What was Serena suppose to say?

I certainly wouldn't tell her what she was supposed to say. I wouldn't even presume there is an answer to that question. Infact if positions were reversed I don't suppose we would get a very different answer for Sharapova. Part of what makes a player a champion is that they are focused almost solely on themselves and their job and don't allow themselves to be distracted by things that don't concern them like the fitness of other players. Serena is a player who exemplifies that. But of course the same could be said about Sharapova or Henin or several others too.

For what it's worth I did not think you posted it to be controversial but more for information purpose. I think it got negative when someone responded with, well that sounds like Serena or something to that effect. I could be wrong but that's where most of the hostile, for lack of a better word, response came.

People always see things differently no matter the situation, depend on what they are looking for.

I think most of the top players can be a little less heartless in cases like this but it's hard to be nice, in competitive situation, if you are not particularly friendly with each other.

Anyway thanks for posting I appreciated hearing Serena's response.

I'm frankly tickled that the OP would think one of the first things on people's minds aside from Maria missing the Open and what could be the extent of her injury status is what Serena Williams thought of it all. You took the words out of my mouth. What did y'all expect her reaction to be? Serena couldn't care less about Maria's injury - she has a tournament to focus on this week. Unlike EVERYBODY ELSE Serena just worries about her; she doesn't waste time gossiping about other players and their business. Most of y'all who posted in this thread should follow her example - there would be less fights around here if we did.

Midnight_Robber
Jan 12th, 2009, 07:19 AM
I thought the whole point of this thread was to show that Serena could give a completely 'meh', wholly generic response to a potentially controversial question. And it did.

She didn't fawn over Maria - but nor did she bitch her out, and I'm glad that she wasn't all saccharine sweet and didn't pretend to care when she is clearly indifferent and has her own worries.

Honestly, what does Maria's shoulder have to do with her and why should she fall over herself about an injury when it's par for the course in their profession? Besides, plenty of other players get debilitating injuries, have had surgery etc. - including herself and her sister. What she supposed to do - weep blood over it? Why should she behave as it it's anything out of the ordinary or pretend at some depth of concern that she doesn't feel and play the hypocrite?

Besides, I've never heard Sharapova wish her opponent well, or muse about their injuries. So what about it?
