Baltacha is doing so well. I hope she changes her big glasses!

Jan 20th, 2009, 04:12 AM
i suspect ALG would have struggled with the heat today. Looks like you can focus on dubs with Patty (who is going out as well by the looka of it).

Jan 20th, 2009, 10:48 AM
i suspect ALG would have struggled with the heat today. Looks like you can focus on dubs with Patty (who is going out as well by the looka of it).

Actually, she's been training a lot in Brisbane and Melbourne recently and I thought she could use that to her advantage today. I'm shocked and disappointed by this result really.

Jan 20th, 2009, 10:50 AM
Bally up to about 110 with this win. Getting closer to the top 100 spot she has chased all these years.

Have to say, I agree.... On form and injury-free, she's very impressive.

Jan 20th, 2009, 03:47 PM
ALG

Jan 20th, 2009, 03:57 PM
Well done Elena :woohoo: now beat Momo :D

Jan 20th, 2009, 04:30 PM
Bally seems to have what none of the other British girls have - a big match temperament.

She's never played well enough, consistently enough, to rise up the rankings, but she's got to the third round here before, and at Wimbledon, and into the second round at Wimbledon a couple of times too.

That wouldn't be impressive for a top player, but it's well above expectations for a player who has spent most of her career ranked about 150.

This run should see her only just outside the top hundred - a career best, even if she falls in the next round.

So well done, Elena!

Very pleased for Elena, I have always felt that at peak form, she is the best British player (although I do have to give credit to Anne who with confidence has looked very very impressive of late). Here's hoping she can keep up this form, she has very little to defend until the big chunk at the start of April, so this is about as good a chance as she may have to finally break into the top 100. Long overdue!

Jan 20th, 2009, 05:02 PM

Great win:D

Jan 20th, 2009, 05:24 PM
Good job Bally!

I've always felt Elena was talented but her health problems prevented her from ever developing that talent into a consistent dependable resource. I do think she has a chance against Amelie but she's got to be playing very well.

Jan 20th, 2009, 06:28 PM
Elena :yeah:

Jan 20th, 2009, 06:30 PM
Well done Bally :D

Good to see one Brit girl make it through :)

Jan 20th, 2009, 06:48 PM

HOpe she makes the top 100 soon :)

I still think Keothavong is :p

Maybe there should be a poll :tape:

Peak Keothavong .vs. Peak Baltacha thread! lets save it for the off season ;)

I always thought Baltacha was the best British player from the main 4 (Bally, Anne, Mel & Katie) and I was waiting for her to break through the way that Keothavong has done. Maybe this is the beginning of the surge :rocker2:

Jan 20th, 2009, 08:11 PM
*boards the train late* Yay Elena! Salvaging some 1st round joy for the UK! Bring it!

PS - I always have thought Elena had the most potential out of that crop of British girls too... but Anne has really put the work in and achieved much more than I thought she ever would. For Elena it all depends on staying healthy and giving herself some margin for error, I guess!

Europe rocks
Jan 20th, 2009, 08:50 PM
Lovely win Bally, didn't think you would pull it off, but nice to see that Scottish fighting spirit shining through :) Best of luck against Momo

Jan 20th, 2009, 08:59 PM
well done to the best british player:worship:

no way :(

congrats to Bally though, well deserved :D

Jan 20th, 2009, 09:33 PM
baltacha got a pretty good game. I remember her playing against capriati at wimby three years ago. but i din't really understood why she is ranked pretty low.
good for her.
Whats up with ALG.? I though her serve is pretty big

Jan 20th, 2009, 09:34 PM
well done to the best british player:worship:

i think it is keothovong but baltacha has a lo of experiece though.

Jan 20th, 2009, 09:37 PM
Bally :yeah: Good Luck against Amelie!

Jan 20th, 2009, 09:46 PM
Well done, Elena. It would be great if she could get into the top 100 - we could even have three girls in the top 100 very soon as Mel South is also close despite her 1r loss. I think Amelie will beat her but given Amelie's lack of consistency these days, Bally could pull off an upset, for sure.

As for Anna-Lena, she just needs to shrug off this dire result and start the year again. File along with Cirstea, Pavlyuchenkova et al!
