Aga hates to play in windy conditions. She couldn't put a ball in the court like in Miami last year

Congrats to Katya, she dealt with the conditions better than Aga. I hope she gets far now.
Aga :smash: I don't think she's ever played a match when she's made around 50 UEs :tape: Too bad she couldn't get the 1st set... saved 7 SPs (at *4-5 0-40, *5-6 15-40 and 2 more in the TB, Katya was 5-1 up too). Very disappointing.

If you were smart, you'd sign all your contracts now instead of waiting. Clearly you're not going any higher, and once you fall those contracts are going to go away

Just saw the end of 2nd and 3rd sets. Both were struggling to adjust to the conditions (heat and wind)but Bondarenko just did it better.Aga played quite bad and she has still a lot of work to do (especially physically)cause talent alone won't be enough.

Horrorshow for Radwanska... she really does hate the heat/wind combo. Some good play by Kateryna in really tough conditions... if I were a player I'd be way happier on a sheltered arena court today! Ouchies.

I started watching at the beginning of the 3rd set. Wowza!! I never thought I would see Aga run out of gas, but she definately did. This is a surprising result for me as I didn't see K.Bondarenko as being consistent, but who knows?

goldenlox
Jan 20th, 2009, 01:44 AM
It's very hot and some players are not going to handle it well, especially if their opponent is feeling no pressure and swinging away.
It's tough to run down a lot of balls in this heat. It screws up your focus, you're thinking about shade and ice packs

Aga looked like she was really suffering with the heat out there. Bondarenko played pretty well considering the conditions and just jumped on Aga from the beggining of the third and didn't let up. COngrats Katya and too bad Aga.

Jan 20th, 2009, 01:46 AM

The wind made Radwanska's puff-balls look comical. Off-day most likely, but still this wasn't exactly a bad match-up for her. K. Bond cartainly couldn't hit through her consistently enough, nor does she possess the same defensive skills or consistency of groundstrokes. In the 3rd set she played like a ballbasher, minus the ability to hit winners.

At least K. Bond has something which resembles a kill shot in the form of her BH. Her FH is still loopy and basically useless but against someone with an equally ineffective FH, it didn't matter too much. Bondy anticipated excellently on her BH passing shots, although even standing at the service line, Radwanska was still incapable of hitting through her. :o

K. Bond's 1st serve is tricky to read thanks to her un-orthodox motion. Some of her flat ones down the T came out of nowhere, and left Radwanska stoic. 2nd serve is still a dolly. So much so, that Rad was teeing off for ROS winners off it (BH DTL off 2nd serves in the deuce court mainly).

@ 10am i saw sveta was practicing with Amelie, then around 5pm she came back and do some more practicing. she doesn't look injured at all

Agata.

Aga
She couldn't deal with the heat and wind :/ This 51 UEs :/
Polish commentator said that he saw her during the break after the 2nd set and she seemed to be really very tired.

Katya :yeah:
She played really well, was consistent, deserved victory :)

Iíve seen it from the middle of the 2nd set, and well, what can I say, that was pathetic and absolutely ridiculous at times. Not only was she serving like an outside-of-100 player, but everything that built her success- variety, intelligence, consistency, net play, drop shots etc. was off. She lost some obvious won points being unable to construct the game, playing foreseeable, brainless tennis and she learn from her mistakes. Whatís more she faced some serious problems with hitting the ball from height, so she couldnít handle Katerynaís occasional moonballing. Tragic performance that indicates a dangerous meltdown. Aga will have to do a lot to make up for this.

Congrats Katya, although I donít think youíll make it too far

Could someone add the score to the thread title?

fouc
Jan 20th, 2009, 02:26 AM
well, don't give me this heat&wind talk. i wouldn't overestimate the conditions. i got the impression that Katya was struggling with the heat more than Aga.

Agnieszka :crying2:... this was her worst performance ever from the performances that I saw. I had to walk away from my computer at 0:3 in the third set. Never done it before, so it was very bad. Okay, the rest of the slam will be stress free so I will be able to sit back and enjoy it

Huge upset. What are her chances to stay in the top 10 after the AO?. She was defending QFs points.

Wozniacki would have to reach the semifinal for Aggy to drop to 11... but Petrova is so near  gogo Sania!!!

I really, really, really hope this is not Vaidisova/Hantuchova/Szavay thing.

She was off for whatever reason but the conditions didn't help.Looking at her, Bondarenko seemed more hurted by the heat but somehow it doesn't affected her game that much.

matty
Jan 20th, 2009, 03:12 AM
Hantuchova's loss to her last week doesn't hurt quite so much to me now

....but seriously, everyone has bad days, and to me she looked tired at the very beginning of the match--maybe she caught a bug or was just not up to the heat.

peanuts
Jan 20th, 2009, 03:44 AM
  I didn't see this one coming. I know KBondarenko is capable of an upset but I thought Radwanska will be too solid to get beaten by Bondarenko's free swinging game.

Those were my exact thoughts as I was watching. There was no resemblance to the real A. Radwanska

Aga in post-match interview said that she lost to her rival and not to heat or wind, so it basically cuts the crap about the conditions. Papa Radwanski refuses to comment.
And it seems that Bondarenko is another Polish-speaking player on tour!

I would like to think this was just a bad day and not longer lasting slump. The only way to find out is to wait.
