Very ugly match and very nervy play from both sides..But well done sania for doing enough to win it in straights..This is like th ebest draw she could have got for such a low ranked player..Please take advatnage Sania :wavey:

wonderful stats. :help:

i was rooting for Sania but the result wouldn't have pleased me either way. :(

i remember watching both play venus last year with the right attitude and a lot of shots landing in. :o
Sania, really agressive, placing the serve well.
Marta's serve was on fire at some points if i remember well.

hopefully Sania defends her points.
anyone knows what will be Marta's ranking now.

get it together, girls.

Really ugly stats though, I'm sure she'll need to play a lot better to have any shot against Petrova.

Mirza cruises through first round match-up

Monday 19 January 2009
By Bronwen Largier

Indian Sania Mirza has won through to the second round of Australian Open 2009 in straight sets by defeating Poland’s Marta Domachowska 6-1 6-4.
It was an easy first set for the Indian favourite, breaking her opponent three times to take the set in just 25 minutes.
When Mirza broke again in the second game of the second set, the match looked to be over. Domachowska then broke back in the next game and went on to win the next two games, breaking Mirza a second time and finally lead on the scoreboard at 2-3.
The set continued on serve until the eighth game, where Domachowska saved two break points before an unforced error gave Mirza her fifth break of the match.
Two games later, Domachowska was three match points down at 40-0. Mirza needed just one to win the match when Domachowska produced her 37th unforced error.
Last year Mirza became the first Indian woman to break the US$1 million mark in prize money.
The 22-year-old, currently ranked No. 108 after injury kept her off the court for much of last season, will face Russian 10th seed Nadia Petrova in the second round.
Quick facts
Domachowska served the only three aces of the match
Mirza made 20 unforced errors to the Pole’s 37
Both players made less than half of their first serves (Mirza 47 per cent, Domachowska 45 per cent)
Mirza converted six of her 10 break point chances

I hate when players I like play each other in the first round. I'm really happy that Sania won since she really needed it, but it sucks thinking that Marta is going to fall in the rankings now
