and reached at least SF of every tournaments she entered except RG(1/8 against Safina when she should have won btw)), and her best YE ranking is N2, so what, if I remember the competition was very tough(Mauresmo won 2 Slams, Henin won RG and made 3 GS Finals) when she finished N2, another proof is she won a Major the same year, won 3 T1 and 1 tier 2 and still finished N2. Don't compare with JJ who finished N1 with only 1 slam final, WONDERFULL.
To conclude, yeah Maria is in the same league as Serena and Venus, since 2004 she won 3 Slams, like WS, plus Maria won on 3/4 surfaces, no need to talk how well she won her last major, noone play such an high level in 2008, injuries ruined her season, she should have been N1 for sure. You gotta be kiddin me.
