At least 32. So maybe not as bad as you may think.
Lost the last 2 against Errani and I don't like her at all.
I hoped for Kuzy in round 3 but it's Zvonareva.
If Vera is healthy, I see no chance for Maria.

But first round 1. She never lost here the first round so please keep it that way.

Oh well Maria is just going to have to step it up. It's tough, from what I saw earlier this week it doesn't look good but that was her first match of the season and she was ill the previous week so I don't think thats the best thing to go by.. but Errani is in great form and leads the h2h 2-0 a qualifier would probably be a better first round for Maria but I don't see Sveta withdrawing.

Well Errani is a tough 1st round draw. But can we get things in perspective. This is a woman who has only ever won 2 matches in Grand Slam events. I always feel better about Makiri against a small opponent rather than a ballbasher.

She won't give it away, so Maria has to play really well and smart. Gotta be aggressive and construct the points wisely. Maria won't beat her in consistency as we have seen before. Please put this match on a TV court :)

Unlucky for Errani?

From what I've seen Makiri does lack depth at times with her groundstrokes, particularly when she's struggling. Better to go down all guns blazing than remain passive.

Not trying to be a pesimist but if Maria plays like usual she is screwed. Kirilenko is a good doubles player and if her opponent has a tendency to hit short we need to see some old school kirilenko. A la come to net as much as possible and on crucial points dont go into a pusher mind set which i know is difficult to do.Btw i think it hilarious u got ur ipod signed. at a basketball camp i went to i had steve blake (nba player) sign a baseball 2 years in a row. hope she can get some wins.

Maria and Flavia are seeded seventh in doubles and have a pretty good draw :hearts:

(7) Kirilenko/Pennetta vs Dekmeijere/Wozniak
Moore/Ferguson vs Ketohavong/Jugic-Salkic
Peer/Wozniacki vs Kudryavtseva/Makarova
(12) Dellacqua/Schiavone vs Cetkovska/Suarez Navarro

The Bondarenkos (who they've beaten before) are in their quarter ;)

Rod the Bama
Jan 18th, 2009, 04:53 AM
It doesn`t an exact time. Usually it will start at least a half hour to 45 minutes after the previous match. Makiri will be playing the third match on Court 13. So it should be something about 2-3 in the afternoon down under.

As for the doubles draw, i like Makiri and Flavia`s draw. Hopefully they`ll go on a nice run.

In fact i really hope that Makiri will do well in Melbourne.

Tough draw for Maria. If she happens to beat Errani, she presumably plays Niculescu who she struggled quite a bit with last time, losing sets 2 & 3 6-2 and 6-1. I suppose just beating Errani would be a pretty good accomplishment.

Good luck Maria. :)

I just don't know what to say :o

Ever since Eric decided clay was going to be her best surface, she's forgotten how to play tennis.

But I'm optimistic about the doubles.
This may be true. I thought Eric Van Harpen would be a great coach for Maria. But he hasn't helped her game grow like I thought it would. And Masha getting dominated by the likes of Kleibanova and Errani to start 2009 is frightening to me. :scared: That should not be happening. Now Masha's ranking will drop as will her confidence. What a shame. :(

Also Masha is now approaching middle age for a WTA player and I wonder if she can improve in the future. I have my doubts. I have been a tennis fan for a long time and I never remember a player who has suffered as many crushing losses and heartbreaking losses as Maria. :bigcry: Not even Anna Kournikova. What makes Makiri's stuggles so frustrating is that she has very nice tennis skills and she should be a better player than she is. :banghead: She is a good tennis player but should be even better and more consistent. And the fact that Masha is so likable makes her tough losses and hard times even harder to take.

How did she play? and what was the problem? :tape:I think i was like the alternative to u, cheering madly for Maria and wat not  i made a 1 or 2 min vid of her warm up (i cant upload & post it just i cant find the stupid CD i need to make my camera work on my comp :( ).

omfg, where do i start with her singles match on monday? the chair umpire was blind as a bat! quite a few balls (about 6 or 7) were inside the line or just clipped it or on the other hand a bit out and the chair umpire called it IN! or out if it jus clipped the line. plus the ballkids werent much help either, especially one ballkid couldnt catch/stop the ball from rolling past them! and they were taking a bit longer than necessary to catch the ball and return to their ballkid spot. the couple of balls they couldnt stop wasnt rolling fast or anything  AND i think it was during the first couple of games of the 2nd set where Maria asked the ump to tell the ball kids to not mix the new balls with the match/already used balls and do u know wat happened? they mixed them up :o

i also saw the remarkable dubs match today with pennetta. i seriously thought they were gonna lose in straight sets. again i made a couple of vids of maria warming up and one of the match i think along with some pics. i also saw maria and flavia practicing together (got some vids and heaps of pics) AND i got a pic with maria afterwards! :bounce: but im NOT posting it coz i look soo retarded  but the blonde in the pic looks gorgeous, as usual

^ lol, well basically she was playing really well in the few few games of the 1st set. errani wasnt playing all that well imo. not saying maria wasnt playing very badly, just that *shrugs* im not 100% sure but i think the umpire's decisions about the line-calls got to her a bit, lingered in her mind a bit i reckon. then the first couple of games of the 2nd set maria played well, and then sara took a medical time-out (either thigh, buttock or hammy) coz her upper thigh was strapped. it was like 7 or 8 mins until errani came back. i think maria lost a bit of her mojo in that time

once again the umpire's decision not to over rule was bad imo. dubs match? overall the 1st set was average i spose. the 2nd set was good and then 3rd was even better :) maria played a few remarkable, not easy shots imo. few drop shots and a couple of slices and 2 (i think) aces. an old pervy man (who i actually thought was a medico lol) said that maria's serves were very wide, i jus nodded and continued to loudly cheer for maria. first i shouted "Allez" or "Alles Maria" but then the guy sitting next to me told me it was french not russian. so then i just shouted "go maria!" and "C'mon maria!" with a "vamos!" every now and then :p hehe

omfg, where do i start with her singles match on monday? the chair umpire was blind as a bat! quite a few balls (about 6 or 7) were inside the line or just clipped it or on the other hand a bit out and the chair umpire called it IN! or out if it jus clipped the line. plus the ballkids werent much help either, especially one ballkid couldnt catch/stop the ball from rolling past them! and they were taking a bit longer than necessary to catch the ball and return to their ballkid spot. the couple of balls they couldnt stop wasnt rolling fast or anything  AND i think it was during the first couple of games of the 2nd set where Maria asked the ump to tell the ball kids to not mix the new balls with the match/already used balls and do u know wat happened? they mixed them up :o

i also saw the remarkable dubs match today with pennetta. i seriously thought they were gonna lose in straight sets. again i made a couple of vids of maria warming up and one of the match i think along with some pics. i also saw maria and flavia practicing together (got some vids and heaps of pics) AND i got a pic with maria afterwards! :bounce: but im NOT posting it coz i look soo retarded  but the blonde in the pic looks gorgeous, as usual

In the end makiri has to cope with whatever happens during the match. If the ballboys were useless it wa the same for Errani. Good result in the doubles. Bit of a worry to drop the 1st set, but at least that's given Kirinetta more playing time together. Doesn't look like they had too many problems in the second and third. Good to see they are playing a full 3rd set aswell for the Grand Slam Event.

3 sets? Wasn't this supposed to be easy matchup?

It was Maria and Flavia who pushed Black/Huber late last season a couple of times, I wouldn't count them out from being a legit title contender

Well,it was their 1st match together for a long time,so a 1st set like that is understandable. They managed to win easily the other sets,so they're ready to fight now :)

Do you actually think they have a chance against Williams sisters?

Because there hasn't been much positive in her tennis career lately. So far there are no signs that she can turn it around.

Its only the start of the year....

I wasn't even talking about singles, she and Flavia won there first doubles match and your questioning them losing a set. :o

I'm watching Igor right now, yet to see her.. but I wouldn't be surprised if she were watching.

I watched the last 15 or 20 mins of Maria's practice session today. everytime i see her i wanna hug her tightly, never let go and kiss her  im not gay but i'd definitely turn gay for Maria even if it was just for one night, haha. there were quite a few pervy guys at her practice session today, she gave one of them the towel that she used, i wanted it :sobbing: lol.

i got my 4th Maria autograph today, i was trying to think of something for her to sign for me - she signed my ipod and program at the qualies (sat 17th jan) and she signed my "ALLEZ MARIA" sign when she lost her singles match. but she signed my tennis ball that i found on the ground this morning  i recorded bits of her praccie sess too.

oh and she was wearing see-though white shorts so im def sure that lead to most of the pervy guys there watching her. i was like the ONLY girl watching her train, LOL.

No use in being so negative. Yes, this is disappointing but Maria was unlucky with the draw like the tournament before. She wasn't 100% and tried to play.

Flavia looked really out of sorts today seems to have an injury too :awww: hope she'll be okay to play doubles still. Would not be a nice birthday present for Masha if they had to withdraw.

I think Maria's doubles match may be on Rod Laver tomorrow night.

I made a thread for Maria's birthday in GM if anyone wants to post. http://www.tennisforum.com/showthread.php?t=368287

Why would a doubles match other than the final be on Rod Laver Arena?

How is Flavia's injury?

Just posted there. :)

I'm not sure about Flavia's injury, but she still ended up playing mixed yesterday.

Well that sucks, but I should have guessed ATP always gets priority. I thought maybe since Casey was playing it would be on a bigger court. Court 2 is okay though it should be on TV.

I just saw on the official Australian Open site that Makiri`s doubles is a walkover with Dellacqua and Schiavone winning it. It`s likely that Flavia wasn`t able to go due to her foot injury. This really sucks that this has to happen on Makiri`s birthday. Oh well it`s on to the next tournament, where i hope Makiri will give a much better showing.

Well Flavia's injury must have gotten worse...as she still ended up playing mixed doubles the other day. :(

ohh so thats wat happened. i had a bit of a feeling maria might've been injured and i was trying to think bak to all her matches and practice sessions to where maria might have injured herself. i was soooo looking forward to watching the dubs match. i sat right behind the players' chairs and as soon as i saw maria i would've leaned in as close as possible and called 'happy belated 22nd birthday for yesterday maria :D i dont really have anything to give u, so here *gives her present* they're tim tams, they're really nice with hot chocolate or milo'

i was literally running around asking all the info ppl wat they knew about the dubs match not being played, they couldnt tell me much. poor maria and flavia. i was sooo looking forward to a hantuchova-sugiyama V.S kirilenko-pennetta dubs match-up in the semi-final or something :worship:
