FASTER MOVEMENTS IN THE TOP 10, 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200:

TOP 10: NO CHANGE

TOP 20: NO CHANGE

TOP 50:
Petra KVITOVA n°40 (+9): After a breakthrough season in 2008 where she rose from more than 100 to finish in the Top 50…Petra keeps the momentum, starting 2009 with her ever 1rst WTA Title at Hobart $220K. First, she ousted 7th seed/n°34 Alona Bondarenko, then she survived from a nearly loss against teen sensation Pavlyuchenkova before crushing her opponents in SF and Final for a all Czech fight against elegant n°41 Benesova. Petra is without contest, one of the girl to follow in 2009 with her perfect flat grounstrokes from both sides. With her victory at Hobart, she’s also reaching her highest ranking and becoming a Top 40 elite.

TOP 100:
Melinda CZINK n°89 (+11): Good start of season for Melinda, who finished 2008 just outside the Top 100 (n°103). After a 2nd rd as a qualifier at Brisbane, she did even better this week reaching the QF at Hobart. In the qualies she ousted 7th seed/n°77 Gallovits, then she kept going full of confidence to beat n°52 always dangerous Garbin en route before falling to n°57 Rybarikova. Even if Melinda should be satisfied, maybe she felt a little bit frustrated not to be able to go further as she lost 7/6 in the 3rd set in QF.

TOP 150:
Urszula RADWANSKA n°118 (+9): It should be hard for a teenage to rise in the shadow of a elder sister who’s already a tennis star. A lot of people are expecting so much from Urszula, and the press is not always kind as Urszula has a slower improvement than Agnieszka (at the same age Agnieszka wall already breaking the Top 50). However, Urszula is still very young, turned 18 in december, and step by step she’s closer from the Top 100 reaching her highest ranking this week at n°118. The beginning of the season works pretty well for her as she made it to the 2nd rd as a qualifier at Hobart $220K. In the qualies, she upsetted Top seed/n°31 Schiavone in 2 sets en route. She kept battling in the MD ousting 6th seed/n°33 Wozniak before retiring in the 2nd rd…as AO qualies were approaching. Still, 2 Top 40 victories are good for the future.
