Wow. Barrois missed a BP in the first game of the final set...
And she missed SPs in the first set.

Dementieva could be gone.

Kristina was on fire for the first 2 sets...

Absolutely crushing forehands...

A little concerned for Elena... Possible injuries and a racquet change???? Whats the idea behind that???

Good Final Set!

Gosh, what a way of starting the first Slam of the season. Can't she have a comfortable first round win for once and spare her fans the pain?

I knew thi would happen, she was being so match greedy that went ahead and tired herself off on the second day. This was bad match from her.

Based on what i have seen so far she will NOT win the AO this year.

Dementieva was VERY LUCKY in the 1st set... if Kristina has played a bit better in the tiebreak, she'll be home in Russia by Wednesday... :tape:

Well, at least she survived... but she'll need to do better in the next round...

Winning ugly..lol

Lena can onl go better from here. Very bad tennis from her, let Barrois shine and hit about two hundred UE.

So much room for improvement. But oh well, this was the first round, she should unpack her A game in the quarters first.

Today she played 8% and still won

1st set was close. Barrois played really well... she is realy good!

not a good result for Dementieva, last set was good,
Glad she got through to second round. Poor performance from Dementieva :(

go for the title! :P

as i said a couple of days ago all those wins weren't necessarily the best medicine for Elena heading into what going to be very hot 2 weeks in Melbourne. it would be quite hilarious if Patty benefited from one of the favourites losing her section of the draw again and making the quarters despite her complete lack of form.

I'm not really worry about this, It is good to have some kind of letdown against low level players, I'm pretty sure that she will play much better against players that she knows better, she didn't knew nothing about Barrois, it might hurt her, but it is nothing to be concern right now...

Elena is 11-0 this year, but this was very sloppy.
Fortunately she gets a day off and a very winnable 2nd round opponent.
She needs to get her rhythm back by the weekend.

Horrid from Elena apart from the third set... Barrois should get a lot of credit for really attacking her though, had Kristina held her nerve just a bit better in the first, it could have been beyond saving for Dementieva. Can only get better, though... surely?

eek!

Whatever it is, the last I saw Lena play was at Sydney and at the time, I must say I was rather impressed with her BH. She hit lots of BH DTL. Didn't watch it today, but she must have reverted back to her hitting down the middle.

God, being an Elena fan is like signing up for medical research on the Island of Dr Moreau.

She always struggles early, in tournaments she wins, in tournaments where she goes deep, and in tournaments where she loses early.

I suppose it could be worse. I could be a Vikings fan. No... wait ...

I think the yellow raquet she was playing with in Auckland and Sydney was a paint job. No way she would change raquets without having match practise with it.

Elena needs to have some ugly matches in order to go far. Especially early on.

It's when she cruises early that seasoned Dementieva fans get concerned.

Seasoned Dementieva fans are ALWAYS concerned.

Don't let the sweet smile and constant kindness to fans fool you. The woman is a sadistic monster who subsists solely on the still-beating hearts she yanks from the chests of her fans.

Different kind of rust. She's playing on the third different surface in 3 weeks time in different conditions. It's incredibly warm and windy out there right now. Commentators saying 40 degrees celcius, that's unreal. Like elena said at the start of sydney, she'll need some time to get mentally in it again after winning a tournament. And obviously looking at today that was the case, scraped the first set after coming back from 5-2, then made 15 errors in 7 games and recovered herself mentally in the third. That's what a topplayer does and she did well. It's definetly not about the fitness, she's in incredible shape right now. If she can get herself together mentally in the next 2 matches and puts her focus on the tournie she'll be tough to beat. :)

The yellow is the RDS 001, the stick she has used for AGES.

It's weird that once the PJ comes off, she plays awful. hmmmm

An Ok match from Lena. AO 1st round is always tough for her.

Barrois was surprisingly steady from the baseline while Dementieva was mishitting a little bit. Once Elena got focused it was all over for Kristina.

I only caught bits of it. From what I saw of Barrois, she has some big shots when she flattens them out (FH/BH DTL's were doing some big damage early on), although whenever Lena D. started to dictate play, KB reverted just to junkballing off both sides. Barrois' movement was suspect. Wasn't particularly agile and struggled with her co-ordination although it's to be expected from somone so tall. 1st serve is huge for a player of her level.

She played shit hot in the 1st 6 games or so, then choked a little when serving out the 1st set. 2nd set was Demrntieva losing focus and self-destructing. Barrois played much the same in the 3rd as she did in the previous set, but Lena was much too good.

I wouldn't read too much into this match, in terms of Dementieva's tournament winning chances. Certainly Barrois was one of the trickier 1st round draws.

This match means nothing unless Lena doesn't improve from it. She played a very erratic power player, and never established a solid rhythm.
She's 3-0 against Benesova and should get more consistent against someone she knows

For better or worse, Elena is one of those players for whom the word "form" has no meaning. She can play a match like yesterday's and turn around and win the next one 6-1, 6-1, or go from winning matches 6-1, 6-1 to getting demolished herself (see last year's Aussie Open).

That's why I didn't believe the hype going in, and I'm not going to panic now. Elena is always a dark horse--likely to make the second week, but an iffy proposition from then on. Though like any dark horse, a lucky bounce here and there ...

Expected result.

Just like Auckland 1R; a player isn't capable of hitting Lena off court for a sustained period of time. Lena was horrid from about 2-2 second set, so many errors.

But as per usual, Miss Resilient come through and is a different player in final sets.

Not worried at all by this one.
She had a lesser match and she still came through.
Saying she should have been out of the tournament already is complete and utter bullshit. She won that tiebreak fair and square and if she herself hadn't made those errors at 6-5, there wouldn't even have been one.
Plus, she's won many a match when things looked hopeless. This one was a walk in the park compared to some of the matches she's played before.

Please people, I understand we're not all fans of her, but let's not make mockery out of our own mental capabilities.
