View Full Version : AO R1: K. Knapp def. M. Wejnert 7-6 6-4

Second set could have been easier. Karin was pounding the ball insanely at the beginning of the second set  going up 4-0.

Monika makes me laugh: she plays really well, but between points she looks like a Barbie holding a lollipop in her hand.

Monika

Great effort though from the 16 y.o. Queensland rookie. Playing in her first Grand Slam main draw she held her own very well. She was hardly smacked off the court, and really hung tough for most of the match :)

In the opening set Knapp had several set points with Wejnert serving at 4-5. But Monika cooly saved them all and then went on to break Knapp's serve to take a 6-5 lead. She was within two points of winning the opening set but was forced to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak Wejnert was down 3-5 but won three points in a row to earn a set point. However Knapp closed it out 7-6(6) in just under an hour.

In the second Knapp ran out to an early 4-0 lead. Wejnert then struggled to hold serve for 4-1, but when she did she was right back in the match. She picked up her game and got it back to 3-4 where she had chances to level at 4-4. Unfortunately she couldn't take them and Knapp ran out a 7-6(6) 6-4 winner in a hotly contested match.

Mon's serve let her down, 12 double faults and only 56% of first serves into play. But she still managed to save 10/13 break points, thanks largely to her forcing play. Obviously Mon played her heart out and did a good job. You will definitely hear of her again in the future. She is very promising for the future of Australian tennis!
Well done to Karin, good luck in R2.

Very impressed by this 16 year old. Hope to see a lot more from her in the future...

Not a bad result, Knapp did used to be a pretty decent player (her ranking isn't a good representation, mind you neither is Monikas).

Urghh, what crap news to come home to. I seriously thought she could win a set in this match. She showed she could get herself in a position to win but couldn't finish it off

Still it was a great effort. I can't wait to watch when I have time!

Monica played quite well and fought hard :)

Bad luck Monika, but good performance in her Slam debut. Hope to see more of her at next year's Open :)

I'm glad we have girls like Wejnert and Holland to look forward to as future prospects. :yeah:

It's all been a quick process for Monika, give her some more time and she'll be a great player.

No shame here, and it was a decent scoreline. Lots to look forward to it seems :)

Well done Monika on a good fight, and congrats Karin.

Good fight, Monika! :yeah:

A big thumbs up to TA for giving our young guns a shot, they're showing they're ready for it. :)

Is she in the girls' event? :)

Jan 19th, 2009, 07:08 AM
A win, any win, is great for her :D

Jan 19th, 2009, 07:11 AM
Aw Mon :(... good fight though. A case of if only, especially the first set.

Monika's serve return position looks like she is just standing there. A couple of times I thought she was waiting for something.

The way she cranes her head on backhands is strange too . Also the way her wrist is so firm and flat on forehand contact. She has a really unconventional game, but it's great to see.

Monika played well, her down the line shots are brilliant. However I think sometimes when the ball is short she's a bit scared to smack it hard. She needs to work on her serve, and then she'll be a great player!

now plz don't lose against Voskoboeva:o

First time seeing Wejnert.

She is HOT with a triple capital H.

Her game is ok, just kind of throws herself at the ball but it goes deep. Doesn't look like she is trying to hard or even cares about the match but she finds a way to win points.

Overall she has a long way to go but I see some potential in there.

Jan 19th, 2009, 09:16 PM
It mightn't look like she is trying overly hard but during the points she has a great level of intensity that never wavers and that's pretty good for a 16 y.o
And then she transforms herself between points, always so cool, calm and collected

I think Wejnert sucks...

Jan 19th, 2009, 09:27 PM
Really good match. :worship:

Wejnert will be top 100 someday (soon), and Knapp was playing ridiculously at the beginning of the second set. She should do that more often.

gosh, Mon :(

we really have no prodigy in the womens field like we do with Tomic....who stands out as a top rising talent
