Melanie actually put up a good fight and should take a lot of positives from this match.

She started the match well, winning her first service game to love then having break points on Bartoli’s serve. It all went down hill from there however. Marion started striking the ball very well and Mel could barely hit the ball in court by the end of the set.

The second was a lot closer. Mel went through a purple patch 1-0 down, winning 4 games in a row, hitting some screaming winners that any top 10 player would be proud of. The winners turned into errors again after and Marion fought back well.

Winners/UE;
South - 18/34
Bartoli - 14/23

I think Melanie is a coaches dream. Everything is already in place. Great serve, powerful groundstroke’s, very motivated and decent volleys. She just needs to learn how to control her game, get fitter and work on the mental side. I think she is very worthy of a place in the top 100 which I am sure she will achieve this year.

Melanie South is completely useless...she does not deserve to be Top 100!

to lose a set from 1-4 to the biggest choker on the tour says a lot!...

anyways, at least i can take comfort in knowing it was Marion who beat her....anyone else and i would have been furious for days after...now i am only furious for an hour or so

you'd better take the title now, Marion!

From 4-1 up in the second set Mel just faded. She was playing so well in that set up till that point

First set was horrid from her though. Couldn't hit a first serve or a forehand at all after her first service game.

Mel should have got the 2nd set :o

Some good patches but too inconsistent. Maybe my standards were just too high after how amazingly she played at wimbledon, esp. Serving. Her serve wasn't anywhere as good. But it does look promising and if she can sort out her consistency (amazingly I thought she moved pretty well today) and mental side she can go far.

A) since when has Marion been the biggest choker on tour?
B) why is she completely useless? because she didn't take a set off a top 20 player?
C) What exactly were you expecting from Melanie today?

what the hell?! one moment I checked it was 4-1 for Mel and shortly after that Marion had taken that set and the match 6-2 6-4 :o anyway, congrats Marion.

Bartoli's a fighter. I've seen her retrieve 1-4 from another Brit, Keothavong to win the match.

Marion did what she had to in order to get a tricky first round out of the way. She doesnt have a great record at AO, so this is a good start.

She moved her opponent about the court when she had to, and seemed to get the points more often on her own serve when she took a bit of pace off.

Mel had some fine serves at times, but couldnt keep the ball in play. But she's did well to make the MD. it's been a positive stay for Mel down in Australia.

The brits are definitely very demanding and protective of their players. But you should expect this from a top 20 player against a recent top 100-er. Its' the mental game. She just wasn't ready.

Marion :woohoo: Glad that it seems last week's problem is done with.

Mel  She held her own well but Marion is in another league.

Sucks, Mel shudda wo. Bartoli needs to stop her ridiculous habits, theyre too weird.

C) What exactly were you expecting from Melanie today?

A) since like forever
B) because she was 4-1 up, and Marion's standard DID NOT increase, Melanie just hit loads of errors as per usual...
C) i was expecting at least a three-setter

C) i was expecting at least a three-setter

A) wow, you won me over with that intellectual response
B) when Mel won those 4 games in a row, she was playing some outstanding tennis. It is only natural for her level to dip, otherwise she would be a top 40 plyer by now. And Marion started to run down some balls after this point too, unlike before when she seemed to give up
C) I think you were the only person who thought this. I thought Mel would be lucky to win 4 games today

the comeback from 1-4 in the second was awesome ^^

South was better than i'd thought she'd be, but that isn't saying much because i thought she'd be abysmal.
