View Full Version : Pony Up: How Many Slams for the Williams in 2009?

The Williams' outlook at the opening of this '09 tennis season is as bullish as it has been at any time in the past 5 years. Lay down your predictions people.

Well lets look historically

1999: 1
2000: 2
2001: 2
2002: 3
2003: 2
2004: 0
2005: 2
2006: 0
2007: 2
2008: 2

They've collectively won 2 or more majors 7/10 years. In 2006 neither played a full schedule and in 2004 they were coming off injury.

Provided they play ~13/14 tournaments which indicates relative health I'd be surprised if they bucked this trend.

At least one apiece. Venus will win Wimbledon again, and I've got a feeling Serena will win in either Australia or New York - or both maybe. I think this is the year that we see the Williams sisters regain the top two spots - and keep them this time.

almost half the board is calling for the Williams to equal or better their best ever combined year. Then again, with no Henin or Clijsters, Jankovic the fake #1, no new great players, and Sharapova looking like a non-factor, who would bet against it?

I say at least 2 Slams.

Can't go against the tradition of previous years.

With Venus winning the Australian Open, French Open & U.S. Open and Serena capturing Wimbledon.

I'll give them wimbeldon for sure, because let's face it there is noone in the game today even close to them on grass now besides sharapova but she hasn't fared well at wimbledon as of late. I don't see a french victory, then Australia and New York are both up for grabs, could potentially get 3 but I say 2.

Looking at the contenders for Melbourne, it is hard to believe BOTH will lose. At least one should survive.

It is a general consensus that the French is the odd slam out. Although, if Ivanovic keeps up this mess, that cannot be ruled entirely out. Especially if one of them wins Melbourne -- a calendar slam is possible. (Notice: calendar, AR, not er.)

They have zero to no competition at Wimbledon. Sharapova would be the only one and based on recent meetings, they have figured her out. Of course Maria could come up with something, but as of today, I'd bet on the Williamses winning Wimbledon.

If they have 2 going into the Open, they will win it. We'll see. :)

Jan 12th, 2009, 10:58 AM
Against conventional wisdom, I won't be surprised if they don't win any. They have no chance at the French (where Dinara, Ivanovic or Kuznetsova are best picks), and Dementieva is going to win Wimbledon this year. Sharapova or Jankovic could easily win USO. The Williams best chance for 2009 might be in Australia right now.

Wow..that's an impressive feat. Only 2 years without a major period. I think 2 is realistic. Serena should bag another hardcourt major and Venus is pretty much a lock for Wimbledon.

If they're both in the field in reasonable condition, look for them to win 3, save the French of course.

I'm chiming in after Oz-but I'll say two is the best bet, maybe 3. Wimbledon is almosy a shoo-in for a Williams, the French is the toughest for them, and who knows about the US Open. With any luck both sister's and the rest of the tour will healthy!

Only time will tell, Serena done great in 2007 at the Aussie Open and she let other things get in the way. But I have a feeling this is going to be a great year for both sisters; no one is going to take Wimbledon from Venus, not even Serena. I give them a little edge for the French if they have the right preperation and if Venus can get her head together and become more consistent, I look for them to meet in the US Open Final, only if they are not on the same side of the draw. This is going to be a great season, for the WTA because the sisters are back, and the only one who can beat Serena when she is playing this well, is Venus.

she could win like she did in 2005, 2007 & 2008....

your point is valid but all she was saying is that there's a good chance that Venus grabs the title.

can she still have these good chances to win there or do we have to rule her out of ALL the tournament just because you don't like her.

there's a difference between stating the truth, and using it to bait.

And IMO that was not what she was saying. To me the post sounded as if it's already a done deal that Venus will win Wimbledon this year, hence the mention of "already 2" (i.e. already two Slams won by the WS). And sorry, but to me that sounded "a tad" too arrogant. I would have had absolutely no problem had the poster worded it like you just did ("good chance that Venus grabs the title etc). My mention of Venus' losses in 2004 and 2006 was just to point out that there is no guerantee for Venus to win Slams given her inconsistancies. End.

I voted for 3 or 4. They are the two best grass court players of this generation, so the Wimbledon final should hopefully be between them for the fourth time. The French will be difficult. I'm tipping Safina or Jankovic to win their first major there this year. However, it is possible to see a surprise run by either sister. Hopefully Sharapova and Ivanovic will be in good form by the time the US Open rolls around, so things could be interesting by that point. Venus and Serena have five US Open titles between them, and experience counts for a lot in the later stages of Grand Slams (as we just witnessed this Australian Open). It would be nice if Venus or Serena could win the French, making a "Sister Slam" as all for slams would be held by one of them. I think it mainly depends on their form. At their best, they're better than all other players.

They COULD do 4. The only thing stopping Venus from doing something here last year was no preparation at all. Serena just went weird out there. She was favourite, I guess kinda lik what happened to Venus this year at the AO.
