....Sharapova joins Lindsay Davenport (pregnant) and Nadia Petrova (viral meningitis) as high-profile absentees.

That's a big opps but trust the herald to get wrong one or the other. Let me put it this way the herald are more fiction than fact most of the time. Trust them to get it wrong.

Maybe Petrova is OK now, but she's planning on getting viral meningitis before the Australian Open?

That's a newspaper that doesn't follow tennis. She withdrew from Auckland, nothing else.
Very easy to check those facts, or even make a phone call, if they want to know who withdrew from the AO

^ This is the Herald Sun we're talking about. Fact checking? Don't make me laugh.

judging from the score in her match, maybe she should have waited untill after oz to start her season.

I think she would have entered Hobart if she knew she had to miss Auckland. The virus came while she was training for Auckland
But she still has doubles withSveta and a week to get ready for Melbourne

Cornet is not a slouch and will be seeded Top 16 at the Open. Nadya needs a good draw, a couple of easy matches, and then you never know..

Just like their Brisbane paper - The Courier Mail; and their Sydney paper - The Daily Telegraph. If you want serious news you never buy a News Ltd paper, a lot of their reporting is very one-sided and totally ignore facts in many cases; they're like a print version of Today Tonight. Their Aussies papers are just as bad as their British papers, which are world renowed for being basically a joke.
