Wow what a match! :speakles: Match of the year for me. :worship: Both had some great moments and some average moments, overall it was really exciting.

Serena should have won it in 2 though, and some would say Stosur should have won the 3rd. Stosur missed 4 match points, 3 of them with consecutive double faults at 3-6 7-6 *5-4 40-0. :speakles:

The biggest drama was at 6-3 *6-5 30-30 when Serena's first serve CLEARLY hit the net, made a sound and the net chord even moved, yet the umpire completely missed it. It's like everyone was waiting for the obvious call of "Let, first service", but it never came. :(

Serena seemd to handle it very well initially, just took a deep breath and composed herself, but when she lost the game she did complain to the umpire, but to no avail. When she lost the tiebreak she complained again and looked pretty frustrated. And in the 3rd set she just seemed to go for broke until the close stages where she started to try a little more. Stosur played really well and stayed very composed and solid throughout the match- except for when she served for the match and missed break points for 6-5.

I thought Serena would have handled the let incident a lot better than she did, but she did very well to claw her way back into the match.

The crowd really got into it :)

:haha: Stosur choked so badly, it was pathetic to watch. Serena's attitude was also pathetic.

Stosur mishit the ball on her forehand about 20 feet up in the air at least 10 times like usual and Serena couldn't bring herself to get over a missed let call.

Sam

You know what though, I remember watching Sam at the Wimbledon Womens Doubles Final and thinking if she ever gets into a situation against a top player where she has a lead or is serving for the match she will CHOKE. Nevertheless a good way to start '09 for Sam.

Keadz
Jan 11th, 2009, 03:54 AM
Repeat of Sam's 2008 Wimbledon second round.

More like worst match, it was good until the third set. Sam brought back her choking mentality and Serena just went for anything at some points and then didn't try on other points. Sam couldn't and didn't have to do anything to get the lead. Then suddenly Serena starts trying and Sam has no rhythm what so ever. Chokes 4 match points, which was completely her fault with 2 double faults and an easy volley put away. Serena tries in the last two games..Sam plays like shit and it was all over.

I'am so gutted :sobbing: Golden opportunity for Sam there & yet she has to tense up & let it slip away from her fingers  But she really gave Serena (don't care whether she was rusty or not) a run for her money & I just hope this is another learning curve from Sam. Great effort from her

Congrats to Serena. She isn't a fighter for nothing. During the 3rd set at times she looked disinterested in the match imo - probably because of her frustration with that letcord in the 2nd set. She could of handled it a bit better, but hey maybe it fired her up deep down.

Jan 11th, 2009, 04:04 AM
The match was good for most of the first 2 sets, I was impressed with Rena's form. Then Serena looked anxious at 4-3 in the second set and that stupid let point at 6-5 pissed her off . Serena was fired up in the first game of the the 3rd and then she just didn't look like she cared, it was all errors smh. Sam did a good job to stay composed until MP, I was glad she choked lol. But I actually do want her to do well, so hopefully for her she will learn and have an easier draw at the AO.

I can understand why Serena was pissed off with the umpire but Rena should have it let go in the 3rd set.. I know she wanted to win in 2 sets but that type of attitude cost her grand slams last year!!
Also Serena needs to be careful not to shout out during points....

I like Serena, but disgusting performance from her. She's lucky Sam is a choker because Serena was basically handing her that final set. She looked completely disinterested in winning the match until the very end. If she continues to let her emotions affect her game, she will find it difficult in 2009.

It certainly wasn't rust and it wasn't like she was trying but still was trying to hit out. There were a few returns where she literally did not move for the ball and just swung at it. At one point she hit a ball and was already walking to the chair BEFORE Stosur hit a winner. This literally was a choke by Sam because Serena was giving her the match. The only positive thing about the match for Serena is that's she's such a good player that even when she's not trying she can still hit winners lol. But Serena won that match because of Sam's lack of nerves.

Pains me to say it, but that's a monster choke by Sam. 40-0 serving for the match, hits 2 double faults, then at ad misses an easy volley when Serena wasn't even in the court. Huge opportunity lost, she was playing the best tennis I've ever seen from her.

To answer the questions of Serena fans, Serena played excellent tennis until about 6-3 4-2, since as I mentioned prior, Sam was playing beautifully and yet was still losing at this point. She hit a couple of double faults in that game, I think maybe a consequence of limited match practice, and fell away further when she got a bad let cord call. And to be honest, for the first time ever, it looked to me like she was actually tanking in the third set. She was still striking the ball well, but not really moving, not structuring points, and showing no emotion whatsoever. But unfortunately Sam blew it, so Serena lives to fight another day and may get back into her groove mentally.

Wow, what a way to start 2009! At least she was able to get through it, and showed yet again that she's one of the game's best fighters. Mary Carillo actually said something accurate about Serena last year - even when she isn't playing well, she's always competing well. That will and determination to win will get her through so many matches. Good luck in the next round Serena! :yeah:

You know the thing that I've noticed about Serena the past few years is that her Australian season often mirrors how she played in the fall of the prior year. Serena got lazy after she won her 9th major at the US Open, she fell out of practice and fitness, which always leads to some sort of injury, real or feigned. Her sister Venus on the other hand, has been playing really inspired since the fall.

Well I for one am disappointed and disgusted at the disrespect you have for the English language and punctuation.

If I was Serena I would have been pissed off too. It's 5-5 30-30 and you want to close the match out, but a let cord that was so obvious it made a prominent noise and the trajectory of the ball change was ignored like that by the umpire, resulting in a lapse of concentration and the loss of the second set. I don't think Serena was happy with playing an extra 12 games, and she knew that second set would have been really different if it wasn't for that let cord that the whole crowd saw.

So you have lost all respect for Serena? What do you say to your idol Sam Stosur, who seems like a fair dinkum Aussie, totally ignore the umpire's blind mistake and let it go? To me it reminds me of the Henin incident with her hand.

I understand Sam is a competitor and not an umpire, but she should have noted something so damn obvious. It's unfair on Serena and I really think Sam should have stepped up to say something. I know Sam knows it was a let, she was on the receiving end and would have not only heard it, but also notice the trajectory changed.

Also, if I were Serena I would have just bloody called the match referee. :o

Wow looks like you have alos respect.. I guess you were well educated.......SARCASTIC!

Hey, I was never a fan of serena's but I admired the way she always fought and they way she always came back after people doubted her. But today she let all self respect go and practically tanked cause of one stupid call. If i was Sam i wouldnt have even shaken her hand. And she kept yelling at no mid point.

Even though Sam lost at least she still has class.

Any stats on this match? I was there, and I have to say that I am a huge huge huge serena fan (obviously), but this was just bleh! I mean c'mon!!! She was winning easily enough but at no point was she really focused or trying. Then the let cord happened and she just went off the boil. Didn't try for anything except to hit stupid errors...Still I loved seeing her in person and I was the lone guy you could probably hear in the crowd shouting "Cmon Serena!!! Fight!" haha..

Still...she's amazing. She'll get her act together next round I"m sure. Lucky escape, but then again, she knows what she's doing. :worship:

It's very interesting reading people's comments regarding choking etc..I wonder how many posters have been in a position where you are the nations number 1 player (men and women)with the weight of expectations on you - on the brink of the biggest win of your career with several thousand fans urging you on. Add to that a history of difficulty in closing out matches against top players, especially those who keep tanking when things don't go their way all the time(Pathetic from Vaidisova at Wimbledon 08 and a bad spoiled brat look from Serena today)

How can nerves not get in the way?? I agree it's a bad loss in the wash up, and Sam in no way should have lost today (OMG that volley!!)but she did, and it's something she has to overcome. All I'm saying I guess is that until you have experienced what a player does for real, you really should try to understand what a body turning into a sea of nerves feels like and make your comments accordingly.

Anyway, here's hoping for a better draw for Samantha at the AO and I think she'll do very well.

I was also at the match and the crowd was great, everyone was really into it and supporting Sam so much. I have never been so annoyed at the end of the match after Sam had so many chances to get the win, which would have been the best of her career. Sam still played really well and hopefully she won't choke in the future.

Serena was a bit childish the way she couldn't get over the let cord, some of the crowd booed when she had to even mention it again in the on court interview, however she still hit some amazing shots and congrats to her!

Oh my effing God, one of the weirdest wins I've ever seen Serena pull off.

When she get broken back at 2-2 so Stosur was serving at 3-2, it seemed like Serena was just like AHHH stuff it, she looked like she was defeated and that she didn't care. She had no grunt or anything and I was really disappointed at her. :( She also looked unfit and urgh...just a hot mess today but just shows how mentally tough this girl is! Amazing win with amazing drama.

more on the let cord incident:

Serena Williams saves four match points to deny Samantha Stosur

January 11, 2009
AMERICAN superstar Serena Williams cried foul after surviving a massive scare to reach the second round of the Sydney International with a tense three-set victory over local hope Samantha Stosur.

The world No.2 and three-times Australian Open champion saved four match points and needed almost two-and-a-half hours to prevail 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 and deny Stosur what would have been the biggest win of her career.

But Williams was left fuming when a let call was missed by the umpire as she was serving for the match with a 6-5 lead in the second set.

"I felt like I was going to win that second set,'' Williams said.

"At no point did I feel like I was going to lose and then I hit a massive let cord and the guy didn't call it.

"Even Sam knew it was a let cord. It was just frustrating at that point. These types of things seem to happen to me a lot and I'm just over it.''

Stosur made the most of her lucky break, winning the set in a tiebreak as Williams let her frustrations overshadow her game.

"It did and I probably shouldn't have allowed it to disrupt my game but it was a little frustrating,'' Williams said.

"I felt like I wouldn't have been out there that much longer and I was that close to the finish line. Maybe if I had finished sooner I wouldn't have had to deal with that let cord.''

The home crowd lifted with Stosur and soon an upset seemed on the cards when the Queenslander raced to a 40-0 lead serving for the match at 5-4 in the third.

But the top-ranked Australian blew all three match points and another in the same game to let Williams back into the match.

She then also dropped three break points in the following game as Williams showed plenty of heart in her first competitive match since suffering a hamstring injury at the year-ending WTA Championships in November to take the match.

The victory means Williams avoided the ignominy of becoming the first No.1 women's seed to bow out in the first round at Sydney since Jennifer Capriati in 2003.

Stosur conceded denied she had crumbled under the pressure with the match in her hands, despite also missing a sitter of a forehand volley on her fourth match point.

"Obviously I was nervous, and I'm going up there trying to serve and I felt I was shaking and all sorts of things are going through your mind,'' she said.

"But I guess at the end of the day that's when you've got to compose yourself.

"I actually thought I did that pretty well. I didn't feel like I rushed through those points or anything like that.''

Fifth-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova also survived a scare to secure her passage through to the second round with a 3-6 6-1 6-3 win over China's Peng Shuai.

In men's action, Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione remain the only Australians in the main draw of the men's singles after Peter Luczak was beaten in the final round of qualifying by Belgian Xavier Malisse.

Casey Dellacqua hits the court on Monday as one of two Australians in action with youngster Emelyn Starr also playing.

Women's seeds Nadia Petrova, Elena Dementieva, Vera Zvonareva and Dinara Safina all begin their Sydney campaigns on Monday while in the men's draw fifth seed Igor Andreev and seventh seed Tommy Robredo will also take to the court.

Before i go ahead and say what im about to, i would like everyone to know... yes, i am a stosur fan, yes, i would have loved for her to win, and yes, i am dissappointed that she didnt... but
i am really discusted at the way Serena went about the match are the CLEAR let call that was missed by noone but the unpire. she have lost most of my respect for her as a tennis player. even though she was still hitting some amasing shots and increadible winners, the fact that it was evnident that she didnt really care pissed me off more then you could imagine. She is a professional tennis player and for her to disrespect the tourny, her opponant and the fighting image many tannis fan (love her or hate her) have or her, is asoundingly poor behaviour for one of the most respect (liked or not)tennis player.

It wasn't 3 consecutive double faults. It was:
First MP: Fault outwide, let outwide(Serena thought it was an ace), fault.
Second MP: Fault, second serve...deep return, Sam hits BH into the net.
Third MP: Fault, Fault
Fourth MP: Fault, good second serve...good drop shot...Serena's digs a volley up and is off the court. Sam missed a volley into open court by meters.

Still bad :p but not 3 consecutive double faults.

It wasn't that serena was being challenged, she gave up play. There was no grunting, no comeons, wasn't even tryig for a rally for about six games, she was going for it whenter it landed in or out. SHE DID NOT CARE an iota and it showed. There was o attempt on her part to fight.
What will ahunt same is not the lost 4 mps but that she could have easily gone 4/0 up when serena was sulking, it is gona hurt her that even when serena was throing games away she did not take advantage.

Thanks for the youtube links. I liked the part at the very end where Serena snubbed the umpire and just walked over to her chair without a hand shake.

Say what you want about Serena tanking games, but the umpires are expected to bring their A game to a big match at a big tournament as well.
Anyway, what is it with the umpires? So many of them never seem to be interested in correcting or at least investigating a bit their own call when challenged by a player. They immediatedly freeze up and exclude any possibility that they made a bad call. It seems that they fear their authority or dignity would be lost for the rest of the match if they even turned to a line judge or someone else for confirmation. Of course the opposite happens if they were clearly wrong. They lose respect of players and the crowd, and sometimes lose their ranking- like Ms Alves or the umpire at Venus-Sprem match.
The umps need to loosen up a bit and think on their feet. I liked for example how the umpire asked for a replay during USO final when the line judge could not see the line and Serena protested. We need more of these common sense reactions from umpires, because those calls can influence outcomes of matches and there is a lot of money riding on them- both for the players as well as the tournaments.

How the fuck do you know that Serena was not practicing or got lazy during the off season...you people crack me up with your comments when you do not know what the hell is going on in those two women household. Give me a frigging break and stop speculating about things you do not know.

I just watched the match knewing the scoreline. i think i want a deathwish.

What I can say Sam, that was the biggest choke I have ever seen, i'm not sure how she is going to recover from this, that volley is going to give me nightmares.

What a win this would of been for Sam's career

Anyone else out there feeling sick after that match?

And she probably would have lost in the next round. That is why Serena had 9 majors and Sam has none, not even a Tier 1 or 2 for that matter.

it was a let that gave her opponent a free point and break point against her serve while she was serving for the match. It was a really bad mistake at a crucial moment in the match but you're right she shouldn't have let it bother her that much for that long. But don't brush it off like it was a nothing mistake. Stosur took a point she didn't earn. She's the one that should be ashamed. And even THEN she STILL couldn't close it out.

Yes, Serena let it bother her and she was a baby for a while, but she's NOT solely at fault.

And for you to think that Serena was not wronged and didn't deserve to be frustrated is both shortsighted and inconsiderate.

But you know what, Serena's in the R16 and Sam's probably in Melbourne right now.

Maybe if they play in the Aussie Open, they'll get an umpire that knows how to do their job and Serena can finish what she let slide yesterday.

Serena did keep playing but Serena also knows she has to bring the issue up and be adamant about it which she did. If Serena had kept playing like she did in the 2004 US Open QF against JCap, there would be no shot spot. ;) You keep playing but make sure that you bring it up to the umpire so they do their job correctly and fairly.

Stosur got exactly what she deserved. She earns a point on a let? What is wrong with these 'umpires'. And where exactly is the supposed 'class' in that?

And to the poster who argues that "it was just a let. It wasn't as if she [Serena] hit a winner."

Get a clue. The whole point is that Stosur supposedly 'hit a winner' in the umpire's glaucoma-ridden eyes.

Off a freakin' let. I can understand getting it wrong by centimeters but if the ball whacks into the net and somehow the umpire 'fails' to see it or hear it?

Then what the heck are they doing sleeping in an umpire's chair?

She gets to a 3rd set that she wouldn't have gotten to without sloppy umpiring. Serena sulks, doesn't care, and is clearly unhappy to be in a 3rd set that should never have happened. Stosur has everything going her way. A point on a let, to get to a third set, a rabidly partisan crowd and an indifferent opponent. She even gets to match point - 4 of them to be exact - the match is on a proverbial platter.

And still, she can't close it out...

Tell me why on earth I should be sympathising with this player? Like I said. Got her just reward for being greedy, desperate and dishonest and then lacking in any kind of courage when it came down to the wire. If you're going to take a free gift with open hands then at least make it count.

That said, I could care less about Stosur.

Serena really needs to get it together. Bad calls suck, and she's entitled to get upset and challenge a call ( - that's what human beings do). I don't care that she got upset, but I do care if she lets it get in the way of her winning the match. Next time, get angry - slam a racquet or argue with the umpire - and regroup. Because you're better than that Serena.

First and foremost this was an entertaining match reguardless of "choking" or "childish behavior".
I have not however seen a more pathetic attitude on a tennis court by Serena since Novotna waiting for Sanchez-Vicario to start to serve and deliberately turning her back on her (repeatedly) at the AO years ago. Having said that I can't bring myself to hate Serena because it's all part of the package and she IS a champion. Who's to say Stosur wouldn't have won the point had it even been called a let? The umpire however looked clueless, I do understand Serena's frustration, but as a rolemodel she was terribly immature.
Stosur is looking very good, I can understand the choke, she didn't expect to be in that position at the end of the match. I'm pretty sure Stosur had actually broken a string on that missed volley because she rushed the net on something she usually wouldn't have and changed her racket after the point. It's a learning experience and with David Taylor on board I'm sure she will get her head straight. Lets be honest, Sam's rusty as well, having not played much lately. Her win against Sugiyama was a training drill more or less in Brisbane. Peeps saying it's the worst choke ever? When you have someone like Serena swinging from the hip, you hardly know what to expect, ontop of almost tasting the biggest win of her career. I've seen worse chokes, her serves were not landing half way up the net, she wasn't rushing and stayed aggressive, perhaps too aggressive?
When Serena looked like she could be bothered in this match she actually looked very good (for all you frenetic fans of Serena on here), she'll be fine for the AO and I'm guessing she will take it out. Sam given a good draw should have a big AO. When they were both playing well in this match it was terrific quality. IMO as always ;)

Yes Serena was wronged, but in the 2004 USO QF, after the bad call situation, she KEPT PLAYING and didn't act like a spoiled baby. Yes, she played more conservatively, and eventually lost the match (and even had 4 more HORRIBLE calls in the last game), but what happened in Sydney was a 4 game temper tantrum. Now, I love Serena, but these tirades have GOT to stop. They're costing her....dearly. Now I'm SURE she'll come out more motivated in the next match, but if she wants to have a successful 2009 season, she needs to take a page from Diddy's book and put THIS in her notebook:

Got her just reward for being greedy, desperate and dishonest and then lacking in any kind of courage when it came down to the wire. If you're going to take a free gift with open hands then at least make it count.

That said, I could care less about Stosur.

Serena really needs to get it together. Bad calls suck, and she's entitled to get upset and challenge a call ( - that's what human beings do). I don't care that she got upset, but I do care if she lets it get in the way of her winning the match. Next time, get angry - slam a racquet or argue with the umpire - and regroup. Because you're better than that Serena.

PHENOMENAL POST!!! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Yes Serena was wronged, but in the 2004 USO QF, after the bad call situation, she KEPT PLAYING and didn't act like a spoiled baby. Yes, she played more conservatively, and eventually lost the match (and even had 4 more HORRIBLE calls in the last game), but what happened in Sydney was a 4 game temper tantrum. Now, I love Serena, but these tirades have GOT to stop. They're costing her....dearly. Now I'm SURE she'll come out more motivated in the next match, but if she wants to have a successful 2009 season, she needs to take a page from Diddy's book...

If you're mr. serena williams then u must know that your wife doesn't equate Sydney with US Open in no way, shape, form or fashion.

Serena and Ana sucking it up down under :inlove:

While following this match I was thinking about Ana who sucked badly before the AO last year and still got to the final. It gave me hope.

Maybe this will give you some comfort as well. Serena lost to Bammer in Hobart in '07.

Is it the other player's fault if even when they do tank, she still can't close out the match?

Maybe you should take your own advice.

Well I watched her practice this morning before the match and I think it just might be the match outfit that makes her look bigger. Seeing her in real life she is a lot slimmer than I had imagined.

I keep trying to tell people that.
