If you would be Urszula Radwanska:

- Try to win her 2nd round against Czink in Hobart and miss the AO Qualies

- Tank the match pack her baggs and try to qualify to AO

???

I'd tank and head for Melbourne!

She might as well try to make it far in Hobart. Odds are she won't even make it past 1st or 2nd round of AO anyways.

Odds are she won't beat Pennetta in QF and she is very likely to reach 2nd round of qualies.

The point gain from beating Czink will be less than winning one match in OZ qualies.

Dokic was in the same position last year. She tanked, obviously. 0-5 ret.

I would probably tank, but it is really unfair to Hobart. Wouldn't it be good if going far ("far" to be defined) in a tournament competing with Qualifying games could get a player MD. It certainly beats giving spots to lucky losers.

Very convincing well thought out argument. Obviously every player wants the excitement of playing in a Grand Slam. But one also needs to think of things like the practicalities of ranking points. But when even the ranking points argument favours going to the Australian Open then it becomes a pretty straight foward decision. Time for Ula to tank.

Every year, there is some major tankings in Hobart's 2nd roud matches.

So, she could beat Czink and then beg the organisers to put her on court at 10:30 against Pennetta and lose before 4pm :)

Why do players enter these events if they know they'll have to tank/withdraw if they win a match... am I missing something?

Jan 12th, 2009, 05:12 PM
Uh... why would I tank? I could just withdraw, and save people the expectation. At least this isn't a marquee match.

Isn't it EXACTLY the same situation for Melinda Czink?!!! Will this be a fight for who withdraws / retires first? ??

I still think this could have been a hysterical encounter if both players were in the same predicament. Tennis at it's most gruesome.

If she withdraws she will not be included in the entry list for AO qualies (stupid rule I know but thats how it is)

Like the famous soccer match where the team was trying to score on itself to move through to the next round.

(Only in CONCACAAF).
