They both sucked bad. Chakvetadze tried to play a little more controlled tennis but she is so far away from her old level. Anne is crap.

Nice 1st and 3rd sets but pathetic 2nd set. If Anna could only play high percentage tennis and make her opponent move she wouldn't struggle that much.

sammy01
Jan 19th, 2009, 09:16 AM
as for chak starting serving at the begining of the 3rd set, it was the umpires fault and really anne needs to keep track of these things, its like venus vs sprem tiebreak, venus should have stopped and got the score correct as soon as there was any thought or doubt in her mind.

cmon chak, now against dokic life don't get any easier.

Yep the umpire should have seen it. It's their job. I'm just really glad that Anna won. Heck! I'm happy to see her win any match as it doesn't happen too often these days. Based on the stats, she hit a boatload of UEs but she kept a high percentage of first serves and in the end it was enough for a win. Not a lot of people gave her much of a chance to survive so it's great to see her in the second round. I like her chances against Dokic. :)

Keothavong should have served first in the final set, but Chakvetadze came out and served first instead. Nobody noticed the mistake (including the umpire) until the end of the game, by which time it was too late to do anything about it, so they just carried on.

It may have made a difference but I very much doubt it. Anne seemed more upset by the bad call on the first point of her service game and she played a few shocking points after that.

im sorry but that was the fakest timeout anne took ever. anne broke for *3-2 2nd set and then anna won 2 very tight games and totaly swung the momentum to sit down leading 4-3*. anne at this moment takes a 10 minute timeout to get 2 tablets for some supposed stomach problem and comes back out screaming come on's running like a mad woman. if there was anything wrong with anne it certainly never showed before or after the injury timeout.

i like anne and she wasn't breaking the rules but it was pretty obvious the reason she took the time out.

Yeh, its a shame, but winning a set against top 20 players while well off her best is ok.

i didn't see anything wrong with her screaming cmon's and pumping her fist at the end of the 2nd set.

If she was doing it tactically she would have just got a massage on her leg or something. Why would she ask for pills? That is the last thing an athlete would want if they didnt need them. And they took about 1 sec to swallow, hardly a huge delay?

Thats just a stupid comment when Anna won anyway.

That's no certainty. People on this board act like Anne is some kind of world-beater:rolleyes:

 Actually no, but Anne is very consistant, and Anna is just not. For some reason Anne was just smacking the ball rather than rallying, however when she did rally she was taking the points. With Annas current form, Anne playing consistantly would have been enough to win I believe.

The Dawntreader
Jan 19th, 2009, 06:26 PM
Still, there was no real certainty that she was going to win if she had been 'fit' (which i dont even believe she was that injured). Anna has tons of match experience at Slams, and she's generally a better player overall.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility for Anna C to be better than another player, despite how much people on this board try and disprove that theory;)

serenus_2k8
Jan 19th, 2009, 06:38 PM
Well obviously its not a certainty, I was just giving my opinion. I doubt it matters to Anne or anyone else whether you think she was injured, but she actually had a stomach problem, not an injury.

And Anna C can play great tennis, but if you had actually watched the match you would realise that she wasnt playing great tennis yesterday.

Im not going to even try and say somthing positive.

She should have beaten Anna. Says somthing about the way her career has gone if she had to stoop low and serve first in the third when she wasnt supposed too :o Dokic should fly by her.

It just wasnt Annes day, but there will be more, im sure, just fustrating she let this chance go by.

Hated this draw so glad it's over.

Anne  She can play better than this, I think she wasn't feeling well during some of it. Also it seemed like in the first set she was almost trying too hard but not really thinking about what she was doing.

Anna :yeah: It's a win. Not up to her former standard or it would have been straights 6-1 6-1. Making over 50 UEs isn't good either but I suppose Dokic made almost the same amount. But Anna didn't have much of a warm-up leading into this tournament so hopefully she can keep winning and improve. Next round is v. tough.

But she knew what she was doing was wrong, so why do it in the first place. It shouldnt have been down to Anne or the Umpire. She was struggling after that second set and she was looking for a little help to get herself the lead. Sports about fair play

no, chak walked out to play the 3rd set on her side, all the balls were at her end (which indicates the end the server serves from) and she started serving, she did absolutely nothing wrong. its not like she got the ball boys to put all the balls at her end and then start serving, the umpire and court officals screwed up as at the start of a set the balls should be at the end the server starts from, end of.

its not chaks job to umpire the match and i return the question on you, you would have thought anne would have said something about it and pointed out the mistake? exactly neither of them knew the error had been made thats why neither said anything, unless you think anne was so zoned in she didn't notice but chak wasn't lol.

Vespertine69
Jan 19th, 2009, 07:53 PM
Jesus, watching this match nearly killed me. I had to leave for work at 3-0 in the third and the tube ride in until I could check the scores again was torture! Bravo Anna for finding a way to return to some sort of decent form in the third after that appalling 35 UE 2nd set, which goes down as one of the worst I've seen at tour level *shudder*.

I feel bad for Anne, and her fans - this was a winnable match given Anna's form, and I think unfortunately the pressure got to her more than anything else. I think being talked about and interviewed and pressured much more than she has been used to in her career probably caused her to perform like she did. That said, credit to Anne for not simply folding in the second set as I thought might happen. She reigned in her margins and for a while at least, Anna obliged her by spraying balls all over the place. I hope Keothavong can take the positives and move on. As for the medical timeout... I'm unsure. It's quite possible that Anne was feeling sick, but if she really had a stomach problem that needed intervention, I'm a little surprised she didn't call for assistance a lot earlier when she was looking a bit out of it in the first set. Of course, given that none of us stand in her shoes, that's just speculation.

As for this silly idea that Anna is somehow a superbitch cheat for not correcting the serve order in the third set... it's patently ridiculous to somehow lay the blame on Anna. The mistake was made by the umpire and the rest of the court staff, it is NOT the player's responsibility to govern this. Players at full tour level don't ever need to think about this issue, because there is always a team of people who sort it all out for them. As the ES commentator said during the match, he had never seen this happen in 24 years covering tennis - it's a bizarre anomaly and it isn't the job of the players to police the officials. I can understand the argument that on sporting grounds Anna should have said something if she realised the mistake, but I don't understand why anyone can suggest that Anna should have been totally aware of the fault when Keothavong clearly was not aware. This whole thing was a bad mistake on the part of the umpire and other officials who should be watching out for such things, players never have to think about this, so who's to say they don't mostly autopilot it because their minds are elsewhere? Given what a nutjob wreck Anna is on court lately, I find it particularly shitty that people can think she's hyperaware of this particular issue when she can't keep her head together on almost any other level during key points of a match. Anna has absolutely no record of being a cheat of any kind, and to accuse her in this way is just bullshit.

I can handle people saying that Anna can't play for toffee anymore, because hey... it is sort of true. But a cheat she is not.
