MARIA Sharapova has already announced that she won't be seen, Venus Williams doesn't want to be seen, and Jelena Jankovic sees the world as her stage. Ana Ivanovic, meanwhile, remains the contender everyone wants to see.

So was the scene at Melbourne Park yesterday, where three leading hopes for the Australian Open women's crown got their eyes in ahead of next Monday's start to the first grand slam of the year.

With Sharapova unable to shake a shoulder injury in time to defend her title, organisers praying for a withdrawal-scare-free week would have blanched at the news that world No. 1 Jankovic had shortened last week's Hong Kong hit-out citing a virus. Her presence on court two yesterday morning, sweating and scowling her way through a vigorous workout, was welcomed. A teensy hint of melodrama tends to follow Jankovic, the self-styled Serbian princess who rose to the top ranking by year's end despite not winning a major and reaching only one slam final, at the US Open. There were heavy sighs aplenty in yesterday's session, often directed at her Spanish coach, Ricardo Sanchez.

"Move, move," Sanchez implored his charge. There were hints that her health might not be as rude as she would like, with Jankovic panting heavily and sinking hands to knees several times during her 15-minute window in front of the cameras. A distressed Jankovic is hardly a novel sight; her last Melbourne outing, a semi-final loss to Sharapova last January, included a medical break and a bizarre post-match rant about the painkillers she was popping and how she didn't want to end up like Heath Ledger.

Yesterday's unease may have simply been down to working hard while throwing off an annoying bug, and Sanchez seemed unconcerned about anything beyond the fitness of her backhand and forehand.

"This important — many ball, many ball," he told an onlooker, before turning on Jankovic again and providing a theatrical demonstration of how she should be hitting through the ball, not up and over it. If Jankovic was taking notice, she hid it well.

Perhaps she was miffed at not getting first run on the main stage, where compatriot Ivanovic slugged it out alongside her Australian trainer Scott Byrnes.

The 2008 runner-up was all smiles, perhaps still thinking about the teenage ball boy who proposed to her in Queensland recently, although more likely happy to be back in a city she loves and over the dizziness and lethargy that forced her withdrawal from the Brisbane International.

Last season was a breakthrough for Ivanovic, who rose to No. 1 in the world after winning the French Open, but then had a spate of injuries that limited her preparation for the last two majors of the year and kept her out of the Beijing Olympics.

She is fit now and she appeared to relish hitting a ball over a net, over and over.

It's easy to smile when your life as a tennis pro is only five years old. Add another decade on the merry-go-round, and you might be moved to break off from your warm-up, call your nearest lackey, and order the removal of those pesky cameras that have come to watch you hit a ball.

When you've been playing as long as Venus Williams, it must be hard to see tennis as a game.

ok, so i've made jokes about Jelena's dramatic ways, but when it comes down to it, I've never been harsh to her like other people have, but I've had enough with this bitch. So her immune system shuts down, couple days later she goes out on court and starts practicing. On top of that, she's pretending to struggle in front of the camera during a practic session. Somebody give her an Oscar already.

I must reluctantly concur. I have gone from kind of liking JJ--she has a playing style that's not unlike Myskina, whom I adored and a ready wit--to being lukewarm to actively disliking her in the course of the last year.

Some of her fans will doubtless attack me on the grounds that she has pretty much turned my fave into her bitch (the only Top 10 player this alleged #1 can claim any sort of dominance over) but I was able to live with that with Nastya for years and years, so I'm not convinced that's ALL of it, though it may be more than I want to admit.

But the constant manufactured melodrama, the attempts at humor that just fall flat, what seems to me the need for attention--they just grate on me at this point.

I'm not going to stoop to being a hater and go into all the JJ threads and gloat when she loses or take cheap shots at her accomplishments--I've been a staunch defender of her #1 ranking ever since she took it over. But I'm certainly not a fan.

There. I've said my piece and I'm done with it. I will now get back to supporting the players I like.

Cheaters? Liars? Deceivers? Ummm, I think that's a little extreme. Tennis is a sport that we watch for entertainment value, at least some of us. JJ is a great addition to the tour, seeing as she is one of the very few top players that can force all-time greats like the Williams sisters to hit more than 5 shots in a rally, as opposed to most of the unforced-errors queens littering the top 20. I enjoy watching the Williams play Jankovic.
I think it's a little pathetic for us to lambast JJ for possibly exaggerating the flu. Who among us hasn't exaggerated an illness because we didn't feel like working on a particular day?
People take injury time outs and gamesmanship way too seriously.

I see, well you can probably include me in that group. But that has nothing to do with the fact that I'm a Williams-fan or that I dislike Jelena (because I don't dislike her, just find her a little grating at the moment); but it's to do with the fact that I, like a lot of Williams fans, am posting on GM a lot at the moment. i'm not saying there aren't others, i've just seen a main group of williams who are always in them, there were two threads that got alot of posts about fed's comments and another one about jelena's physique, and i'm not saying that what she is saying isn't complete bs sometimes.Well, I'm a Williams fan and I actually defended JJ in the Roger thread and I don't know about the physique thread.

I'm looking in all the threads and posting in most of them. I don't think many Williams-fans are making a special effort to go out of our way to "hate on" ( ) Jelena. We're simply here.

I think it's a variety of fans that bash JJ, not just Williams fans. I rarely bash JJ and I didn't post any comments in the recent threads about her. When I saw Lovefifteen's comment about why he liked JJ, for some reason I decided to post why I didn't really like her.

I can´t believe people are that stupid. Jankovic simply didn´t want to play that useless exhibition against Zheng, so she made up some excuse and told the organizers, that it is so bad she might not be able to play the Australian Open. Same crap as Serena and her ankle injury from Stuttgart that needed beach healing.

Nice post. (all except for the #1 part, ;) )

being white has nothing to do with it  neither of those players have solid head-to-heads with both...so while they might be better at beating one, they usually struggle with the other (jj is leading venus but has just lost the last two big matches to serena in Miami and US Open so serena leads 5-3?), so that throws that theory out the window...and you act like most williams fans are black....error...you act like most williams fans dislike white players/divas...error...

facts: there are williams fans who *shock and wonder* like jj; there are some williams fans who like maria; there are some williams fans who like sveta (insert any other white/european girl who can give either sister trouble)...

But you said white because race is very important to you and because you are a racist. when I see these players the first thing I think of is great backhand, great serve, great movement, etc not the color of their skin. but obviously skin color is the most important factor to you seeing as you brought it up in a sentence that didn't need the qualifier of white in it to make sense.

And anyways Henin doesn't wait for errors, doesn't suck, was in better physical shape than both sisters in 2007 and has a great serve that she used as a weapon. So she doesn't fit in with Hingis and Jankovic at all. The only thing all 3 have in common is that they are white. JJ and Hingis are "weak", Hingis and Henin are "short" (JJ is actually as tall as Serena so ). But I guess the most important thing to you is that they are white and had a even or winning H2H against one of the WS.

So what have we learned from this thread?

LoveFifteen= racist and only loves white players that can beat black players cuz apparently skin color is the most important adjective when describing a player.

These threads keep popping up b/c she's always saying something or doing something ridiculous.

I understand the fact that she can be annoying for some (even for some of her fans at times, but isn't it the case for any other player ?).Really.

That being said, she brings fans (denying it would be ridiculous) and entertainment to the tour.GM (haters like fans)spent the past six months to speak about her mostly (despite the sisters wins in slams, the OG etc...).She brings something else.
Who are the top players with personality ? We have not so many of them that we can afford to spit on Jelena everytime she opens her mouth or the media use her to sell some stuff imo.
When she'll be as politically correct and nice and all as say Ana (no offense to her fans)you'll see the same people who are scrutinizing every move parole from her say that she's now boring. Is that what people want ?

Talking about personalities there are a lot of things that annoy me in Serena's off court personality but I'm able to admit that she brings something to the tour on and off the court (just for teh example).
What is happening for Jelena is that she's hated for the sole purpose of hating her most of the time. Most of the haters are Williams fans and they whine about things that we could esealy attribute to the sisters (dubious injuries being one of them but we could talk about Serena and the drama concept etc...).So, I don't see the logic in it sorry (and it makes me believe lovefifteen when he says that the main problem for these people is the fact that Jelena is a threat for their faves).

You sound like a Jelena fan. Serena is annoying, but at the same time, she's not lying, constantly complaining, etc.

What new fans is JJ bringing in by everything that is surrounding her? Is a non-fan going to tune in because they read online about a slamless #1? GM is not like the rest of the sports world. Having a personality is one thing... being annoying is another. People on here complain about ridiculous things all the time(Ana's squeaky shoes for example), but these kind of things have happpened over and over and over again to the point where it's not like it's something small or uncharacteristic of her.

To a fan, obviously these things arent going to bother you as much. However, to any objective viewer, this is getting out of control. Have you seen any non-JJ fans that aren't annoyed by this? And who is JJ a huge threat to aside from Venus? You can't complain about Serena fans b/c JJ is not more of a threat to Serena than anyone else. A lot of Venus/Serena fans actually liked Jelena. I, and many others, had a huge amount of respect for her.

Anyway, I'm sure this is not the last of this. You may think it's good for the sport... I think it's not.

I think it's not.

lol Sorry but yes she's.

mmm People outside wtaw(casual followers of tennis)just enjoy Jelena the entertainer (they're not even aware about all this "overdramatic queen" stuff).People at the USO final appreciated her, despite the fact that she was playing Serena on her home soil.
And sorry, but yes Jelena is more a threat to the sisters than probably any active player : she is 3-4 against Serena, 5-4 against Venus.Which other active has better h2h with the sisters than her ?

Even if I like Jelena (and no I don't think I act like a "fan", I have not really the fan mentality in me, not even for players I like a lot)I can be objective : she is a positive thing to the tour.Btw, you didn't answer, who are the others top players with some personality ?

Provide examples otherwise retract your baseless assertions.

That's the problem with so many are full of it, full of themselves, but they have no substance or facts to back what they say.

Provide one instance of a lie. If you think she complains and whores media attention a lot that's far more subjective, but you need to come up with something.

Aside from all of that other drivel. Is it me or is there a trend? Whenever there's a lot of hating on the boards, the WS fans always get blamed for all the hating. Nevermind that scores of fans from other players are also raining down hate on her. This happened with Hingis, JCap, Sharapova, Henin, now JJ.

Are the WS fans just convenient scapegoats?

I just love how such a diverse, eclectic and interesting group of people get lumped together as "Williams Sister fans".

It's just very poor terminology which belies the fact that people haven't thought about in depth, what they're acutally talking about.

We saw Serena complaining about ankles injuries but moving her ass two days after on the dancefloor with the like as Lil Kim or Paris. We saw her (not so long ago) withdrawing from a tournament after a tough loss claming yet another ankle injury.Few days after that she was surfing her way to the beach, walking on rocks etc...like nothing happened.
She withdrawn of Hopman Cup cause of an hamstring injury one month before the event (lol)while playing en exo at the same time. She supposedly had this harmstring injury since the YEC, but gave another reason when she quit at the YEC (:silly:).

I could go on and on but i don't think it's really necessary. It's part of her, she's like that.People can take the whole package, some others can appreciate her game but not so much her off court personality or how at times she acts towards the tour(like me)but still recognize that the tour needs players like her.
The same can be said about JJ imo (and it's why I post on it : there's a lot of hypocrisy behind all this hate, and I don't like hypocrits :)).
Denying than one of them brings something to the tour (and sometimes in the same way, it's maybe part of the problem for some)is just a total nonsense for me.Searching something to hate in every single word or move of one them is a waste of time and a hobby for the no-life.Neither will change and we should be grateful to have some players like them who can brings some game AND have personalities.
What JJ is receiving these days is just out of line imo.

First surprised this is still open:eek::lol: don't want to start a fight again but did you visit GM the first 6 months of 2008? where you were assured there would be a few anti Ana threads on the first page and during Roland Garros the bashing only intensified to crazy levels there were some Jankovic fans who posted [Sweet Cleo] not polite things [/Sweet Cleo] in those threads

Sorry to good fans like Optima but it's funny seeing the same Jankovic fans who couldn't wait to post in those Ana threads, now complaining all the Jankovic threads are unfair

ok, so i've made jokes about Jelena's dramatic ways, but when it comes down to it, I've never been harsh to her like other people have, but I've had enough with this bitch. So her immune system shuts down, couple days later she goes out on court and starts practicing. On top of that, she's pretending to struggle in front of the camera during a practic session. Somebody give her an Oscar already.

Why does everybody say this? I don't get it! She deserves a Razzie for her transparent, panto performances.

Imagine what it'd be if she was a real threat to the sisters (j/k);)

Honestly I have never been interested enough by Ana to enter those threads so I was certainly not one of the person who were bashing her and I couldn't tell if all that is true.Anyway, I'm not here to defend Jelena's fans.At the time, I'm sure you reacted and did something, just like some here are reacting to the hate vomited everyday on Jelena.
Besides that, there's a difference between battles of fans (which are fun most of the time)and what Jelena gets these days.I imagine JJ's fans could also enter every thread about Maria, Ana, Serena and Venus and make some very usefull comments about trannies or some doping methods but I'm glad they don't (and I don't see where is the fun in doing that).

Since it's a hot topic...

Ana was asked about JJ being Number 1 on a conference call the past night in Australia:

She defended Jankovic's position at the top of the rankings despite her compatriot having not yet won a grand slam.

"The world rankings take care of themselves," Ivanovic said. "Jelena is a great player who succeeds a lot and obviously any player can get to number one.

"It was a very, very close race for the number one position (at year end) and many players could have achieved it.

"So she deserves it."

I think we need a mature General Messages forum, simply because there are JJ fans, and WS fans and Ivanovic fans and whateber else fans that don't have the need to bash and attack others for their favorites.

And really, a Williams fan talking about disliking lying? I value the WS because we can agree they're legends, but come freaking on. Its obvious that most of their withdrawals are simply because they don't want to play

I'm not sure why Serena (and Venus) keep getting dragged into this thread. Serena, Venus and Jankovic and the TennisForum posters that are fans of these players are entirely separate entities.

Is Serena the measuring stick for everything now? Can people not make a simple statement or point without reference to Serena Williams?

The Jankovic and Serena comparisons need to stop. They are two completely different people, with different personalities at very different stages in their careers and lives.

Serena is a drama-queen; but Jelena has simply become over dramatic. There is a difference. Jelena gets press about withdrawing from tournies, but she doesn't actually withdraw. Serena does withdraw from tournaments, occasionally, because she is very injury prone. Serena had a surgery five years ago which ruined her career. She is a hypochondriac by necessity.

I'd goodrep you but I have to spread it around :(

Serena and Jelena are INCOMPARABLE. It's one thing to have injuries that fans don't believe in... whether Serena is injured or not.. WE DON'T KNOW. We do know that many of her ailments are legitimate though.

Serena does not say she's dying and then plays 4 straight tournaments.. Serena does not frequently take injury timeouts or whine on court. Serena does not constantly try to draw attention to herself.. she is a superstar on her own merit and accomplishments. JJ is not. She's an attention whore who constantly claims she's injured yet constantly has the most matches played on tour.

Is Serena the measuring stick for everything now? Can people not make a simple statement or point without reference to Serena Williams?

The Jankovic and Serena comparisons need to stop. They are two completely different people, with different personalities at very different stages in their careers and lives.

Brilliant posts by both :worship: I couldn't agree more :yeah:

I think we need a mature General Messages forum, simply because there are JJ fans, and WS fans and Ivanovic fans and whateber else fans that don't have the need to bash and attack others for their favorites.

And really, a Williams fan talking about disliking lying? I value the WS because we can agree they're legends, but come freaking on. Its obvious that most of their withdrawals are simply because they don't want to play

Exactly.

occasionally :haha:- she does it all the time. And she picks up more fines than anyone else because they are not for a verifiable bona-fide injury.

There certainly is a difference. Jelena gets injured at tournaments she plays in - in public. Unless you just make up your mind not to believe your eyes - we know it's genuine. For example - Hopman Cup she couldn't walk. It was seen. Olympics was on one leg to start with. It was seen. Her match against Caro - the precise moment she ran for an impossible shot and horribly picked up that Meniscus injury. That is a serious injury as anyone who has had iyt will tell you. The doctors told her not to play the next match - but she did (before she knew the full extent).

All I see with the sisters is they are always pulling out at the last moment. Very suspicious when it's after a bad loss and you see her surfing the next moment.

When comparing Jelena and the WS - one is genuinely injured but tries to always honour her comittments. The other pulls out at a drop of a hat for questionable reasons. And the one who honours her committments if at all possible is accused of lying here .

You definitely need to stop over-stating things.

The Hopman Cup last year involved the US beating Serbia in doubles and Jelena played that match, so it wasn't as if she couldn't walk. With regards to the Olympics, Jelena seemed perfectly fine and why wouldn't she be? She was fit. If she wasn't fit, then she wouldn't have played. Simple as really. And all this "honoring a committment" is rubbish; it's one thing to honor a committment but it's another to enter and play a tournament injured which is just plain stupid IMHO. Which again, leads me to believe that Jelena maybe wasn't injured or at the very least over-hyped her situations!

And you referenced "WS" i.e. The Williams Sisters, but you've only commented on Serena; need i remind you that the Williams aren't a package deal, they are two different people and Venus' name shouldn't be concerned when talking about withdrawals and questionnable injuries.

No. Some of what you state is simply not correct.

When was the last time Venus pulled out of a tournament? First thing you need to do is stop lumping Venus and Serena together. Perhaps this will help remedy your blanket statements. I want facts and figures please. Stop these sweeping generalisations, you're making yourself look stupid.

I can think of two tournaments Serena pulled out of last year. She was injured for both as far as I or you know. There were no pictures of Serena surfing, there is one picture of her standing on a surf board in the shallows. She went on holiday to recover from her injury? Gentle exercise aided her rehabilitation? Who knows? One shouldn't leap to conclusions.

Jelena is becoming a liar and an ostentatious enhibitionist, and you are, quite poorly I might add, defending her.

One should think before one posts. How is that leaping to a conclusion? "Becoming a liar" is certainly strong wording but she is. Saying she will pull out of the AO when she obviously isn't going to. That's called lying, my friend.

Also, most of the tennis world would agree she's an ostentatious exhibitionist, so I hardly think that's leaping to a conclusion either. It's pretty obvious to see in every match she plays.

It's funny, I've been forced to lay into her to defend my position from the people who can't rationalise an argument. Yet I actually don't mind her. I think the tour his definitely better off for having her. Jankovic's rivalry with Serena is my favourite current one along with Serena-Venus. I simply find her a bit much at the moment, and the situation seems to be deteriorating. I will point it out if I wish. I will defend my position if questioned. And I will defend Serena when she is unfairly dragged into a debate that has nothing whatsoever to do with her.

She didn't say she was going to pull out. She said she was in doubt. So it isn't really lying when she turns up after she said she was in doubt because being in doubt means you are unsure. Saying she is lying there is just an exaggeration. And how can you leap to the conclusion that she wasn't actually in doubt? Just because she may have over exaggerated some injuries before doesn't mean this one isn't as bad as she says it is. If you don't mind her then why wont you give her the benefit of the doubt?

Not to wish anyone ill, but the dramatics she pulls when she actually gets injured will be something, she'll prolly call a press conference from her death bed if she ever did maybe strain a wrist.

why bother trying queen de??

I'm just wondering how is it that non-fans get this information and those of us who are fans and follow Serena's every move haven't heard this.

As far as hingis-seles little comment about Serena fans, it can be applied to him/her as well with a favorite like Hingis. Not only is she a quitter because she couldn't compete any longer with the big hitters, but got drummed off the tour after her less than successful "comeback" for being a coke-head. Every player has stuff that can be said about them. Everybody does it and Serena fans have just as much right to do it as any other fanbase.

People have their preferences. Yes Serena is a drama queen, yes she lies and yes she withdraws from tourneys on a consistent basis, but she is a 9-time GS champion and she's No. 2 in the world on her way to taking the No. 1 again and no one can take that away from her. We love her and take her with her faults. Just as JJ fans love her with all her faults.

Some of us don't even like JJ, let alone love her and don't like her attitude on or off court which is why we criticise her. In other words, because she is not liked by certain fans, her faults are not accepted as you accept them. And, even though her lying, faking, drama can be applied to Serena as well, we as fans have every right to express those feelings about her, as some of you have expressed about Serena. Like Serena, she is not above criticism, especially since she's No. 1. It just goes with the territory, so get used to it. We have.

Saying she will pull out of the AO when she obviously isn't going to. That's called lying, my friend.

She didn't say she was going to pull out. She said she was in doubt.

:spit:

NO. She never said she was in doubt for AO either. It was the journalist who put that in the title of the article. She only said that due to her sickness she may not have the time to get ready for AO.

Thanks for that! I guess that was the purpose of Jelena-Serena comparison - to show obvious double standards of some members of this forum. I didn't bring up Serena in this thread, but I don't think it was uncalled for because most of the fans on this forum who are belittling JJ's achievements (no matter how poor they look compared to Serena's) are some Serena and Venus fans. No one can take away JJ's success of becoming #1 from her either, but I don't think that having that kind of achievement should be the main reason for supporting a player. I love both Jelena and Serena for their games AND personalities and maybe that's why it's hard for ME to understand posts of some Serena fans in these threads. You said it yourself - some (if not most) parts of their personalities are indeed similar. So, that leads some JJ fans to conclusion that the biggest reason for JJ hate is the fact that she has a good record against both WS.

Like Serena, she is not above criticism, especially since she's No. 1. It just goes with the territory, so get used to it. We have.

Amen! :worship:

So have we and I don't see JJ fans reacting to hate threads any differently than Serena fans. It's just that we can't bring up the multiple GS champion argument in her defense, but now we do have #1 ranking and the fact that our girl is the best (;)) goddamn player in the world to "annoy" other fanbases. As we can see, it brings lots of "fun" to these parts of the forum.

Why would JJ's record against Venus affect the Serena fans? (the true ones I mean, who support Serena for her, not for her sister too)

Why would anything bother anyone? :rolls:
Anyways, most (not all though) of the true fans of one sister support the other one as well.
And why wouldn't it? Both WS are true greats and the fact that Jelena matches up well against them obviously bothers some fans who are constantly trying to belittle JJ's game and achievemnets...
We all "know" that Serena and Venus or Venus and Serena are "true" #1 and #2 (the true #1 role clearly changes all the time between the two of them).
Why would the fact that Jelena is #1 bother anyone especially someone from those two fanbases when Jelena is nowhere near to becoming as great player as those two, even if she has a very good record against both?

you honestly think JJ is gonna be an all time great? lol hate to break it to you, but Jelena will be 24 in about a month, with nothing big to her name. she may eventually sneak out a grand slam, but that wont put her on the greats list....

Kim got one and while she was a good player with a ton of potential, she wont be remember in a few years except by her fans..... JJ will go the same way.

'..her last Melbourne outing, a semi-final loss to Sharapova last January, included a medical break and a bizarre post-match rant about the painkillers she was popping and how she didn't want to end up like Heath Ledger.'

If she did actually say this then she is a stupid cow for saying it in Australia, a stupid and crass cow for saying it at all, and an ignorant cow of the fact that if she was found dead she'd be lucky to make the back pages of International newspapers. Of course, she may not have said it, but if she did I hope she goes out in the
1st round and has a shit year ahead.

is that a recent pic of JJ? Minus the reebok logo i don't see much difference in her body or muscle tone...I did see a pic somewhere else where legs def. looked stronger. I thought she had a great body prior to her muscle tinkering, almost rivalling Steffi Graf.

She did say that, thats one of the reasons why I started hating her so much, Heath's death wasnt something she should have made fun of in the press

She did say that, thats one of the reasons why I started hating her so much, Heath's death wasnt something she should have made fun of in the pressI quite agree it should not and I am sure she did not intend to do that. JJ says crazy stuff and a lot of it is very funny and makes everyone laugh. This particular comment was not funny but I am glad she is brave enough to speak out rather than be bland like so many other great players.

I thought about starting a thread about whose body has changed the most since the 2008 AO, and would it affect their games. JJ? (up), Domachowska (down), Ivanovic (up slightly), Sharapova (unknown), and even Hantuchova (rejoicing over being 1 kilo up?). Golovin and Kirilenko have sports illustrated swimsuits to consider---

I will hide this post here to stay out of trouble, but I wondered if anyone has noticed there has been more talk about kilos and pounds, (all muscles, of course) this year.
