Amen!!!Perhaps Dinara just went a little overboard in choosing pink b/c she was trying to tell the guys that her tomboy days were behind her...and that she's ready to be courted in classic romantic fashion;).

As for her draw,we can only ask that it be reasonable in the first three rounds...which I believe it is.If a gal is looking for easy matchups in the Round of 16 and beyond, then it almost surely means that she's not Slam-winning caliber anyway....

Btw,I just LOVE the new thread title with the 'sheila'-Australia connection;it must've been created by a genius with a horny, active imagination:lol:

I'm afraid of Alla! She beat Masha, she almost beat Venus! she is tough opponent! :(

I'm not so sure. Didn't she injure herself at the end of last year against Kuznetsova. Since then I don't remeber her doing anything of note. I just looked at her activity on the WTA site and she lost against Vaidisova in Aukland and Camerin in Hobart. So she may not be in form.

Oh most definitely. I also find it funny that Bruce is aussie slang for man ;):)I wasn't aware of that, and I wonder what the Afghani term for 'lovely sheila' is:smooch:(P.K.)....

Btw,Tati is right that Kudryavtseva should be considered a better-than-average 1st Round foe.At her best,Dinara could crush her but Dina has been spotty by her own admission so far,and this is the first year that our sheila has had the pressure of being EXPECTED to do well at Slams....we'll soon see how she handles that

PersephoneDisco
Jan 18th, 2009, 01:01 PM
Farsi term not afghani (thats we what we call ourselves not the language).I think it's dokhtareh khoob or close enough ;)

I still have reservations over Dinara and I feel bad for feeling that when everyone else is rather optimistic. I guess it's due to all the articles calling her a dark horse for the title and it's just such an AMAZING, almost unbelievable idea that would just change everything!!! :bounce:

(3) Dinara Safina (RUS) vs. Alla Kudryavtseva (RUS) - Safina leads, 1-0
Considering these two compatriots - among 15 Russian women in the singles draw - are separated by just six months in age, it is perhaps surprising they've met just once before, at Los Angeles last year. And what a classic it was: Safina won the first set in a tie-break, lost the next set to love, but regrouped to take the match in yet another tie-break. Not long before, 'Marat's little sister' had emerged as the hottest player on the Tour, but Kudryavtseva had been making headlines of her own, ruthlessly dispatching Maria Sharapova from the second round of Wimbledon - then dissing the former champion's dress sense. The lesson is clear: Kudryavtseva, now ranked No.70 in the world, is not one to be intimidated. Safina showed flashes of brilliance in the final against Elena Dementieva in Sydney on Friday night, but sprayed plenty of balls as well. She'll have to stay focused from start till finish today.

You have to take her seriously for sure. But it's not that she is the very strong opponent Dinara should struggle with a lot as long as she is playing well and doesn't make so many UE. (and Masha already played with a tear in her shoulder when she lost to her ;))

Nice draw. :) I'm sick so i can watch some of the matches. :)

well, depends on what style do you like more.
it's not an easy thing. If the opponent agressive, hit hard and steady, this passive pusher style will be dangerous for Dina, because of her movement and defense not so good. but Alla made way too many errors, thankfuly.
But if Dina's forehand or backhand doesn't working well, the first-strike ballbashing dangerous too, because she hit gazillion UEs. like in Sydney.

Cornet is next...I have no idea how this is going to be, haven't seen her play at the AO yet but she seems to be in great form. Probably going to be a tough one.

PersephoneDisco

Yeah I haven't seen Cornet play but she had a 3 set game and came through comfortably in the 3rd set. Dokic could well be Dina's QF opponent. Dokic seems to be less brittle mentally then Ana and she will have the crowd behind her.

Cornet was like a little rabbit, with some rocket in her back. :o i don't know who is faster, Dominika or Alize... but the key was Danka self-destruction mode. She played some amazing tennis in the 1st set, after that... just brainfarting as usual.

BACKGROUND

The tall, strong Russian had a tremendous May through September 2008 stretch, winning four titles and reaching the French Open and Olympics finals. The question for the ultra powerful 22-year-old is not how much she wants it – she doesn’t quit on herself any more – but whether she can overcome her nerves at the business end of a tournament. So far, she’s only shown that ability outside of the majors. It's up to Safina to prove that she can go one better.
Cornet is just one more excellent player to come out of France, joining what is now a long list of current top 40 players that includes top-10ers Jo Tsonga and Gilles Simons, as well as 2007 Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli. The 19-year-old has an effervescent personality and ended 2008 ranked No.16 and won her first career title in Budapest.

CURRENT FORM

Some decent play at the Hopman Cup was followed up by much better form in Sydney, where she went down to Elena Dementieva in the final. After that loss, she called herself “stupid.” Here, she’s played smarter and more aggressively, getting through a tricky match against Elena Makarova and then blowing Kaia Kanepi’s doors off.
The Frenchwoman reached the quarters of Sydney, falling to none other than Safina, and last year, also reached the final of Tier I Rome and Acapulco. She scored one of the most important victories of her career in knocking out Daniela Hantuchova in the third round in three sets, the same woman who had beaten her in her last two previous appearances at the Australian Open.

STRENGTH

Because she’s more fit, she’s better balanced, more patient and doesn’t tire as easily. Safina hits a heavy ball off both wings, has an excellent first serve and when she’s determined to win, fights like fury, witness her performance at last year’s French Open where she fought off match points against Maria Sharapova and Dementieva en route to the final.
On the outside, she doesn’t appear to be incredibly powerful, but she has strong legs and arms and when she moves inside the court, she can crush the ball when taking the ball on the rise. She has terrific balance and speed.

TACTICS

Do what she did in Sydney, which is to stare down the teenager and tell her who is boss. Safina is an excellent attacking player, who by employing first strike tennis can immediately dictate off her serve and return. Her defense has improved, too, but she’s much more confident when she’s taking huge cuts at the ball. She has to do so here.
This is a dicey contest for the Frenchwoman, who rarely needs to trust her hands against Safina’s more powerful onslaught. She had to get the Russian moving, commit to long points and return serve extremely well. Cornet is behind the eight ball here as Safina is more physically imposing and experienced, but the Russian is prone to getting down on herself and if the teenager can hang in, she’ll certainly have a chance to pull off an upset.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

They played for the first time in Sydney, a 6-3 6-4 victory for Safina on a hot day, a match that Safina said was given to her and a contest that Cornet said the Russian seized from her.

 okay, let's work this out, which for the 3RD time are you being snubbed?, Where are the 'fans' coming from? are you sat at the front? Are the bandwagon 'fans' just being mean and you're being too nice and polite?

I'm leaning towards Lyra's reasoning that the more rowdier the crowd the more concentrated she will be. The main issue is how to maintain her lead... Krajan needs to perk her up a bit and she should be fine! :yeah:

^ Loves Amy Sedaris. :hearts: She's awesome.

If Dina can control her errors, she might be able to win. She needs to stop ball bashing too much though.

I swear I'm the only Brit that gets her! Gotta love the holy trinity of Dinello,Sedaris and Colbert :yeah:

The only thing that seems to seperate Dokic and Safina from my mind is that Dokic has real belief. Safina needs to stamp her authority over the crowd and Dokic....good luck Dina :help:
