Vika! :worship: :worship: Amazing match from start to finish. She stayed well in control and stuck to her gameplan. If she plays with this intensity at the AO she will be threatening to everyone. Vika never let up from the baseline, hitting consistently hard on both wings and absorbing all of Marion’s pace. I also loved the way she put a bit more air on afew of her shots to give Marion even more ground to cover and to keep her pinned back.

Apart from a few flashes of brilliance (which were needed to keep the match even mildly competitive), Marion never really got into the match. Her court positioning was too far behind the baseline, and she’s never going to beat someone like Vika from that area of the court. She couldn’t handle the depth and angle of Vika and so was unable to hit through her like she does most of her opponents, and her serve was dreadful (her biggest letdown). But it was a convincing week for Marion, and it’s just the serve which I see holding her back at the AO.

I loved the ceremony, both were gracious to each other which was good for me as I am a fan of both.

Congrats to Wika on the first title, she deserved it the way she's been playing this week. :yeah: She should've won it already last year in Gold Coast.
Marion  Just not her day. Couldn't really take her chances and put more pressure on Wika.
Marion was so adorable in the ceremony, it's impossible to dislike her! Wika was cute too, totally didn't know what to say, plus she forgot to congratulate Marion. She was so embarrassed that I thought she would drop the trophy!

Azarenka will be a threat at AO. Tactically great and execution was great.

Marion had the right plan I think and I like how she changed her tactics very quickly in the match (and i think her tactics were effective) but she couldn't execute it. Her backhand crosscourt is surprisingly poor. Needs to work on that and her serve.

Pretty good match, even though I fell asleep. Vika seemed to be in control of most things, and looks to me like she will do some serious damage at the AO.
It was nice to see Viktoria smiling and looking very happy. That was not the case throughout the week

Yes it's pretty that. Marion was very nervous herself. I think she could have troubled more Vika had she taken a better start. She just let her grow on confidence.
But it wasn't a bad match, there were a couple of great rallies with some gorgeous winners from Marion. Vika was very solid too and absolutely deserved this title. I really hope that she enters top 10 where she belongs now! Congrats to her :).

i think i have a new favourite player. after mauresmo, of course. but this girl is exciting because i think her fierceness and consistency makes it good to get behind her, because you know she won't let you down easily.

From the start it seemed like it was only going one way, Vika played well, hit the ball cleanly and hard, honestly not much Marion could do. Vika has really seem to pick it up as the week has got on, played the perfect tactics and deserveds the title.

Marion  Did ok, serve let her down a bit but that didn't affect the result.

YES! Great tournament all-around for Azarenka. No sets dropped, got better towards the end of each match, and as the tournament progressed...this is very good news. Her serve seems rock-solid, too, and she spent much of last year falling apart in deuce games. Very optimistic about her, especially now that monkey #1 is off her back. Time for a BIG slam breakthrough.

For all the people who say this younger generation is unexceptional, I think you need look no further than Azarenka, Wozniacki, Radwanska, and even Cibulkova, Szavay, and Cornet and see that they really are a very talented and fairly different group of players. What strikes me the most is that most of these younger players who are emerging right now are very good movers. It'll be interesting to see if they manage to bring it and knock some good, solid top 10ers out or whether they have to wait for age and injury to knock them out instead.

Congratulation to Vika. She played really well and left Marion with no answers. Too bad the serve let down the Frenchwoman.

Anyhow, I don't really like Vika's attitude on court, maybe it's the Sharapova-like grunt? :tape: I saw play another match in Toronto and she gets way too negative and her game is too hit-and-miss but yesterday she played really. Good for her.

How so? Other than Szavay, they're all in the top 20 and all under 20. And Szavay was spitting distance from the top 10 last season and is BARELY 20. That's not a breakthrough like Serena or Sharapova, but it's certainly not useless. Additionally, they all are improving. Again, other than Szavay, they've all risen substantially in the past 12 months, and haven't shown many signs of slowing down.

Interesting that the four you consider useless aren't the big hitters. Another poster who doesn't see consistency as a weapon. Doesn't it get boring making the same tired old argument all the time? Doesn't get frustrating being wrong?

Being wrong? Name me the last 'consistent' player who won a major. That's right Hingis in 1999. If you try really hard, Myskina in 2004-fluke-. The game's changed. Consistency is not enough anymore. Can't you see? How many majors has Jankovic won? She is by the way much more than just a consistent player. So yes unless they learn how to hit big they won't win anything of significance. Even Radwanska who is very talented and smart on the court, what's her biggest title? She's been on the rise for a long time now. Azarenka's problem wasn't her game it was her head. If she can keep it together like she finally did this week she WILL win big titles. Consistent players can keep winning by letting their opponents self destruct but there will always be at least one big babe on a good day to stop them in latter stages of tournaments.

What a performance from Vika, she remind me a little bit of Maria at last year AO. This was not one those matches where the score looks impressed but the other player actually sucked. Since when do non-slam winners (Jankovic, Dementieva, Safina, etc.) qualify as useless? There's a difference between being a nothing player and having a highly respectable, top 20 career. Which, let's face it, Wozniacki and Radwanska are near-about guaranteed.

You may not like it, but greatness alone measured in slam titles. Having an exceptional career is different. 99% of professional tennis players will never hit the top 50. All these players are exceptional, consistent or no.

And I'd argue that Radwanska and Wozniacki each have bigger groundstroke's than Amelie Mauresmo.

This sounds like a press release.

Like that Romanian chick once said: "Not bad"? I don't want shit that's "not bad", I want shit that's good.

And that's the problem. We don't need consistent mediocrity. We don't need any more useless solid top 10ers (we already have plenty of those). We don't need winners by default. We need contenders for major titles, we need players who can beat the best when they play their best, and we need them now. The void at the very top we currently have is untenable, unless you feel it's good for the game to have Serena winning Slams until she needs a trailer to carry her own ass, or Venus still serving her way to Wimbledon titles while complaining of arthritis.

Right now, I think that the "ambush" players such as Kleybanova or Cirstea, which have the game to beat anyone but are evidently incapable of consistent success for all sorts of reasons (obesity and crazyness respectively for the players mentioned), are more interesting than any of the players you mentioned. Radwanska would have been a multiple Slam winner - had she reached her peak in 1972. La Borz is the bubbly version of Shahar Peer. Azarenka is a slower, less versatile Zvonareva. Cibulkova can become an upset artist, but has limited potential for obvious reasons. Szavay's shit hot streak of the summer of 07 was a fluke. Cornet sux. None of them strikes you as a future world beater. Some people mistakenly saw it in Vaidisova, which just about shows how desperate everyone is for someone new to shake things up.

If anyone wishes to reply to this post, I think it's better that you do it here, because the thread's subject is more appropriate:

You're wrong about Azarenka.

:worship: Oh this the best comment I've seen on this board. How many years do the Willies have left in them anyway? More than Maria probably but that isn't a good thing.

If there are no great players in the current 17-19 generation then we better hope that there are future great players in the 14-16 age group.
