I feel like players are using more strategy and more variety now than let's say 5 or 6 years ago,

especially on this medium paced hard court (Australian Open) that really picks up the slice and a lot of balls are not flying after they bounce.

What do you guys think?

Watch almost any match in this championship and in future tournaments. You'll see players using a lot more slices or using angles.

depends on who you're watching.... There are several players using more strategy; however, there are about twice any many ball bashers....

I tend to agree somewhat. Athleticism and hard hitting today is just not enough. All the ladies are fine athletes and are in shape. Pace now is the norm, so true everyone now to compete has added slices, angles, and lobs to their arsenals. Even Venus is lobbing.

The only match where I've seen slices is the Medina-Garrigues vs. Holland match. Unless you're talking about the mens match :p

Ask Rezai what she thinks (if she can) about that.

:weirdo:

a lot of the matches i'm watching people are using slices

granted, some of the matches like hantuchova-dellacqua, there are no slices being used (unless drop shot), but u can see hantuchova is not just being slap happy with the ball any more. she is actually trying to move the ball around the court and open up angles.... not going for broke all the time... you could see this in the ao semifinal last year as well. and of course, there will always be the ones who just go for broke all the time (rezai).

also, some high profile players really aren't using that much more slices/strategy than before, but because the tour is more competitive now, players are starting to add other things to their games

i may also mention that just because players are using more slices/strategy in their game, that doesn't mean that the game appears better now or that there are less U.E.s, but at least we see more players now trying different things (rather than just standing on the baseline and wacking the ball), even if their strategies aren't the most effective.
