:tape: top 500 is pushing it but it really does annoy me how highly rated she is and how little shes achieved to garner it.

were they adjusting to their new body as well?

Ummm, Nadia has flippin' viral meningitis (Viral ("aseptic") meningitis is serious but rarely fatal in persons with normal immune systems)
and Maria had the flu last week, so yah, you could say they are adjusting to being fairly ill?!!!

...and say what you will about Kirilenko, but i think she had a title or 2 by the time she was Klebanova's age. Besides, most of her rating and popularity is based on the fact that she's gorgeous.

its fact her exposure dosen't match her results, it is annoying there are a lot of girls out there that don't get the money or publicity kirilenko does yet are better players. do you honestly think kirilenkos game deserves the attention she gets?

Imo Kirilenko is not a bad player. She doesn't have the weapons or mental strength to be a consistent top 10 player but I don't think anyone except a few of her fans are saying she will be. Most of the hype surrounds her looks which are imo a bit overrated. However everyone has different tastes so it doesn't bother me that much but there isn't much hype around her game.

I am a male and I will admit that I like Maria and tend to think she is better than she is because of her looks. I think she is a good player, but unless she improves won't be top 10. Sometimes it's hard to remember that looks don't equal results.
EIther way, good win Alisa... get well soon, Maria.

Nice win for Kleybanova... Alisa certainly has the weapons to go far if everything else works out in her favour. Will be interesting to see if/how she progresses in 2009.

As for Kirilenko... she's not a big favourite of mine, but I think people seem to be intent on either over or underestimating her. She's never (as I see it, anyway) going to be a top 5 player, but she's clearly capable of stringing matches together often enough to carve out a respectable top 20 (possibly top 10 for a while) career. Her game is limited by a lack of big weaponry, but she doesn't have any glaring faults in her game and has more variety/finesse than most when she's making the right shot-making decisions. I guess I can see why fans of other players get frustrated that her looks bring her higher profile than her game, and thus higher profile than other players with more game. However, the tour needs players like Kirilenko because she brings interest, appeal and revenue. I say good luck to her, and if her fans enjoy her body as much as her tennis, good luck to them too ;)

Total overreaction from people here like usual, its the first match of the season for her FFS. :o

I was at this match and Maria can play 100 times better than what she did, she didn't play awful she was just a bit slow and sluggish and given its her first match of the season after withdrawing last week with a virus It's understandable. Kleybanova didn't impress me she's just a brainless ball basher, she bashed everything and almost all of them landed in or Maria couldn't handle them. Maria tried to change it up and play smart but it just wasn't working. Good luck in Melbourne Maria.

Kirilenko, may be overhyped d/t her looks, but i truely think she's got some game. She does have weapons and she will make the top 10.

She has a lot of shots and has a great feel at the net and for the ball. Her problem is mental and consistency. I don't think we should count her out yet, because Masha K has got some game. Maria can improve and use her arsenal to her advantage more with time. I like her game style. She's not your typical ball basher like Vaidisova. With her weapons and finesse, i think she can get to top 10.

I was at the the match and Maria didnt play great that was the first reason why she lost. She was making arrors at the wrong time and had some poor shot selection. The second reason why she lost was because she was being overpowered for most of the match.

I was at this match too! Where were u sitting?

I was sitting right next to the kirilenko camp, so it was interesting to hear their conversations.
Maria's coach was annoyed that Maria was 'pushing' the ball, and just 'hoping, hoping' that kleybanova would miss. He said she wouldn't win if she doesn't hit through the ball and get more depth. Often, she was looping the ball with a lot of height over the net but it landed short allowing kleybanova to attack. Maria's coach was annoyed that she wasn't attacking kleybanova's second serve and when she finally did he said to the other guy 'one time, finally, but only one time'.
He kept saying that Maria needs to hit to Alisa's forehand more often because 'her backhand is unbelievable, i don't know how she does it but she doesn't miss, it's unbelievable'.
He was also annoyed that Maria kept hitting to the middle of the court and didn't try and get Alisa on the run, because that is obviously her biggest weakness.

I thought Alisa played really well to be honest - she hits hard and flat and came up with some great great strokes. But i also thought she was playing quite smart and waiting for the proper one to pounce. Still cracking all her shots, but i thought she was trying to construct the points out there.

I guess Maria still has poor shot selection/decision making. I can imagine it'd annoy van Harpen more than it does us because he knows her true capabilities.

Starting with about 9 first round losses, (21/22 years of age, best ranking around 17/18) then almost retire. Win some matches again. Then 2 years later she will be Nr 1 with only making a GS final.
Yes Maria can do it.

Yeah after reading this I see what you mean, Maria seemed to be lacking power she was just pushing the ball back in court, And yeah I was quite annoyed at how Maria didn't try to make her run. I believe this could have something to do with her not being well last week she could be weak still. I saw where Maria's coach and father were sitting I was sitting on the opposite side.
