Hi.

Just got the new issue of Ace magazine which looks like it has taken ages to come out.

Not impressed with the new look issue; it appears it has done away with the results section - surely this issue should have had the tour championships round-up but doesn't.

Also does anyone know what they mean when they say its now Bi-Monthly. Is that twice a month or once every two months? Confused!

Thanks!

Bi-monthly can mean either, but since on their website it says the new is issue is January/Feburary i'm assuming it's going to be one every two months.

This might be better, because when I bought it a cuple years ago (as a monthly) they never seemed to have enough content to justify buying it. No idea why or if they have removed the results section though.

Jan/Feb has always been bi-monthly

This is the first issue published by Seven Squared, who won the contract at the end of last year (it used to be done by Advantage Publishing).

They must have done it quite fast to get it on sale already. I suppose you could always complain to the LTA if something you want there is missing.

Bi-monthly means that there would be a new issue out every other month :)

I'm so sad... Why is it every two months? Is it the damn 'credit crunch' again? I think you can easily fill a monthly tennis magazine with enough content... They're just not creative enough...

I don't like it at all. It looks cheap and trashy and the content is rather lacking. I'm not sure what they were aiming for with the changes.

I'm surprised everyones quite so hard on it. Although i agree i thinks its odd (and bad) that they got rid of the results section i do like how its concentrated a bit more on the british side of things with the Borwell column etc. Actually think content wish its a bit better than before.

I haven't seen an issue since i stopped getting it free....

I always always annoyed by its content. Too much of it was "where can u play tennis when you are on holiday" and too many articles about clothes and shoes I never would consider buying. . . only a handful of pages were relevant to me (news, results and interviews). What was that weird thing they decided to do - interview some merchant banker or lawyer every month cos he plays tennis on a saturday? wtf?

The other month they had a full page interview with Michelle Gayle (?!)

i still get 2 free copies a month for my tennis club, so keep one for myself lol, so seen as im not paying i don't really mind what its like. i get so many shitty mags for the tennis club free, one called tennislife magazine, the little british tennis magazine, ace magazine and so many stupid mail order sports booklets.

the tennislife was is funny sometimes, they had an article which tried to convince people serenas success was down to the colour outfit she wore lmao. or the article on scoring tennis where you win a point for a good idea or being dressed better.

The failed singer/Ex-Eastender?! What the hell. I read it in Borders and it looked boring. It did have an article claiming British tennis doesn't suck anymore :help:

Well I certainly won't be resubscribing, now that they've dropped the separate "British tennis" magazine which used to come with it. IMHO, by far the best tennis magazine is the French one simply called "Tennis magazine" which has far more interesting content in than Ace (far more results, tournament reports etc).
Oddly enough, unless you're a member of British tennis (which I am currently, which but probably won't continue as much worse value than the old LTA advantage scheme), it costs £30 to subscribe (£19 / month for British tennis members), yet it only costs £3.50 per issue to buy in the shops (making it £9 more expensive to subscribe). Clearly they can't do maths there!

OMG! I bought that issue of Tennislife! After that I never bought another issue... :o:lol: It was so crappy! The content, the style, the format! Just everything!

But no wonder Ace Magazine is becoming bi-monthly. Even the most devoted and hard-core tennis fans aren't buying it! As a tennis fan, I almost felt obliged to buy it... even though some of its articles were pretty bad and half of the mag was advertisements. I prefer the older design... it's just more classy but the quality and quantity of articles has definitely improved!

On the old LTA membership you used to get Ace and British Tennis as part of your subscription. When they changed everything this year Ace got charged as an add-on but the discount you got was something like 12 issues for the price of 11 which was hardly worth it. I figured if I see an issue I really like the look of in the shop I'll buy it but I'm not forking out almost full price for committing to a subscription when every other magazine offers a decent discount.

Unfortunately since Ace is affiliated to the LTA I always felt they could never offer a truly independent viewpoint on tennis stories. Anything which threw the LTA into a bad light was never mentioned. e.g the story about the British juniors boasting on the internet about getting drunk and eating pizza made the BBC news but not a hint of it in Ace.

i used to buy it a few years ago but like others have said, most of it is irrelevant and quite shit tbh

I quite enjoy the magazine but sometimes the phrase 'all style and no substance' springs to mind. The designers seemed to have tried too hard and I find some pages are too busy, then this is followed by about 50-pages of things I'm not interested in! Personally, I'm more interested in the content, rather than the designs but having said that, they do have some good features (e.g. the Borwell bit.)

I guess they have downgraded the results section because if it's now a bi-monthly magazine, there's no point writing loads about events which happened six-weeks before the magazine is released...

I was also surprised that in the 'biggest choke list', they didn't include Murray v. Gasquet. Not only did he serve for it at 5-4 in the third set, most of the British media think Murray is God's gift to tennis so I thought they would have included a Murray outcome, even if it wasn't a choke!
