First set was great from Jelly, but the second set when things went bad she tried to hit harder and made tons of errors, and 3rd was streaky.
Good Luck in R2:bounce:

Possibly the worst quality match ever to grace the Vodafone arena (or whatever it is called these days). Tamira has shown no sign of improvement since last season what so ever, the serve in particular is shocking. Dokic fans (I know its hard not to, but) I wouldn't read too much into this

Can someone cut my wrists please? :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry:

Awful Ball Toss (her serve is even worse than last year) and the worst thing is: She was so defensive, no aggressiveness at all :o

I don´t know what is wrong with her lately

I´m devastated :crying2:

Congrats Jelena, she deserves it. She played more aggressive and was going for her shots.

She was pretty bad in the 2nd and 3rd sets but expected as she's had so little match play. Great win. She needs to up her consistency in order to make the 3rd round. I think she can do it though. Espn showed every match but this one :o.

6-2 3-3 was great tennis from jelena.

6-2 3-3 to 6-2 3-6 was just awful from jelena.

final set to 4-1 was ok, decent, tamira not doing much at all, just getting the ball back.

then 4-1 to 6-4 was so painful.

UGH.

Just happy Jelena got a win at GS!! :hearts: :D

Why are you such a hater? Yeah Tamira didn't play that well, especially in the 1st set. But Jelena was the one making the errors. She needs more match play and she can definitely be top 50 again.

It was indeed a shitty match, but Jelena could barely stand up she was so nervous.

If she had played today like she had against Mauresmo it would have ended 6-1 6-1.

So, so happy for Jelena. She could have fallen apart completely at the end, but she held tough and really deserved this win. It must feel great for her.

Tamira, on the other hand, is a pathetic cow. Her fake injury was laughable, and it only seemed to come up when she was struggling. I simply can't stand her.

Jelena!:hearts:

She owned the first set, then she went completely off the boil in the 2nd set when things did not go as smoothly for her.

Picked up her game in the 3rd, although streaky at times. Huge improvement on her serve from the Mauresmo match but she still needs to be careful about her service games when she starts to miss a little. It seems as though one miss of a serve causes her to have an entire service game of aweful serves.:o

Great to see her win a GS match, and now she should put herself back to the ranking she had before her Hobart points came off this year (roughly #150). She's got nothing to lose now and definitely has a shot vs either Keothavong or Chakvetadze.

Another three set 1R loss for Tamira. Oh well, she's a bitch anyway.

Go on, Dokic.

Who's up next for her?

Ackms421
Jan 19th, 2009, 05:48 AM
Yeah, as mentioned, Dokic played MUCH better against Mauresmo, so we know she has more than she showed today. The good news is she won despite mediocre play and is up around #160 now!!!

If she sharpens up just a little, she has a great shot to win a few more rounds.

I'm a fan of Tamira and it pisses me off to see her playing sooo bad. It wouldn't have mattered who she would have played, I would still feel the same, it has nothing to do with Dokic. Jelena fully deserves her win, but I hardly think this indicates a great comeback 2bh. If I'm proven wrong then fine, but I'm entitled to my opinion!

Nice to see that Jelena's hard work paid.It must mean a lot for her.
As for Tamira, I just saw the last two sets and her serve is still a joke but what is worrying is that her game simply disappeared. She was just keeping the ball in play (well when she was able to do so :o )and was so passive.Needs A LOT of work.

ninanina19
Jan 19th, 2009, 05:51 AM
Jelena played really badly for a lot of it though. I think it's because she was nervous. Hopefully she plays better next round.

Next is : Anna Chakvetadze or Anne Keothavong.

Either one would do. It's risky though to think. It's like 55/45 to Chakvetadze. Weird match coming up- but its a good draw. 3rd round would be satisfactory for a comeback.

:worship:She didn't play good, but that's only because she needs more matches on the WTA level. Playing a GS match after few years of absence in front of her home crowd is not a small thing. She did it! A win in a GS match! And as she said-she has nothing to lose in the second round match. She is already a winner! She only needs more matches in the WTA level and the confidence will come by itself. Nice feeling to see her on Eurosport. I remember the indoor season 2001 in autumn, when they televised all her matches. Those were the days... BRAVO JELENA! SRBIJA TE BODRI!!! :hearts:

Jelena played like shit from the second set onwards, but that's hardly the point. She overcame a huge mental hurdle by winning a grand slam match again after all these years. I hope she reaches the point where winning matches is no longer a big deal anymore, and that will come in time. Her serve, erratic as it is, really helped her out today.

After all this I'm pretty confident that there will be no more Houdini acts, but if Jelena wins one more match this week it would be amazing and would give her fans some security finally.

I liked what I saw from Jelena. Her shots are still hard and flat and she hit some amazing angles. She needs to get the kinks out of her first serve and start getting it in more. She did have 10 or 11 aces. Jelena was so nervous after the girls fake injury time out. She started to look at the score instead of playing her game. I was so nervous for Jelena, and yet i got the sense that she wouldn't lose. I think she'll let it rip next rd and be more relaxed. The first rd jitters are no joke and ALL players have them. Yet for Jelena it was that and then some. Playing at home and making her comeback.

Jelena is still a work in progess. She was probably nervous as hell and hey she served pretty well despite the unforced errors. She made things happen and she is in the second round of Slam for the first time in years.

6-2 3-3 was great tennis from jelena.

6-2 3-3 to 6-2 3-6 was just awful from jelena.

Yes i know 6-2 till 2-1 in second set was decent...but her groundstrokes started to be hit and miss, some awful misses that went out by a metre!!

i was sitting at the back of the court fairly high up to stay in the shade, it was a stinker of a hot day and that might have affected them!

at the end jelena said in the interview on court she was nervous and the crowd helped her through...the crowd was 90% me :tape: i was going crazy every point she won, even clapped on some of the fault by her opponent...heck i even cheered and clapped when she used the line call system to win overrules...all the people around me were looking at me like WTF hes crazy

She started crying in the section I saw saying people didn't realise how much this means to her after all she has been through (referring to her family). I found it very touching.

IM soooo HAPPY! jelena got through it :)
Chakvetadze hasnt been playing her best lately, DOKIC FTW!
Does faster or slower suit jelena better?
Maybe a night match, slower court speed at night, with give her time to place her shots.
GO DOKIC!

She regrouped nicely after imploding halfway through the second set.

Tamira on the other hand :o. Wasn't impressed with her at all. With more matches under her belt I'm sure she'll get better.

I didn't actually go and see this match, after the Groth match i went and checked the bigs creen to see how she was going, she was serving for the match, i was certain she was going to choke. Well Done Jelena, hopefully this gives her a lot of confidence in the next round.

Possibly the worst quality match ever to grace the Vodafone arena (or whatever it is called these days). Tamira has shown no sign of improvement since last season what so ever, the serve in particular is shocking. Dokic fans (I know its hard not to, but) I wouldn't read too much into this

 Not a fan, but this is HUGE for Jelena, good quality or not

Welcome back Jelena. This is exactly what she needed.

 Pays off all her hard work and mental struggling of the past years. This should give motivation and confidence. Curious how she can handle with Chakvetadze. She'll probably lose but she could have a shot :)

You are. It's just that from you comments in the other thread it seemed like you hated her for no reason. Yeah, Jelena played badly today, but at least she's in to the 2nd round.

I'm guessing you mean this http://www.tennisforum.com/showpost.php?p=14783388&postcount=38

I can see where you are coming from, but I was actually just making a prediction (which ended up being 100% correct)
The deluded comment was to those Dokic fans who think that she would deliver a beatdown to Tamira and would be back in the top 20 by the end of the year.
But no I am not a hater of Dokic. She faces Chaky in the next round (who I am an official hater of) so I will be backing Dokic all the way!

why don't you focus you jut focus on all the Brits in the maindraw? Oh, i know why :tape:

Oh thats right, I forgot that because I'm British I'm not allowed to have other favourites. Silly me

i couldn't have guessed that watching dokic beat gagliardi at us open 2003 would be jelena's last grand slam win until 2009, which is why it means so much to her and her fans. she has a shot at 3rd round, as she has a better game than chakvetadze

This was my first ever live match of Jelena Dokic that I watched. I wasn't so into tennis until after she started having her problems. I must say though, I was expecting her to be awful, and the way she played with such poise (except maybe end of second set) was so amazing. It was like she never left before! She was playing with such experience. And the way she carried herself around the court was so admirable. She was so humble and appreciative of every bit of just being on the court out there. Jelena Dokic :worship:

Ok then, thanks for clearing that up :). We don't really think she will be top 20. Some of us were saying she was playing top 20 tennis against Mauresmo (which imo aside from the serve she definitely was). I voted Dokic in 2 just because I always like to do that, but I knew it would be tough. I really think Jelena can make top 50 though. It will take her the first half of the year to be more match fit and start winning at tour level but in the second half, I think she'll have some nice runs that will see her in the top 50.
